Download or read book Vesuvius written by Flavio Dobran and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2006-06-07 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: VESUVIUS 2000 is an interdisciplinary project aimed at producing a safe and prosperous habitat for the people living around Vesuvius. To produce this environment requires an effective collaboration between the experts and the public, whereby the danger from the volcano is used to reorganize the territory and thus produce new opportunities for the people surrounding the volcano. As an all inclusive physico-mathematical-computer model of the volcano, the Global Volcanic Simulator is a key tool for determining the effects of different eruption scenarios and thus for urban planning of the territory. Unlike the evacuation plans which tend to manage emergencies, VESUVIUS 2000 aims at preparing the Vesuvius area to confront future eruptions with minimal socio-economic and cultural consequences.* Addresses volcanic risk mitigation in densely populated area surrounding Vesuvius* Provides education about volcanos* Displays physical modeling of eruption processes and integration of models

Download or read book The Lion's Share written by Guido Alfani and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-02-07 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the most in-depth analysis of inequality and social polarization ever attempted for a preindustrial society. Using data from the archives of the Venetian Terraferma, and compared with information available for elsewhere in Europe, Guido Alfani and Matteo Di Tullio demonstrate that the rise of the fiscal-military state served to increase economic inequality in the early modern period. Preindustrial fiscal systems tended to be regressive in nature, and increased post-tax inequality compared to pre-tax - in contrast to what we would assume is the case in contemporary societies. This led to greater and greater disparities in wealth, which were made worse still as taxes were collected almost entirely to fund war and defence rather than social welfare. Though focused on Old Regime Europe, Alfani and Di Tullio's findings speak to contemporary debates about the roots of inequality and social stratification.

Book Synopsis The Human Sustainable City by : Bruno Forte
Download or read book The Human Sustainable City written by Bruno Forte and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-04 with total page 573 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2003. Seven years after Habitat II culminated with the Istanbul agreement on Sustainable Urban Development, this book brings together many of the world's leading experts from the fields of architecture, urban planning, economics, sociology, politics, environment and geography to assess the successes and failures in fulfilling the objectives decided upon at this historic meeting. Illustrated with a wide range of case studies, this volume is divided into three main sections; firstly examining the challenges, secondly, the approaches, and finally, the practices. The book represents a critical appraisal not only of the issues related to urban development but also of the modalities to face these issues from real examples, these in return can be used as starting points to construct new 'real utopias' or at least, to future 'best practices'.
Book Synopsis Building the New Man by : Francesco Cassata
Download or read book Building the New Man written by Francesco Cassata and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2011-05-15 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on previously unexplored archival documentation, this book offers the first general overview of the history of Italian eugenics, not limited to the decades of Fascist regime, but instead ranging from the beginning of the 1900s to the first half of the 1970s. Discusses several fundamental themes of the comparative history of eugenics: the importance of the Latin eugenic model; the relationship between eugenics and fascism; the influence of Catholicism on the eugenic discourse and the complex links between genetics and eugenics. It examines the Liberal pre-fascist period and the post-WW2 transition from fascist and racial eugenics to medical and human genetics. As far as fascist eugenics is concerned, the book provides a refreshing analysis, considering Italian eugenics as the most important case-study in order to define Latin eugenics as an alternative model to its Anglo-American, German and Scandinavian counterparts. Analyses in detail the nature-nurture debate during the State racist campaign in fascist Italy (1938–1943) as a boundary tool in the contraposition between the different institutional, political and ideological currents of fascist racism.

Download or read book Families and Family Values in Society and Culture written by Isabelle Albert and published by IAP. This book was released on 2021-05-01 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book which has been created in the framework of the EU-funded COST Action INTERFASOL brings together researchers from 22 INTERFASOL countries, who frame intergenerational family solidarity in the specific historical, cultural, social and economic context of their own country. Integrating different perspectives from social and political sciences, economics, communication, health and psychology, the book offers country-specific knowledge and new insights into family relations, family values and family policies across Europe. Praise for Families and Family Values in Society and Culture: "This comprehensive study of families in Europe reveals the strength and variation in family solidarity and values. By drawing together detailed descriptions of continuity and change, Families and Family Values in Society and Culture provides a fascinating account of the social and cultural contexts that shape European family life. The case studies of families in different European countries compare demographic and welfare regimes to consider the challenges facing generations in Europe and responses to these. The book is an invaluable resource for researchers studying family life and inter-generational solidarity." Clare Holdsworth Professor of Social Geography Keele University "This book is based on the testimony of experts, each of them proposing analyses which are specific to their own society. It provides an opportunity for the reader to take a new look at the evolution of intergenerational solidarity in 22 countries, whose wealth, welfare systems, and demographic situations, as well as recent events (wars, migratory movements, …) offer specific challenges. It adopts the perspective of the insider to shed light not only on culture and values in each country, but also on conflicts between tradition and modernity, and between subcultures in the same society. The book thus allows better understanding of changes in intergenerational and gender relations, and the variety of solutions implemented or suggested to promote more satisfactory expressions of intergenerational solidarity for the next decade. Families and Family Values in Society and Culture provides an invaluable contribution for cross-cultural and social sciences researchers interested in understanding how different forms of solidarity arise from family and social dynamics." Anne Marie Fontaine Professor of Psychology University of Porto

Book Synopsis Handbook on fish age determination: a Mediterranean experience by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book Handbook on fish age determination: a Mediterranean experience written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2019-05-31 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook provides guidance on methods for use in fish ageing studies. Fish age, among other biological parameters, is one of the most relevant pieces of data to attain sustainable exploitation levels of fishery resources. Indeed, most analytical methods used in stock assessment require knowledge of demographic structure according to age of stocks, as well as to recruitment, growth, maturity, natural mortality, etc., which are strictly linked to information on age and age structure. The handbook was put together to deal with identified gaps – which affect both the precision and the accuracy of estimations – regarding ageing schemes, criteria and methodologies used in preparing calcified structures. It focuses on the general principles that underpin age analysis (assignment of birth date, preparation methods, aging scheme reading and identification of true and false rings). Crucially, it aims to contribute to the establishment of common analysis methods, which can enable better calibration across the diverse institutes involved, thereby improving the quality and reliability of results.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a genre situated at the crossroad of rhetoric and fiction, declamatio offers the freedom to experiment with new forms of discourse. Placing the literariness of declamatio into the spotlight, this volume showcases declamation as a realm of genuine literary creation with its own theoretical underpinning, literary technique and generic conventions. Focusing on the oeuvre of (Ps)Quintilian, this volume demonstrates that these texts constitute a genre on their own, the rhetorical and literary framework of which remains not yet fully mapped. It is of interest to students and scholars of Rhetoric and Roman Literature.
