Book Synopsis Proscribed Telugu Literature and National Movement in Andhra, 1920-1947 by : Penta Sivunnaidu
Download or read book Proscribed Telugu Literature and National Movement in Andhra, 1920-1947 written by Penta Sivunnaidu and published by Spotlight Poets. This book was released on 2002 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gandhian phase of national movement offered to the people a number of constructive programmes and political movements. The success of these programmes and movements depended on politicization and mobilization of the masses. In communicating and propagating the political ideas of the nationalist leaders to the masses the nationalist intelligentsia of Andhra played an effective and remarkable role. They were influenced by the Gandhian ideology and political techniques and through their writings influenced the people to a great extent. They made the people to believe, to accept, to support, to involve and to participate in the national movement. They criticised the colonial rule and authorised the national movement. In the process they wrote dramas, songs, books, pamphlets, leaflets and articles in newspapers imbuing the people with patriotic fervour, indomitable courage and heroic-sacrifice to an extraordinary degree. The consequent efflorescence of nationalist literature contributed to the formation of people s national consciousness and their voluntary participation in the national movement to such an extent that the colonial Government began to sense a threat to its own existence and was forced to resort to proscription and suppression of ideas and oppression of the freedom of the press.

Book Synopsis Text and Tradition in South India by : Velcheru Narayana Rao
Download or read book Text and Tradition in South India written by Velcheru Narayana Rao and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2017-06-01 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essays on Telugu and South Indian literature and culture by distinguished Telugu scholar Narayana Rao. Velcheru Narayana Raos contribution to understanding Indian cultural history, literary production, and intellectual lifespecifically from the vantage of the Andhra regionhas few parallels. He is one of the very rare scholars to be able to reflect magisterially on the precolonial and colonial periods. He moves easily between Sanskrit and the vernacular traditions, and between the worlds of orality and script. This is because of his mastery of the classical Telugu tradition. As Sanjay Subrahmanyam puts it in his Introduction, To command nearly a thousand years of a literary tradition is no small feat, but more important still is VNRs ability constantly to offer fresh readings and provocative frameworks for interpretation. The essays and reflections in Text and Tradition in South India bring together the diverse and foundational contributions made by Narayana Rao to the rewriting of Indias cultural and literary history. The book is for anyone interested in the history of Indian ideas, the social and cultural history of South India, and the massive intellectual traditions of the subcontinent.

Book Synopsis Cultures of Memory in South Asia by : D. Venkat Rao
Download or read book Cultures of Memory in South Asia written by D. Venkat Rao and published by Springer Science & Business. This book was released on 2014-05-02 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Culture of Memory in South Asia reconfigures European representations of India as a paradigmatic extension of a classical reading, which posits the relation between text and context in a determined way. It explores the South Asian cultural response to European “textual” inheritances. The main argument of this work is that the reflective and generative nodes of Indian cultural formations are located in the configurations of memory, the body and idiom (verbal and visual), where the body or the body complex becomes the performative effect and medium of articulated memories. This work advances its arguments by engaging with mnemocultures-cultures of memory that survive and proliferate in speech and gesture. Drawing on Sanskrit and Telugu reflective sources, this work emphasizes the need to engage with cultural memory and the compositional modes of Indian reflective traditions. This important and original work focuses on the ruptured and stigmatised resources of heterogeneous Indian traditions and calls for critical humanities that move beyond the colonially configured received traditions. Cultures of Memory suggests the possibilities of transcultural critical humanities research and teaching initiatives from the Indian context in today’s academy.
