Book Synopsis Voter Registration in Focus by : Janet B. Lane

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the hallmarks of American democracy is the right to vote. In fact, the freedom to vote is so ingrained in American culture that it is taken for granted. Each election shows increasingly decreasing voter turnout and a decline in eligible voters registering. This can be partially attributed to a general antipathy toward the political process and partisan debates. However, there is no legitimate excuse for not availing oneself of the precious freedom to cast a ballot and have a say in the direction of the nation. With the increasing attention given to autocratic regimes across the globe and the restrictions placed on individual freedoms, it is amazing that the right to vote is not more appreciated. This is not to say that the American system is perfect. The 2000 presidential election drew unwanted attention on the inefficiencies and problems inherent in the system, leading to nation-wide cries to rectify the election process. The book analyses the issues around voter registration by looking at voter turnout over the elections of the second half of the 20th century. The articles presented here provide a needed historical background and study of the voting system and specific elections and make for an important collection in understanding the problems and importance of the vote in American democracy.

Download or read book Who Votes Now? written by Jan E. Leighley and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2013-11-24 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who Votes Now? compares the demographic characteristics and political views of voters and nonvoters in American presidential elections since 1972 and examines how electoral reforms and the choices offered by candidates influence voter turnout. Drawing on a wealth of data from the U.S. Census Bureau's Current Population Survey and the American National Election Studies, Jan Leighley and Jonathan Nagler demonstrate that the rich have consistently voted more than the poor for the past four decades, and that voters are substantially more conservative in their economic views than nonvoters. They find that women are now more likely to vote than men, that the gap in voting rates between blacks and whites has largely disappeared, and that older Americans continue to vote more than younger Americans. Leighley and Nagler also show how electoral reforms such as Election Day voter registration and absentee voting have boosted voter turnout, and how turnout would also rise if parties offered more distinct choices. Providing the most systematic analysis available of modern voter turnout, Who Votes Now? reveals that persistent class bias in turnout has enduring political consequences, and that it really does matter who votes and who doesn't.

Download or read book Southern Politics in State and Nation written by Valdimer Orlando Key and published by Univ Tennessee Press. This book was released on 1984 with total page 675 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than thirty years after its original publication, V. O. Key's classic remains the most influential book on its subject. Its author, one of the nation's most astute observers, drew on more than five hundred interviews with Southerners to illuminate the political process in the South and in the nation. Key's book explains party alignments within states, internal factional competition, and the influence of the South upon Washington. It also probes the nature of the electorate, voting restrictions, and political operating procedures. This reprint of the original edition includes a new introduction by Alexander Heard and a profile of the author by William C. Havard. "A monumental accomplishment in the field of political investigation." --Hodding Carter, New York Times "The raw truth of southern political behavior." --C. Vann Woodward, Yale Review "[This book] should be on the 'must' list of any student of American politics." --Ralph J. Bunche V.O. Key (1908-1963) taught political science at the University of California, Los Angeles, and at Johns Hopkins, Yale, and Harvard universities. He was president of the American Political Science Association and author of numerous books, including American State Politics: An Introduction (1956); Public Opinion and American Democracy (1961); and The Responsible Electorate (1966).

Download or read book State Voter Registration Databases written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-04-17 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Help America Vote Act of 2002 requires the states to develop a single, computerized voter registration data base (VRD) that is defined, maintained, and administered at the state level. To help the states with this task, the U.S. Election Assistance Commission asked the NRC to organize a series of workshops and prepare an interim report addressing the challenges in implementing and maintaining state VRDs. The EAC also asked the NRC to advise the states on how to evolve and maintain the databases so that they can share information with each other. This report provides an examination of various challenges to the deployment of state VRDs and describes potential solutions to these challenges. This interim report's primary focus is on shorter-term recommendations although a number of long-range recommendations are presented. The final report will elaborate on the long-range questions and address considerations about interstate interoperability of the VRDs.

Book Synopsis The Administration of Voter Registration by : Thessalia Merivaki
Download or read book The Administration of Voter Registration written by Thessalia Merivaki and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-17 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the dynamics behind shifts in voter registration rates across the states and adopts a framework of collaborative governance with election administration at its center. The book starts by introducing readers to the “voter registration gap,” an aggregate measure of variance in voter registration, and demonstrates how it fluctuates between federal elections. To explain why this variance exists, the author examines the relationship between federal reforms, such as the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) and the Help America Vote Act; and state-level reforms, such as Online Voter Registration. Thessalia Merivaki argues that the weak relationship between the two is not surprising, since it hides dramatic variations in administrative practices at the local level, which take place in shorter intervals than the most frequently used two-year estimates. In closing, she shows that challenges to successfully registering to vote persist, largely because of how, when, and where eligible citizens have to register.
