Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When they did need to find us, our meeting place outside the school building was 'the Big Tree.' 'Wait at the Big Tree,' they told us. It's where they dropped us off and picked us up. After all these years that tree still stands at the corner of Cresent Street and Newtown Avenue in Astoria Queens. The school is gone, the nuns are gone, our parents and most of the family are now gone. There are no sounds of bells ringing, no kids lining up on the block, but that tree is still there. The only remaining vestige of my school days. It's funny and maybe a bit symbolic given the sanctity of this particular ground; that in a city a tree would out last a building and our very way of life.In the sometimes funny, sometimes heartbreaking saga of the Sirianni family of New York City, author Fran Sirianni captures the zeitgeist of a generation that was born in the 1950s, questioned things in the 1960s, and came of age in the 1970s. Fran's first person narrative tells the story of her family's arrival in the United States and how they embraced the opportunity of the America Dream to build a life of prosperity. When tragedy strikes, the family comes together to carry on, despite the uncertainty of the times in which they live.Wait at the Big Treeis a story of family, of loss, and of the inevitable change that occurs as we all come into our own.

Book excerpt: In the classic nature work, The Yosemite, the great American naturalist, John Muir, describes the Yosemite valley's geography and the myriad types of trees, flowers, birds, and other animals that can be found there. The Yosemite is among the finest examples of John Muir nature writings. The Yosemite is a classic nature/outdoor adventure text and a fine example of John Muir nature writings. In this volume, Muir describes the Yosemite valley's geography and the various types of trees, flowers and animals that can be found there. John Muir (April 21, 1838 - December 24, 1914) was a Scottish-American naturalist, author, environmental philosopher and early advocate of preservation of wilderness in the United States. His letters, essays, and books telling of his adventures in nature, especially in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California, have been read by millions. His activism helped to preserve the Yosemite Valley, Sequoia National Park and other wilderness areas. The Sierra Club, which he founded, is a prominent American conservation organization. The 211-mile (340 km) John Muir Trail, a hiking trail in the Sierra Nevada, was named in his honor.[2] Other such places include Muir Woods National Monument, Muir Beach, John Muir College, Mount Muir, Camp Muir and Muir Glacier. In Scotland, the John Muir Way, a 130 mile long distance route, was named in honor of him. In his later life, Muir devoted most of his time to the preservation of the Western forests. He petitioned the U.S. Congress for the National Park bill that was passed in 1890, establishing Yosemite National Park. The spiritual quality and enthusiasm toward nature expressed in his writings inspired readers, including presidents and congressmen, to take action to help preserve large nature areas. He is today referred to as the "Father of the National Parks" and the National Park Service has produced a short documentary about his life. Muir has been considered 'an inspiration to both Scots and Americans'. Muir's biographer, Steven J. Holmes, believes that Muir has become "one of the patron saints of twentieth-century American environmental activity," both political and recreational. As a result, his writings are commonly discussed in books and journals, and he is often quoted by nature photographers such as Ansel Adams. "Muir has profoundly shaped the very categories through which Americans understand and envision their relationships with the natural world," writes Holmes. Muir was noted for being an ecological thinker, political spokesman, and religious prophet, whose writings became a personal guide into nature for countless individuals, making his name "almost ubiquitous" in the modern environmental consciousness. According to author William Anderson, Muir exemplified "the archetype of our oneness with the earth", [ while biographer Donald Worster says he believed his mission was "...saving the American soul from total surrender to materialism." 403 On April 21, 2013, the first ever John Muir Day was celebrated in Scotland, which marked the 175th anniversary of his birth, paying homage to the conservationist. Muir was born in the small house at left. His father bought the adjacent building in 1842, and made it the family home.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once there was an endless redwood wilderness, populated by only the hardiest of people. Then, the sudden blast of a steam whistle echoed across the canyons and the valleys-the iron horse had arrived in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Driven by the need to transport materials like lumber and lime to the rest of the world, the railroad brought people seeking out new ways of living, from the remote outposts along Bean and Zayante Creeks to the bustling towns of Los Gatos and Santa Cruz. Bridges and tunnels marked the landscape, and each new station, siding and spur signaled activity: businesses, settlements, and vacation spots. Summer resorts in the mountains evolved into sprawling residential communities which formed the backbone of the towns of the San Lorenzo Valley today. Much of the history of the locations along the route has since been forgotten. This is their story. Book excerpt: Reformulation and Acquisition of Linguistic Complexity proposes a new answer to the question of the appropriation or acquisition of a mother tongue – a complex object, one that is both stable and perpetually evolving. This answer is based on the reformulating principle that children spontaneously apply; a principle that is illustrated here with children retelling the same story. These children are all 6, 8 or 10 years old and speak French, Italian, Croatian or Polish as a first language. This book demonstrates that the acquisition of any mother tongue is explained by the application of various reformulation procedures between source predications and reformulated predications. These procedures are comparable from one language to another, and different from one age group to another. This book also studies certain complex phenomena at the lexical and syntactical levels, and analyzes how children, depending on their age, treat these phenomena. Finally, we show that the acquisition of a mother tongue is a fundamentally linguistic activity.

