Book excerpt: Excerpt from Volcanic Hazards at Mount Rainier, Washington Mount Rainier is a large stratovolcano of andesitic rock in the Cascade Range of western Washington (fig. Al though the volcano. As. It now stands was almost completely formed before the last major glaciation, geologic formations record a variety of events that have occurred at the volcano in postglacial time. Repetition of some of these events today without warning would result in property damage and loss of life on a catastrophic scale. It is appropriate, there fore, to examine the extent, frequency, and apparent origin of these phenomena and to attempt to predict the effects on man of similar events in the future. Book excerpt: During postglacial time Mount Rainier volcano apparently was characterized by long quiet periods punctuated by brief episodes of activity; thus, its present dormant state cannot be regarded as a reliable sign that the volcano is now extinct. If the pattern of past activity continues, a substantial steam, pumice, or lava eruption might occur on an average of one each 500-1,000 years. The direct hazard presented by future eruptions of lava, pumice, or steam is not regarded as great, but such eruptions may cause devastating floods and debris flows. Whatever their origin, debris flows are regarded as a major hazard because of their frequency and movement along valley floors where works of man are concentrated. Their destructive effects can be minimized by careful land-use planning on valley floors.--p.24.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Potential Hazards From Future Eruptions of Mount St. Helens Volcano, Washington Mount St. Helens is a symmetrical volcanic cone in southwestern Washington about 75 km northeast of Portland, Oreg. (fig. Most ofthe visible part of the cone has been formed within the last thousand years, but it overlies an older volcanic center that evidently came into existence before years ago (hyde, 1975, p. Bio). Mount St. Helens has had a long history of spasmodic explosive activity, and we believe it to be an especially dangerous volcano because of its past behavior and the relatively high frequency of its eruptions during the last years (table In the future.
