Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. A pioneer in scientific vocational counseling, Edward K. Strong, Jr., devised the Strong Vocational Interest Blank some years ago as a tool to help the counselor find out what kind of work a young person is best suited for. In this volume Mr. Strong reports on a study which he undertook to determine the validity of the interest blank in predicting the future vocations of individuals. For this study, the interest scores of several hundred former college students were compared with the occupations in which these men were engaged 18 years later. The results provide answers to basic questions regarding the use of interest scores in vocational counseling. The findings also serve to confirm or modify the conclusions published earlier by Mr. Strong in his book Vocational Interests in Men and Women (a volume for which he was awarded the Butler Silver Medal by Columbia University). The original group whim the present study is based consisted of 884 Stanford University graduates whose interests had been revealed by the use of the Vocational Interest Blank while they were in college. Follow-up data on their actual careers are presented and analyzed for approximately three fourths of this number, the remainder being eliminated because they were engaged in occupations for which no specific scales were available. In addition to revising and amplifying Mr. Strong's earlier work on the subject, this volume outlines a number of developments which provoke new problems and point the way for future research.

This book was released on 1987 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of a course of study developed at the University of Washington to provide a career education class at the beginning of the high school experience for special education students who are mildly handicapped in Tacoma Public Schools. The problem was to determine the change in career and vocational interests in students resulting from interaction between the student and a curriculum Implemented in the career education class. The treatment for the study was a career education program involving eighteen weeks of instruction. This program was designed to teach mildly handicapped students, grades 10-12 to use personal effectiveness techniques and activities to improve their self-esteem and behavioral control. Vocational assessment can assist in learning vocation strength/weaknesses and better understand job tasks common to occupational clusters. Through training in job seeking and retention, students should gain confidence in approaching employers requesting work for which they are qualified given their performance during work sampling. The Career Assessment Inventory was used to determine the subjects' interest relative to the Administrative Indices and General Theme scores provided by the test. The design for the study utilized a multivariate repeated measures design. The treatment was a career education program. T-Tests on four administrative subscales and General Theme scales will be taken as clusters for two multivariate repeated measures analysis to calculate differences in the pretest-posttest. Based on the results of the data using a multivariate repeated measures analysis, there appeared to be little evidence that the treatment had a significant effect on student's mean scores for the four (4) Administrative Indices or the six (6) General Theme scales. It can be concluded that the interaction of the students with the treatment does not influence a significant change in students' measured interests.

Book Synopsis The Dimensions of General Vocational Interests by :
Download or read book The Dimensions of General Vocational Interests written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this report is to examine individual differences in the dimensions underlying high school students' interest preferences at the level of general themes and activities. The study discussed examined the structure of the general vocational interests of 2709 male and female high school students in Australia. It formed part of the longitudinal study 'Youth in Transition', which is a national probability sample of Australian youth. Participants completed a 24-item questionnaire that reflected the personality and vocational interest typology of Holland. Multidimensional scaling was used to analyse the intercorrelation matrix and a three-dimensional solution demonstrated only partial support for the circular ordering of interests. The theoretical consistency of the hexagonal arrangement was evaluated using a randomisation test and yielded a correspondence index of only 0.24. A quasi-spherical configuration of interests emerged and the underlying dimensions of interests, namely Things vs People and Data vs Ideas were supported. Results have implications for the classification of interests and possible explanations of these results are discussed. [Introduction, ed].