Book excerpt: 'Colombo is in the throes of an explosion. Its face changes continuously, its vices are legion, its future as yet obscure and its paths speak of sunlight as well as of shadow...' Carl Muller begins his quasi-fictional portrait of this beautiful, war-torn city by describing the great battles fought over it by European colonizers...In AD 1505, a Portuguese fleet blown off-course took shelter in Galle, overthrew the local kings, fortified Colombo and decided to stay. The Dutch came along, ousted the Portuguese, made Colombo their capital and ruled till the British arrived and sent them packing. Muller intersperses the tales of the past into descriptions of the battles that are being fought in Colombo today--political battles in which vested interests play a major role as well as battles fought on the individual level in the struggle to survive: young women and children turning to prostitution to earn an extra buck, people begging in the streets to make ends meet, unemployed young men turning to crime in frustration, students demonstrating against atrocities, lovers pining for nightfall in order to push away loneliness if only for a few moments...Written in Muller's lucid style, Colomb

Mrs. Nimbly Knock and her three little squirrels, Quickskip, Chuckles, and Hopscotch, have a happy lifeuntil Mr. Nimbly Knock goes hunting for nuts in the forest one day and never returns. Waiting for the Rain asks how a nation can look to the future and preserve its traditions while being tied down to the present tyranny of its oppressors. Told through multiple perspectives of the Mandengu family, Waiting for the Rain eloquently captures the generational effects of colonialism and the slow breaking of family bonds. Writing during the fiercest years of the Zimbabwe War of Independence, Mungoshi treads a fine line between criticising colonial rule and attempting to avoid British censorship. The result is an astute commentary on the challenges faced in 1960s Zimbabwe. 'Zimbabwe's finest and most versatile writer.' Petina Gappah 'The influence of Mungoshi's work cuts across generations, continents and cultures.' Professor Arthur Mutambara, former Zimbabwean Deputy Prime Minister

Book excerpt: For all of his life Kyasuta and his tribe held the strategic portages and trails through the wilderness of the Ohio country. But Kyasuta knew the days had come when he and his people would face a difficult struggle to maintain control over their long-held territories. As the leader of the Seneca Wolf Clan Kyasuta had stood watch over the Ohio River. He was a warrior, a war chief, and a diplomat during very critical times in our early history. Whether it was peace or war, Kyasuta's presence would be felt by the new white settlers in the old Northwest Territory. The Mingwe Kyasuta tells the story of the European settlers encroachment upon the land west of the Appalachian Mountains from Kyasuta's perspective. It gives insight into the Native American tribes who lived east of the Mississippi River during a time when the Ohio country was the west and when the Ohio River was the western jump off point into the New World.
