Book excerpt: If you hunger for something, but do not know what it is, this journey of science and spirit may be the most fulfilling and exciting one that you will ever take. Its the true story of Judith Pennington, a busy writer, peace group director and single mother who, at age 38, denies the existence of God, yet finds herself in a fascinating search for the identity of a voice giving the wisest, most sensible guidance shes ever heard. Who or what is the source of the lyrical "writings" that guide her out of darkness into light over a period of twelve years? Finding out takes Pennington into the depths of her own psyche and on life-changing journeys in Medjugorje, Findhorn and the Scottish isle of Iona. In this adventure of consciousness, the author walks in the light of the psychic, and, in these expanded senses, reaches her destiny, higher perspectives and the blossoming of her unique gifts and talents. This is the universal path promised to one and all by The Voice of the Soul, a personal journey through the self, inspired writing, the secrets of the soul, and the science of spirituality, meditation and God.

Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book A Kirkus Reviews Best Book of 2012 A bold approach to understanding the American evangelical experience from an anthropological and psychological perspective by one of the country's most prominent anthropologists. Through a series of intimate, illuminating interviews with various members of the Vineyard, an evangelical church with hundreds of congregations across the country, Tanya Luhrmann leaps into the heart of evangelical faith. Combined with scientific research that studies the effect that intensely practiced prayer can have on the mind, When God Talks Back examines how normal, sensible people—from college students to accountants to housewives, all functioning perfectly well within our society—can attest to having the signs and wonders of the supernatural become as quotidian and as ordinary as laundry. Astute, sensitive, and extraordinarily measured in its approach to the interface between science and religion, Luhrmann's book is sure to generate as much conversation as it will praise.

Book excerpt: "Voices" is about 'Intimacy with God!' - A call to a deeper relationship with our Creator. In today's society, where so many voices are fighting for our attention; hearing, listening and discerning God's voice can prove challenging. "Voices" points us back to where it all went wrong - the garden of Eden, where listening to the wrong voice resulted in sin and separation from God. It aims to assist every child of God in understanding God's response to mankind after the Fall. It helps us fathom the complete work of Christ as well as how the Gospel invites us back into intimacy with God and His son Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit. "Voices" will ignite a desire within your heart to hear more of God's voice by attempting to answer questions of the human heart and soul about personal identity, destiny, certainty, and serenity. It will empower the reader to apply Godly counsel in their everyday lives and will assist the reader in developing the skill of making God-fearing decisions. Furthermore, it will equip every believer of the Gospel to silence ungodly voices and empower them to choose life over death. This book has various tools and applications ranging from personal studies to ways of igniting personal revival, and mentoring leaders towards deeper devotion and consecration before God. "Voices" and its successful application will restore a desire for honesty and intimacy with God as well as a desire to live a life that honours and worships Him.

Book excerpt: The Open Access version of this book, available at www.taylorfrancis.com/books/9781472453983, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivative 4.0 license. Experiences of hearing the voice of God (or angels, demons, or other spiritual beings) have generally been understood either as religious experiences or else as a feature of mental illness. Some critics of traditional religious faith have dismissed the visions and voices attributed to biblical characters and saints as evidence of mental disorder. However, it is now known that many ordinary people, with no other evidence of mental disorder, also hear voices and that these voices not infrequently include spiritual or religious content. Psychological and interdisciplinary research has shed a revealing light on these experiences in recent years, so that we now know much more about the phenomenon of "hearing voices" than ever before. The present work considers biblical, historical, and scientific accounts of spiritual and mystical experiences of voice hearing in the Christian tradition in order to explore how some voices may be understood theologically as revelatory. It is proposed that in the incarnation, Christian faith finds both an understanding of what it is to be fully human (a theological anthropology), and God’s perfect self-disclosure (revelation). Within such an understanding, revelatory voices represent a key point of interpersonal encounter between human beings and God.
