Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The massive size of the original six-volume History of Woman Suffrage has likely limited its impact on the lives of the women who benefitted from the efforts of the pioneering suffragists. By collecting miscellanies like state suffrage reports and speeches of every sort without interpretation or restraint, the set was often neglected as impenetrable. In their Concise History of Woman Suffrage, Mari Jo Buhle and Paul Buhle have revitalized this classic text by carefully selecting from among its best material. The eighty-two chosen documents, now including interpretative introductory material by the editors, give researchers easy access to material that the original work's arrangement often caused readers to ignore or to overlook. The volume contains the work of many reform agitators, among them Angelina Grimké, Lucy Stone, Carrie Chapman Catt, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Anna Howard Shaw, Jane Addams, Sojourner Truth, and Victoria Woodhull, as well as Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, Matilda Joslyn Gage, and Ida Husted Harper.

The "may be" of to-day becomes the "was" or the "might have been" of to-morrow. Even while the ink is still wet in the printing press events are happening which are deciding whether a new chapter of militancy is to be written or whether the book should have the orthodox ending - "and they all lived happily ever after." Those who read this book a year, a month, or even a day, after it is published are asked to bear this salient fact in mind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters to a Friend on Votes for Women My dear C., You ask how it has happened that, though I was for many years an advocate, I have now become a convinced opponent of the introduction of woman suffrage into England? The question is a natural one. It is the better worth an answer because my own change of opinion has been shared by many of my contemporaries who began to take an interest in politics some fifty or sixty years ago. We all of us were Liberals; we most of us came under the influence of J. S. Mill, and we could not then have found a wiser, a nobler, and, above all, a more public-spirited teacher of the rights and duties of citizens. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Women's Suffrage: The Reform Against Nature In this manner it results that the lot of woman comes to be a lot of abridgment and suppression, much more commonly than we have been oh serving ourselves. As our attention is called to the matter, and we become more completely awake to it, we are surprised to find how many disadvantages are laid upon the condition of woman that no principle of equity permits, and no pretense of reason or necessity justifies. It does not surprise us that, in the savage and bar barons forms of society, she is reduced to the lot of a menial or drudge and well nigh to a beast of burden; or that she is bought and sold for mar riage, apart from any right of consent, and con signed in this manner to a husband whose power is a power of life and death. All such monstrous kinds of wrong we expect to encounter in the bar baric conditions of society. But the real wonder now forcing itself upon' our discovery, is that our own deliberately adjusted laws and institutions are so often unequal, as regards the property rights of men and women and the redress of their per sonal wrongs that women are so often excluded. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Woman and the Republic: A Survey of the Woman-Suffrage Movement in the United States and a Discussion of the Claims and Arguments of Its Foremost Advocates I am sure I need not emphasize the fact that, in studying some of the principles that underlie the Suffrage movement, I am not impugning the motives of the leaders. Nor need I dwell upon the fact that it is from the good comradeship of men and women that has come to prevail under our free conditions, that some women have hastily espoused a cause with which they never have affiliated, because they supposed it to be fighting against odds for the freedom of their sex. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Woman Suffrage, Vol. 3 of 3: 1876-1885 For the completion of this work we are indebted to Eliza Jackson Eddy, the worthy daughter of that noblephilanthropist, Francis Jackson. He and Charles F. Hovey are the only men who have ever left a generous bequest to the woman suffrage movement. To Mrs. Eddy, who bequeathed to our cause two-thirds of her large fortune, belong all honor and praise as the first woman who has given alike her sympathy and her wealth to this momentous and far-reaching reform. This heralds a turn in the tide of benevolence, when, instead of building churches and monu ments to great men, and endowing colleges for boys, women will make the education and enfranchisement of their own sex the chief object of their lives. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Woman Suffrage: A Reply Smith demurs, and contends that the lot of the woman has not been determined by the will of the man, at least in any considerable degree. According to him it had its origin in those circumstances which made it expedient, on public grounds, that in the early stages of civilization the family should be socially, legally, and politically a unit. Into this portion of the controversy, however, I cannot see that there would be any advantage in entering. Whether Mr. Mill was right or wrong in his view of the historical question, he was at all events eminently successful in the purpose for which he introduced the discussion. He has secured a hearing for the cause of woman, so effectually, that we may now at least feel confident that it will not be ultimately decided on other grounds than those of reason and justice. Nor does it in truth matter whether in approaching the question of Woman Suffrage we adopt Mr. Mill's or Mr. Smith's theory. Both alike regard the existing disabilities of women as survivals - Mr. Mill, as survivals from a very early period in which physical force was supreme; Mr. Smith as survivals from the state of things which produced the peculiar constitution of the patriarchal family but both as survivals, and therefore as belonging to a condition of life which has passed away. The point is thus of purely archaeological interest, while the real question now before the public is, not as to the origin of woman's disabilities, but as to their present expediency; the interest of the whole community, to borrow once more Mr. Smith's language, being the test.
