Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning in the 1950s, an explosion in rural-urban migration dramatically increased the population of cities throughout Peru, leading to an acute housing shortage and the proliferation of self-built shelters clustered in barriadas, or squatter settlements. Improvised Cities examines the history of aided self-help housing, or technical assistance to self-builders, which took on a variety of forms in Peru from 1954 to 1986. While the postwar period saw a number of trial projects in aided self-help housing throughout the developing world, Peru was the site of significant experiments in this field and pioneering in its efforts to enact a large-scale policy of land tenure regularization in improvised, unauthorized cities. Gyger focuses on three interrelated themes: the circumstances that made Peru a fertile site for innovation in low-cost housing under a succession of very different political regimes; the influences on, and movements within, architectural culture that prompted architects to consider self-help housing as an alternative mode of practice; and the context in which international development agencies came to embrace these projects as part of their larger goals during the Cold War and beyond.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need for housing has increased significantly during the last decades all over the world. It is felt particularly in countries where the population growth rate is high and the economy is developing fast; but everywhere people are shifting from the countryside to towns, where housing in neighbourhoods often becomes critical. The need for affordable housing may concern high-rate urbanization, rural areas to be upgraded, workers’ settlements in remote regions, rebuilding dwellings destroyed by disasters such as earthquakes, floods or wars, and even holiday resorts and leisure dwellings. Large projects always face cost- and time-constraints. Local conditions may be variable with respect to the physical, social and economic environment. Thus, minimising cost and time of construction, while maximising quantity and quality of product, may lead to different solutions. The concept of “affordable”, meaning compatibility of demand and means, is well understood as such everywhere, although its practical application may be much different from place to place. Concrete is a material that lends itself well to affordable housing: it is durable, has good thermal inertia, can be used both as structural and finishing material, and is not sensitive to organic attack. It also has some disadvantages, such as higher cost in developing countries compared to developed countries, and also a potential lack of materials, mainly cement or admixtures. Prefabrication, with its adaptability and quality consciousness, may offer valid, speedy, cost efficient and sustainable solutions. fib Bulletin 60 offers an overview of housing systems as well as information on their features. It shows the main features of a number of construction systems, without entering into the details of the solutions. It aims to make possible a comprehensive comparison, which should help in learning, exchanging and developing ideas on how to better meet the housing needs everywhere, at sustainable cost. A document of this kind was not available before; it is therefore expected to be of great interest and a source of ideas for all those who have to confront similar problems.

Book Synopsis Building the Inclusive City by : Nilson Ariel Espino
Download or read book Building the Inclusive City written by Nilson Ariel Espino and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-03-24 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban segregation is one of the main challenges facing urban development around the globe. The usual outcome of many urban development patterns is an unequal social geography, with the urban poor living in large clusters that are remote, isolated, dangerous or unhealthy. The result is inequality in a number of dimensions of urban life, from deficient urban access, services or infrastructure to social isolation, neighbourhood violence, and lack of economic opportunity. This book brings together debates on ethnic and economic segregation, combining theory and practical solutions to create a guide for those trying to understand and address urban segregation in any part of the world, and integrate ameliorating policies to contemporary urban development agendas.
Book Synopsis Post DomestiCity by : Diego Garcia-Setien
Download or read book Post DomestiCity written by Diego Garcia-Setien and published by Actar D, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-07-06 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PostDomestiCity is an inquiry and speculative exercise into the conditions of obsolescence in the post-industrial city, from a contemporary perspective. Working with three paradigmatic cases that were conceived from industrial logics—the Packard plant in Detroit, Lima’s PREVI neighbourhood, and theGrand’Mare complex in Rouen—, we explore alternative ways of reusing, reprogramming, and redensifying the built environment as alternatives to demolition. Relevant voices in the field of architecture share their approaches and visions of the future for the pre-existing city, helping us imagine post-domesticity in the current climate crisis and socio-technological context.
