These interactions can lead to an increase in wind energy cost through reduction in wind farm power efficiency as well as a reduction of functional turbine lifetime. The overall objective of this work is to extend and assess a moderatefidelity free vortex wake (FVW) model to capture turbine-wake interactions between multiple turbines. Specific focus areas include: (1) analyzing the effects of turbine-wake interaction; (2) benchmarking of the model against experimental wind farm measurements; and (3) comparing wake interaction effects between the FVW model and a dynamic wake meandering (DWM) model. Results show that FVW produces an increased dynamic response in wake-influenced turbines than FAST.Farm, which is an important factor in fatigue life of turbine blades. Parameter studies for various operating and layout conditions are performed. Analysis focuses on impact of wake interaction on wake structure, rotor power, and blade root bending moments. The parameter study shows expected power trends for all tested parameters. The effects of turbine-wake interactions are analyzed in terms of wake structure, rotor power, and structural response. The FVW model predicts increased unsteadiness in wake-influenced turbine rotor power and out-of-plane blade root bending moment. This could have implications for prediction of turbine life and suggests that the transient as well as average response of turbines should be considered to fully capture the effects of wake interaction. Comparisons between the FVW predictions and experimental measurements of relative rotor power are made over varying yaw angle and freestream velocity. Overall trends are predicted by the FVW approach, with less than 13% error on average when compared to wind farm measurements. These results indicate the FVW method is a useful tool for carrying out improved optimization of wind farms.

Book excerpt: Potential flow simulations are a great engineering type, middle-ground approach to modeling complex aerodynamic systems, but quickly become computationally unwieldy for large domains. An N-body problem with N-squared interactions to calculate, this free wake vortex model of a wind turbine is well suited to parallel computation. This thesis discusses general trends in wind turbine modeling, a potential flow model of the rotor of the NREL 5MW reference turbine, various forms of parallel computing, current GPU hardware, and the application of ground effects to the model. In the vicinity of 200,000 points, current GPU hardware was found to be nearly 17 times faster than an OpenMP 12 core CPU parallel code, and over 280 times faster than serial MATLAB code. Convergence of the solution is found to be dependent on the direction in which the grid is refined. The "no entry" condition at the ground plane is found to have a measurable but small impact on the model outputs with a periodicity driven by the blade proximity to the ground plane. The effect of the ground panel method was found to converge to that of the "method of images" for increasing ground extent and number of panels.

Book excerpt: Many physical systems observable in nature are governed by interaction forces between several bodies or particles. Examples of such systems (termed N-body problems) include gravitational, electrostatic, and vortex dynamics problems. For N-body problems, an exhaustive interaction force calculation is O(N2). Fast multipole methods, originally conceived by Greengard, provide a much more efficient O(N) algorithm to achieve the same result within a prescribed error margin. The basic themes of the algorithm rely on multipole expansion of the governing potentials and separation of the near- and far-field effects. A multilevel fast multipole methods (MLFMM) algorithm is developed for applications in free-vortex wake methods, which require computation of mutual interactions between a collection of vortex filaments. When coupled with atmospheric inflow and parallelized, this code can produce fast and accurate simulations of entire wind farms. Simulations of the Lillgrund wind farm have produced power results comparable to actuator line/disk LES simulations, while requiring a much smaller fraction of the computational resources. This MLFMM algorithm is also applied to 2-D dislocation dynamics simulations, which has applications in nanoscale simulation of materials. In this case, the N-body problem involves the computation of mutual interactions between a set of edge dislocations.

Within this context, parallel computing has played an increasingly important role. Moreover, the uptake of parallel computing has brought the CFD community into ever-closer contact with hardware vendors and computer scientists. The multidisciplinary subject of parallel CFD and its rapidly evolving nature, in terms of hardware and software, requires a regular international meeting of this nature to keep abreast of the most recent developments. Parallel CFD '97 is part of an annual conference series dedicated to the discussion of recent developments and applications of parallel computing in the field of CFD and related disciplines. This was the 9th in the series, and since the inaugural conference in 1989, many new developments and technologies have emerged. The intervening years have also proved to be extremely volatile for many hardware vendors and a number of companies appeared and then disappeared. However, the belief that parallel computing is the only way forward has remained undiminished. Moreover, the increasing reliability and acceptance of parallel computers has seen many commercial companies now offering parallel versions of their codes, many developed within the EC funded EUROPORT activity, but generally for more modest numbers of processors. It is clear that industry has not moved to large scale parallel systems but it has shown a keen interest in more modest parallel systems recognising that parallel computing will play an important role in the future. This book forms the proceedings of the CFD '97 conference, which was organised by the the Computational Engineering Group at Daresbury Laboratory and held in Manchester, England, on May 19-21 1997. The sessions involved papers on many diverse subjects including turbulence, reactive flows, adaptive schemes, unsteady flows, unstructured mesh applications, industrial applications, developments in software tools and environments, climate modelling, parallel algorithms, evaluation of computer architectures and a special session devoted to parallel CFD at the AEREA research centres. This year's conference, like its predecessors, saw a continued improvement in both the quantity and quality of contributed papers. Since the conference series began many significant milestones have been acheived. For example in 1994, Massively Parallel Processing (MPP) became a reality with the advent of Cray T3D. This, of course, has brought with it the new challenge of scalability for both algorithms and architectures. In the 12 months since the 1996 conference, two more major milestones were achieved: microprocessors with a peak performance of a Gflop/s became available and the world's first Tflop/s calculation was performed. In the 1991 proceedings, the editors indicated that a Tflop/s computer was likely to be available in the latter half of this decade. On December 4th 1996, Intel achieved this breakthrough on the Linpack benchmark using 7,264 (200MHz) Pentium Pro microprocessors as part of the ASCI Red project. With the developments in MPP, the rapid rise of SMP architectures and advances in PC technology, the future for parallel CFD looks both promising and challenging.

These approaches are widely used in works of Russian and other countries’ scientists. It should be emphasized that the experiments in wind tunnels and studies of natural vortex wakes behind heavy and light aircraft in flight experiments are equally important.

The remaining of the book focuses on the study of wind turbine aerodynamics using vortex-theory analyses or vortex-methods. Examples of vortex-theory applications are: optimal rotor design, tip-loss corrections, yaw-models and dynamic inflow models. Historical derivations and recent extensions of the models are presented. The cylindrical vortex model is another example of a simple analytical vortex model presented in this book. This model leads to the development of different BEM models and it is also used to provide the analytical velocity field upstream of a turbine or a wind farm under aligned or yawed conditions. Different applications of numerical vortex methods are presented. Numerical methods are used for instance to investigate the influence of a wind turbine on the incoming turbulence. Sheared inflows and aero-elastic simulations are investigated using vortex methods for the first time. Many analytical flows are derived in details: vortex rings, vortex cylinders, Hill's vortex, vortex blobs etc. They are used throughout the book to devise simple rotor models or to validate the implementation of numerical methods. Several Matlab programs are provided to ease some of the most complex implementations.
