Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Certain modern radio systems that rely on trans-ionospheric propagation require knowledge of changes in total electron content (TEC). Understanding rapidly changing, small amplitude perturbations in the ionosphere is important in order to quantify the accuracy of those systems. The main aim of this thesis is to collect statistical information on the perturbations and wave structures present in the ionosphere, for use in radio astronomy calibrations and future communication systems planning. To gain this information, TEC calculated from instruments measuring Faraday rotation on signals from geostationary satellites were used. These measurements were collected in Italy over the period of 19751982 and 1989-1991 at one minute intervals. An important class of TEC fluctuations is travelling ionospheric disturbances (TIDs). Here, temporal variations of mid-latitude slant TEC measurements during two solar cycle phases, i.e solar minimum in 1975-1976 and solar maximum in 1989-1990, were studied. Direct inspection of Savitzky-Golay filtered TEC data was used to extract the amplitudes of TIDs. Fourier analysis was used to extract the most dominant periods of the TIDs. Discrete Meyer wavelet together with the ANOVA method to determine TID variation changes in different parts of the day. Another class of TEC fluctuations presented in this thesis is diurnal double maxima (DDM) structures. These structures were observed during mid-day in our TEC measurements between 1975 and 1991. Verification of the DDM observations was sought by using foF2 and hmF2 measurements from an ionosonde in Rome A combination of ionospheric 3-D tomographic imaging and ray propagation theory has been used for the first time to demonstrate a method that can show how the new European radio array LOFAR will be affected by the ionosphere. This was achieved from a case study of a geomagnetic quiet day ionosphere by simulating how ray propagations, at different elevations and frequencies, will behave as they traverse the ionosphere. The important result from this study was that continuous monitoring of the telescope will be important during operation of the array if the errors introduced by the ionosphere are to be accurately corrected for. The study of TEC changes over different short time windows demonstrated that the ionosphere vastly varies over short time scales, thus making the monitory non trivial. Statistical analysis of the TEC changes will also be useful to the new European GPS augmentation system EGNOS as an indicator on whether the ionospheric measurements from the system are realistic.

Book excerpt: Scientific Study from the year 2016 in the subject Physics - Nuclear Physics, grade: excellent, , language: English, abstract: Abstract Ionospheric electron density affects trans-ionospheric radio waves. Estimating electron density, therefore, is vital to mitigate the effect of ionosphere on radio waves. As a result, different methods have been applied to estimate ionospheric electron density from integrated measurements of ground-based GPS (Global Positioning System) receivers recently installed in East-Africa. To augment such efforts, ionospheric electron density has been estimated from Radio Occultation (RO) total electron content data measured by LEO (Low Earth Orbit) satellites. Abel inversion onion peeling algorithm then is used to retrieve electron density profiles from the calibrated data. The reconstructed electron density profiles have been validated by running the standard ionospheric empirical model (International Reference Ionosphere, IRI-2007) at time and locations that RO electron density profiles are obtained. The results show well agreement between the Abel inversion and IRI-2007 electron density profiles, for both bottom and topside ionosphere. Also, F2 peak density heights from Abel inversion and IRI-2007 have shown well agreement. However, significant discrepancy has been detected around the height of the F2 peak density.

Book excerpt: Abstract : The ionospheric total electron content (TEC) is the integrated electron density across a unit area. TEC is an important property of the ionosphere. Accurate estimation of TEC and TEC spatial distributions are needed for many space-based applications such as precise positioning, navigation, and timing. The Global Positioning System (GPS) provides one of the most versatile methods for measuring the ionosphere TEC, as it has global coverage, high temporal resolution, and relatively high spatial resolution. The objective of this thesis is to develop an algorithm for accurate estimation of the TEC using dual-frequency GPS receiver measurements and simultaneously estimate the receiver hardware bias in order to mitigate its effect on the TEC. This method assumes the TEC in the portion of sky visible to the receiver can be represented as a two dimensional sheet with an absolute value and spacial gradients with respect to latitude and longitude. A code-phase multipath noise estimation algorithm is integrated with the TEC estimation process to mitigate environmental multipath contamination of the measurements. The integrated algorithm produces an approximate map of local TEC using a single dual-frequency receiver while minimizing both multipath induced errors and the receiver hardware bias. The goal of this method is to provide an accurate map of the ionosphere TEC, in the region local to the receiver, without the need for a network of receivers and in the absence of knowledge of the receiver hardware induced bias. This thesis describes the algorithm, its implementation, and attempts to validate the method through comparison with incoherent scatter radar (ISR) data from low, mid, and high latitude locations.

