This book was released on 2017-07-25 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vivisection, Scientifically and Ethically Considered in Prize Essays The Essays given in were adjudicated upon by seven eminent gentlemen whose names will be found on anotherpage, and who kindly consented to act as J udges. They examined the Essays submitted to them with scrupulous care, and the conclusion arrived at was, that each of the three Essays published in this volume had two J ndges in its favour as the best. In these circumstances, the seventh J adge did not feel warranted to decide the question, and thought it better, with the consent of all parties, to divi de the award among the three authors, and publish their Essays. This has secured a fuller treatment of the subject than could have been done by the work of one author, which is a gain to the cause. It will thus be seen that the order in which the Essays appear in this volume does not indicate the order of merit; for they had each the sufi'rages of the same number of J udges. Book Synopsis Antivivisection and Medical Science in Victorian Society by : Richard D. French
Download or read book Antivivisection and Medical Science in Victorian Society written by Richard D. French and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-12 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Late nineteenth-century England witnessed the emergence of a vociferous and well-organzied movement against the use of living animals in scientific research, a protest that threatened the existence of experimental medicine. Richard D. French views the Victorian antivivisection movement as a revealing case study in the attitude of modern society toward science. The author draws on popular pamphlets and newspaper accounts to recreate the structure, tactics, ideology, and personalities of the early antivivisection movement. He argues that at the heart of the antivivisection movement was public concern over the emergence of science and medicine as leading institutions of Victorian society--a concern, he suggests, that has its own contemporary counterparts. In addition to providing a social and cultural history of the Victorian antivivisection movement, the book sheds light on many related areas, including Victorian political and administrative history, the political sociology of scientific communities, social reform and voluntary associations, the psychoanalysis of human attitudes toward animals, and Victorian feminism. Richard D. French is a Science Advisor with the Science Council of Canada. Originally published in 1975. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alice Crary offers a transformative account of moral thought about human beings and animals. Instead of assuming that the world places no demands on our moral imagination, she underscores the urgency of treating the exercise of moral imagination as necessary for arriving at an adequate world-guided understanding of human beings and animals.
