Book excerpt: The squirrel-cage induction machine is very attractive for small and medium power generation schemes because of its low cost, robustness and high power density (W/kg). However, the magnitude and the frequency of the generated voltage depend upon the rotor speed, the amount of capacitive excitation, and the load in stand-alone systems with unregulated prime movers. A common approach for providing regulated voltage and frequency to the load is the use of an asynchronous link (ac-dc-ac) power electronic converter. The main disadvantage of this scheme is that the two series connected ac-dc converters have to be rated at least to the rated generator output power. This work investigates the use of a VSI with induction generator operating with an unregulated prime mover supplying power to a load with regulated voltage and frequency in stand alone mode.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis, control schemes for the self-excited induction generator are developed with Matlab/Simulink. Self-excited induction generator is considered as a constant voltage-constant frequency supply for an isolated load. A wind turbine is assumed to be the variable-speed drive of the induction generator. Control schemes aim to ensure a constant voltage-constant frequency operation of the induction generator in case of the variations in the wind speed and/or the load. From the general model of the self-excited induction generator, the characteristics of the system and the dynamic responses of the system in case of any disturbance are examined. Next, the control strategies are developed both for the squirrel-cage rotor induction generator and for the wound-rotor induction generator. Two control loops are necessary for constant voltage-constant frequency operation of a variable speed induction generator, one for the voltage regulation and the other for the frequency regulation. After developing the control loops, constant voltage-constant frequency operation of the self-excited induction generator is simulated with a cage type saturation adaptive induction generator, a fixed capacitor with thyristor controlled reactor (TCR) used for frequency regulation and switched external resistors connected to the stator terminals used for voltage regulation.

This book was released on 2011-05 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the harnessing of such non-conventional energy sources could be achieved in a big way by the development of the suitable low cost generating systems. The self excited induction generator (SEIG) is a suitable power generation source utilizing renewable energy sources due to its advantages as compared to conventional synchronous generator. SEIG can generate single phase and three phase power using three phase induction motor. The SEIG has a major drawback of poor voltage regulation. For this purpose, a suitable control scheme is to be developed such that the load on the SEIG remains constant despite the change in the consumer load. One way to regulate the voltage and frequency of the SEIG is to maintain a constant load at its terminals. Also, such control scheme should be simple, economical, rugged and reliable. The use of DSP gives cost effective solution with least hardware complexity. The performance of SEIG can be further improved with STACOM based controller for reactive power compensation or voltage source converter with bidirectional active and reactive power flow capability.

Book Synopsis Distributed Generation by : Loi Lei Lai
Download or read book Distributed Generation written by Loi Lei Lai and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-03-11 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Distributed power generation is a technology that could help to enable efficient, renewable energy production both in the developed and developing world. It includes all use of small electric power generators, whether located on the utility system, at the site of a utility customer, or at an isolated site not connected to the power grid. Induction generator (IG) is the most commonly used and cheapest technology, compatible with renewable energy resources. Permanent magnet (PM) generators have traditionally been avoided due to high fabrication costs; however, compared with IGs they are more reliable and productive. Distributed Generation thoroughly examines the principles, possibilities and limitations of creating energy with both IGs and PM generators. It takes an electrical engineering approach in the analysis and testing of these generators, and includes diagrams and extensive case study examples to better demonstrate how the integration of energy sources can be accomplished. The book also provides the practical tools needed to model and implement new techniques for generating energy through isolated or grid-connected systems. Besides a chapter introducing the technical, economic and environmental impacts of distributed generation, this book includes: an examination of various phase-balancing schemes for a three-phase IG operating on a single-phase power system; a coupled circuit 2-D finite element analysis of a grid-connected IG, with Steinmetz connection; a study of self-excited induction generator (SEIG) schemes for autonomous power systems, and the voltage and frequency control of SEIG with a slip-ring machine (SESRIG); a report on a PM synchronous generator with inset rotor for achieving a reduced voltage regulation when supplying an autonomous power system, and an analysis of its performance using a two-axis model and finite element method; experimental work on various IG and SEIG schemes. This book is a must-read for engineers, consultants, regulators, and environmentalists involved in energy production and delivery, helping them to evaluate renewable energy sources and to integrate these into an efficient energy delivery system. It is also a superior reference for undergraduates and postgraduates. Designers, operators, and planners will appreciate its unique contribution to the literature in this field.

Book Synopsis Circle Diagram Approach for Self Excited Induction Generators by : Eduard Muljadi
Download or read book Circle Diagram Approach for Self Excited Induction Generators written by Eduard Muljadi and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When an induction generator is connected to a utility line supply, the voltage and frequency at the terminal output are the same as the voltage and frequency of the utility line supply to which the generator is connected. The reactive power needed by the induction generator is supplied by the utility and the real power is returned to the utility. With a fixed frequency dictated by the utility, the induction machine starts generating above the synchronous speed. The range of speed is also limited by the slip. At a very high slip, the copper losses increases as the current increases. On the other hand, in an isolated operation, the induction generator operates in self-excitation mode. It determines its own voltage and frequency. These two quantities depend on the size of the AC capacitor, the induction machine parameters, the electrical load, and the speed of the generator. The operating speed of the induction generator is extended without generating excessive loss. This paper presents an analytical study by utilizing a circle diagram to illustrate the operation of the induction generator in isolated operation. The steady-state calculations are presented to support the analysis. Possible applications for the system in variable-speed generation are currently under investigation. The output can be directly connected to equipment that is non-sensitive to the frequency (a heater, battery charger, etc.) or can be connected to a converter to get a fixed-frequency AC output.