Book excerpt: Analytical techniques are available which make use of the Faraday polarization rotation and the Doppler frequency shift phenomena for determining the ionospheric electron content by the passive monitoring of radio wave transmissions emanating from earth satellites. The accuracy of the various techniques can be evaluated by the simulator-computer program described in this report. The major components of the simulator consist of a satellite-orbit generator, a time-variant three-dimensional electron density model and an earth magnetic field model expressed in terms of a series of spherical harmonics. Ray tracings are performed utilizing Simpson's rule for numerical integration of the definite integrals defining the propagation phenomena. Preliminary results are presented of an analysis performed for one location in the midlatitudes. (Author).

Book excerpt: A simple presentation of ionospheric characteristics, including the D-, E-, and F-regions, is followed by a general description of electromagnetic waves. One of the more important effects of ionospheric interactions with the Very High Frequency (VLF) and Ultra High Frequency (UHF) radio waves, which are used in modern electronic detection and tracking systems, is refraction. Total electron content (TEC) measurements over specific locations are used as data inputs to numerical models of the ionosphere. Some of the basic considerations for measuring TEC of the ionosphere using the Faraday technique and the group-path-delay technique, and a discussion of variation of TEC are included.

This book was released on 2019 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research of this dissertation is studying the ionosphere by GPS radio occultation (RO) techniques. It is mainly divided into two parts. The first part focuses on the methodology in electron density profile retrievals from RO measurements. It aims to get more precise profiles from measured data. Classic Abel inversion is a methodology widely used in RO retrievals, and the error introduced by the spherical symmetry assumption is also well recognised. Separability Method (SM) was developed to eliminate this error in previous studies. In this work, the improvement brought by SM corresponding to classic method is checked and validated. The SM does have better performance excluding the Lack of Collocation (LoC) error. The precision of the results is also shown to depend on the accuracy of the supported GIMs, i.e., the more accurate GIMs are used, the better results can be obtained. The error in SM, introduced by the mis-modelling of using the Vertical Total Electron Content (VTEC) instead of ECLEO, the electron content below LEO height, is also checked. The result shows that it has only minor impact on the retrievals. The second part is the climatological study of topside ionosphere/bottomside plasmasphere based on the RO retrievals using SM, and aims to give a general picture of characteristics and features of these two regions in different solar periods, 2007 -- solar minimum, and 2014 – solar maximum. The empirical two-components models of topside profiles, STIP model and CPDH model, used to separate the ionospheric and plasmaspheric contribution to the VTEC measured from ground to global positioning system (GPS) satellite altitudes, are studied and validated. The conditions of applicability of the STIP model are also discussed. The same as other existing empirical models, it shows the picture of topside ionosphere till some limited altitude, which is decided by the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite height used to observe the RO. The model is used to derive transition height hu and scale height hs during these two years. Generally, hu and hs show the clear diurnal, seasonal, solar cycle dependencies. The concept of IONf, the ionospheric fractional contribution to VTEC, is introduced and studied. The ionospheric features are shown and most of the ionospheric anomalies have been analyzed through this quantity. Compared to the other ionospheric related parameters, such as Ecion and Ecpl, electron content of ionosphere and plasmasphere, IONf is more stable. Hence, it is more suitable for ionosphere modelling. The Capacitor Model is used to model the consistent ‘ionospheric charging process' during the period of the day between sunrise and midday/afternoon. The model shows a good performance to reproduce real data in different circumstances and for the maximum and minimum solar activity years analyzed.
