Book Synopsis Atmospheric Energetics in Regions of Intense Convective Activity by : Henry E. Fuelberg
Download or read book Atmospheric Energetics in Regions of Intense Convective Activity written by Henry E. Fuelberg and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synoptic-scale budgets of kinetic and total potential energy are computed using 3- and 6-h data at nine times from NASA's fourth Atmospheric Variability Experiment conducted on 24-25 April 1975. Two intense squall lines occurred during the period. Energy budgets for areas as small as 8.0 x 1011 m2 that enclose regions of intense convection are shown to have systematic changes that relate to the life cycles of the convection. Some of the synoptic-scale energy processes associated with the convection are found to be larger than those observed in the vicinity of mature cyclones. Volumes enclosing intense convection are found to have large values of cross-contour conversion of potential to kinetic energy and large horizontal export of kinetic energy. Although small net vertical transport of kinetic energy is observed, values at individual layers indicate large upward transport. Transfer of kinetic energy from grid to subgrid scales of motion occurs in the volumes. Latent heat release is large in the middle and upper troposphere and is thought to be the cause of the observed cyclic changes in the budget terms. Total potential energy is found to be imported horizontally in the lower half of the atmosphere, transported aloft, and then exported horizontally. Although local changes of kinetic energy and total potential energy are small, interaction between volumes enclosing convection with surrounding larger volumes is quite large. Spatial fields of terms in the energy budget equations are shown at three times. These have good continuity and are closely related to the locations and intensities of the two squall lines.
Book Synopsis The Representation of Cumulus Convection in Numerical Models by : Kerry Emanuel
Download or read book The Representation of Cumulus Convection in Numerical Models written by Kerry Emanuel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-03-30 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents descriptions of numerical models for testing cumulus in cloud fields. It is divided into six parts. Part I provides an overview of the problem, including descriptions of cumulus clouds and the effects of ensembles of cumulus clouds on mass, momentum, and vorticity distributions. A review of closure assumptions is also provided. A review of "classical" convection schemes in widespread use is provided in Part II. The special problems associated with the representation of convection in mesoscale models are discussed in Part III, along with descriptions of some of the commonly used mesoscale schemes. Part IV covers some of the problems associated with the representation of convection in climate models, while the parameterization of slantwise convection is the subject of Part V.

Book Synopsis Vortex Dynamics and Optical Vortices by : Hector Perez-De-Tejada
Download or read book Vortex Dynamics and Optical Vortices written by Hector Perez-De-Tejada and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2017-03-01 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contents of the book cover a wide variety of topics related to the analysis of the dynamics of vortices and describe the results of experiments, computational modeling and their interpretation. The book contains 13 chapters reaching areas of physics in vortex dynamics and optical vortices including vortices in superfluid atomic gases, vortex laser beams, vortex-antivortex in ferromagnetic hybrids, and optical vortices illumination in chiral nanostructures. Also, discussions are presented on particle motion in vortex flows, on the simulation of vortex-dominated flows, on vortices in saturable media, on achromatic vortices, and on ultraviolet vortices. Fractal light vortices, coherent vortex beams, together with vortices in electric dipole radiation, and spin wave dynamics in magnetic vortices are examined as well.

Book Synopsis Hydrodynamic Stability by : P. G. Drazin
Download or read book Hydrodynamic Stability written by P. G. Drazin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-08-05 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydrodynamic stability is of fundamental importance in fluid mechanics and is concerned with the problem of transition from laminar to turbulent flow. Drazin and Reid emphasise throughout the ideas involved, the physical mechanisms, the methods used, and the results obtained, and, wherever possible, relate the theory to both experimental and numerical results. A distinctive feature of the book is the large number of problems it contains. These problems not only provide exercises for students but also provide many additional results in a concise form. This new edition of this celebrated introduction differs principally by the inclusion of detailed solutions for those exercises, and by the addition of a Foreword by Professor J. W. Miles.
