""I read your book today and it is excellent. I have been a guide on the Shenandoah and Potomac for more than 30 years and your descriptions from Brunswick to Harpers Ferry are excellent."" In this book, Steve shares his years of experience fishing one of the East Coast's best, yet most underrated, smallmouth rivers - the Upper Potomac. This book literally walks the reader 57 miles upstream starting at the Chain Bridge in the District of Columbia to end at Dam 3 above Harpers Ferry. Given that a picture is worth 1,000 words, the book includes over 200 augmented with 42 maps and 45 tables of critical information that allow you to determine the right place to go and the right time to be there. Other Potomac books assume you have a boat; this one assumes you fish on your feet. Steve dedicates the entire book to guiding you to locations where you can wade or fish from the shore. It includes 33 named chapters that discuss the major access points in Virginia, Maryland and West Virginia. Many contain additional information on minor access points within the same area; expanding the total geographic coverage dramatically. This book is "internet aware" and includes 208 GPS coordinates usable in Google Maps for precise directions as well as the satellite view to obtain a birds-eye perspective. Kayak and canoe fishing enthusiasts will find this book to be equally useful.

Book excerpt: To catch fish, you need to know where to fish. 196 pages, 140+ pictures, 34 maps, and 61 tables document the fishing on 30 miles of the North Branch from Westernport, MD through Wilson, WV. In addition to this traditional hardcopy version, it is offered as an eBook (www.catchguide.com) with the same content - the only difference is that the eBook is in color and has active links to additional information such as Google Maps. As a guide book, it is rock solid. According to the official review done by the North American Fly Fishing Forum, "I am a big fan of Guide Books and I find The CatchGuide eBook to be one of the best I have seen. It is a great tool and I can't even imagine the work that the Author put into publishing this eBook. I highly recommend it." Steve Moore provides a detailed, focused guide to this single body of water. Prior books all cover a broad geography - "Maryland" or "Mid-Atlantic" and, necessarily, cannot be exhaustive on any single place. Beyond setting the stage, he does not talk about the North Branch in general terms because every mile offers a different fishing experience. As Steve literally walks you up the river, he shows the specific areas to fish and discusses what you will encounter. Steve tells you how to get there, where to park, how to get to the stream, and what to use in the spots he found most productive.

The Map Book shows how to get to the public access points on the North Branch of the Potomac between Westernport, MD and Wilson, WV; covering 30 miles of river. Where needed, the book includes pictures to show key turns to keep you from getting lost en-route to the stream. The author recommends that you purchase the full 196 page version - "Trout and Smallmouth Fishing on the North Branch of the Potomac" that goes far beyond just giving you the directions to the access points for a few dollars more. It is only $14.95 and includes detailed guidance on how and where to fish the river once you reach the side of the stream. The only advantage to the bare bones Map Book is that it is smaller.

Book excerpt: To catch fish, you need to know where to fish. Steve visited every location discussed and discovered Maryland provides a startling array of trout fishing opportunities, ranging from some surprising locations on the Eastern Shore all the way to the wild and roiling rivers of Garrett County in the western mountains. This book covers 100% of the stocked trout water in Maryland along with the better known wild trout streams. For each, Steve provides a description, directions and an itemized list of access points. However, knowing anglers judge water by "how it looks," he includes at least one picture (551 total) for each location, allowing you to make an informed judgment before burning the gas to visit any particular spot. Given the availability of GPS technology on devices ranging from cell phones to car navigation systems, Steve includes 902 GPS coordinates to describe the stream boundaries as well as every known access point. Plug these into your navigation system for custom directions or into the Google(TM) satellite view for a bird's-eye perspective of the water and the surrounding terrain. Add your own favorite wild streams using the methodological approach described in the chapter on "Blue Lining." Finally, Steve's chapter on "Stocked Trout Behavior" contains lessons learned from a number scientific studies. Understanding the movement dynamics of freshly stocked fish allows you to position yourself to maximize your catch Reviewed and checked by members of the Potomac-Patuxent and Northern Virginia Chapters of Trout Unlimited, Potomac Valley Fly Fishers, and the Annapolis Chapter of the Free State Fly Fishers. Feedback included: "Likely to be regarded as the 'Bible' for trout fishing" "Your work is well prepared, it is impressive"

