Book excerpt: The spirits of an old house uncover dangerous family secrets Sixteen-year-old Lisa Burton can’t believe her parents dragged her to a summer house for the entire month of August. After five days of rain, she and her younger sister, Carrie, have never been more bored. So when their grandmother suggests a silly parlor game, the girls are excited—until an unseen power takes over Lisa’s hand and writes a puzzling message: “Welcome Home.” Who—or what—is trying to reach the Burtons, and how does it know that their grandmother’s family once lived at the estate? As she uncovers family secrets one by one, Lisa realizes that to make the past right, she’ll have to journey through the corridors of an unsettled mind powerful enough to trap them all inside. This ebook features an illustrated personal history of Bruce Coville including rare images from the author’s collection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Alexander Linn's 'The Main LDS Books' is an extensive compilation that serves as a thorough introduction and academic resource on the core texts and writings that underpin the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). This collection not only includes the cardinal works of scripture—The Bible (KJV), The Book of Mormon, The Doctrine and Covenants, and The Pearl of Great Price—but it also encompasses a wealth of doctrinal essays, discourses, and biographies by influential LDS leaders and scholars. With a keen editorial eye, the texts are arranged to present an overarching narrative of the LDS faith and its teachings, shedding light on its theology, history, and the lives of its founders. The scholarly exposition is complemented by an examination of the Church's theological evolution through seminal works, such as 'Jesus the Christ' by Talmage and 'A Rational Theology' by Widtsoe, contextualizing the LDS Church within the broader Christian tradition and American religious history. Linn himself, historically known for his critical views on Mormonism, notably in his book 'The Story of the Mormons,' has here taken on the role of editor to present an unvarnished and comprehensive outlook on Mormon writings. His extensive research into Mormon history and doctrines, as indicated in his past works, equips him with a unique perspective that brings forth the complexities and nuances of the LDS Church. Through 'The Main LDS Books,' Linn offers an inclusive treasury that gives readers the opportunity to explore and understand the LDS faith from its foundational texts, through prophetic teachings and expositions, to the vibrant histories of its leaders. This collection is recommended for scholars, theologians, historians, and anyone with a keen interest in the intricacies of the LDS Church and its canonical literature. It provides an unparalleled resource for comprehensive study, reflection, and discourse on the multifaceted aspects of Mormon thought and leadership. Whether one approaches this collection from an academic, faith-based, or historical standpoint, 'The Main LDS Books' is an indispensable anthology that delivers depth, variety, and scholarly insight into one of the most intriguing religious movements of the modern era.

Book excerpt: Using an innovative auto-ethnographic approach to investigate the otherness of the places that make up the childhood home and its neighbourhood in relation to memory-derived and memory-imbued cultural geographies, Remembering the Cultural Geographies of a Childhood Home is concerned with childhood spaces and children's perspectives of those spaces and, consequentially, with the personalised locations that make up the childhood family home and its immediate surroundings (such as the garden, the street, etc.). Whilst this book is primarily structured by the author's memories of living in his own Welsh childhood home during the 1970s - that is, the auto-ethnographic framework - it is as much about living anywhere amid the remembered cultural remnants of the past as it is immersing oneself in cultural geographies of the here-and-now. As a result, Remembering the Cultural Geographies of a Childhood Home is part of the ongoing pursuit by cultural geographers to provide a personal exploration of the pluralities of shared landscapes, whereby such an engagement with space and place aid our construction of cognitive maps of meaning that, in turn, manifest themselves as both individual and collective cultural experiences. Furthermore, touching upon our co-habiting of ghost topologies, Remembering the Cultural Geographies of a Childhood Home also encourages a critical exploration of children’s spirituality amid the haunted cultural and geographical spaces and places of a house and its neighbourhood: the cellar, hallway, parlour, stairs, bedroom, attic, shops, cemeteries, and so on.

Tired of the obtuseness of Church and State; indignant at the injustice of both towards woman; at the wrongs inflicted upon one-half of humanity by the other half in the name of religion; finding appeal and argument alike met by the assertion that God designed the subjection of woman, and yet that her position had been higher under Christianity than ever before: Continually hearing these statements, and knowing them to be false, I refuted them in a slight resume of the subject at the annual convention of the National Woman Suffrage Association, Washington, D.C., 1878. A wish to see that speech in print, having been expressed, it was allowed to appear in The National Citizen, a woman suffrage paper I then edited, and shortly afterwards in "The History of Woman Suffrage," of which I was also an editor. The kindly reception given both in the United States and Europe to that meager chapter of forty pages confirmed my purpose of a fuller presentation of the subject in book form, and it now appears, the result of twenty years investigation, in a volume of over five hundred and fifty pages. Matilda Electa Joslyn Gage (1826-1898) was a 19th-century women's suffragist, a Native American rights activist, an abolitionist, a freethinker, and a prolific author, who was "born with a hatred of oppression."