Book excerpt: Trout Bum is a fresh, contemporary look at fly fishing, and the way of life that grows out ofa passion for it. The people, the places, and the accoutrements that surround the sport make a fishing trip more than a set of tactics and techniques. John Gierach, a serious fisherman with a wry sense of humor, show us just how much more with his fishing stories and a unique look at the fly-fishing lifestyle. Trout Bum is really about why people fish as much as it is about how they fish, and it is ultimately about enduring values and about living in a harmony with our environment. Few books have had the impact on an entire generation that Trout Bum has had on the fly-fishing world. The wit, warmth, and the easy familiarity that John Gierach brings to us in Trout Bum is as fresh and engaging now was when it was first published twenty-five years ago. There's no telling how many anglers have quit their jobs and headed west after reading the first edition of this classic collection of fly-fishing essays.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cicadas are large, loud insects that spend their nymphal stages underground until they crawl out, climb a tree trunk, and emerge as winged insects. The adult insects emerge on a 1-year (annual) and 13- or 17-year (periodical) cadence. Yearly emergences are consistent and plentiful in certain places East to West and become a dependable “hatch.” Species from carp and smallmouth bass on eastern rivers to trout on fabled waters such as Utah’s Green River or Pennsylvania’s Spring Creek grow fat on this annual feast. But the feeding frenzy kicks into high in most years when a brood of periodical cicadas emerge in their predictable range. These insects have been underground for 13 or 17 years (identified by different brood names) and emerge en masse in mind-boggling numbers. Many of them take to trees along highways or deep in the woods where their call is deafening, and animals from birds to snakes to turkeys feed voraciously on them. Millions of cicadas also emerge at the bases of the trees and bushes that line streams and lakes, and they fall into the water so regularly that fish become attuned to them. Even fish that are not designed to feed on the surface, such as carp, catfish and freshwater drum, contort their bodies to take part in this daily buffet, which lasts for about a month. Anglers can follow this hatch and fish cicadas for almost two months and, if they understand which broods are hatching where, can fish cicadas almost every year. This is the first book dedicated to the patterns, techniques, and, most important, the science of locating the best hatches of these insects.

Book excerpt: The Eastern United States is wrought with tailwater fisheries that can produce monster trout, but anglers need the wheres, whens and hows in order to capitalize. In the newest Flyfisher's Guide, Tom Gilmore gives you everything you need to know to hook into the East's trophy tailwater trout. Other guidebooks have inconsistent writing and photography, with vague maps. Gilmore gives you everything you need to know, along with spectacular full-color photography. Regulations, seasons, fish, river characteristics, expert insights, recommended gear, hub-city information, history, and complete directions are listed for every river. Gilmore also details what makes a tailwater a tailwater, and offers specific advice on how to approach them. Fish, flies and hatches are broken down, along with tips on how to read the water, flow and release schedules, seasonal variations, appropriate gear and more. This book keeps up Wilderness Adventures Press' tradition of producing superior maps with GPS coordinates for all access points, boat ramps, campgrounds and more. The Upper Connecticut, Deerfield, Housatonic, Delaware, Gunpowder, Jackson, South Holston, Watauga, Tuckasegee, Chattahoochee and many more rivers are covered in full detail. Authors Ed Jaworowski's and Beau Beasley's endorsements validate this offering as the authoritative guide on fishing eastern tailwaters. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To catch fish, you need to know where to fish. The Rapidan River is an angler's dream that can be fished year round since the watershed includes tough, cranky smallmouth bass as well as aggressive mountain brook trout. Following the precedent set in his other CatchGuide books, Steve starts the coverage at the mouth of the Rapidan where it slams into the Rappahannock at the smallmouth bass fishing heaven known simply as "the Confluence" and ends above the old presidential retreat at Camp Hoover high in the Blue Ridge Mountains. There are 18 different access points between those two locations that open up over 34 miles of water. Even though the book runs over 50,500 words, that is not enough to describe the fabulous fishing on this premier river. 248 pictures, coupled with 21 maps, tell the rest of the story. Use them to put your experienced angler's eye on the water and make your own judgment before you drive to any particular location. In the Internet age, pictures and words are not enough. The book includes 162 GPS coordinates to obtain customized directions via the Internet or put the coordinates directly into a GPS receiver to guide your day on the water. Beyond wade fishing, Steve discusses each access point in terms of its compatibility to launch a canoe or a kayak. Once in the water, floating anglers will be well served to use this guide to move quickly to the good spots and not waste time floating over unproductive water. The detailed coverage from Elys Ford to the Confluence is exceptionally focused and useful.
