Book excerpt: One of the defining attributes of the human species is sophisticated communication, for which facial expressions are crucial. Traditional research has so far mainly investigated a minority of 6 basic emotional expressions displayed as pictures. Despite the important insights of this approach, its ecological validity is limited: facial movements express more than emotions, and facial expressions are more than just pictures. The objective of the present thesis is therefore to improve the understanding of facial expression recognition by investigating the internal representations of a large range of facial expressions, displayed both as static pictures and as dynamic videos. To this end, it was necessary to develop and validate a new facial expression database which includes 20.000 stimuli of 55 expressions (study 1). Perceptual representations of the six basic emotional expressions were found previously to rely on evaluation of valence and arousal; study 2 showed that this evaluation generalises to many more expressions, particularly when displayed as videos. While it is widely accepted that knowledge influences perception, how these are linked is largely unknown; study 3 investigated this question by asking how knowledge about facial expressions, instantiated as conceptual representations, relates to perceptual representations of these expressions. A strong link was found which changed with the kind of expressions and the type of display. In probably the most extensive behavioural studies (with regards to the number of facial expressions used) to date, this thesis suggests that there are commonalities but also differences in processing of emotional and of other types of facial expressions. Thus, to understand facial expression processing, one needs to consider more than the 6 basic emotional expressions. These findings outline first steps towards a new domain in facial expression research, which has implications for a number of research and application fields where facial expressions play a role, ranging from social, developmental, and clinical psychology to computer vision and affective computing research.

Whereas our understanding of specific functional domains involved in face perception is growing, there is further pressing demand for a multidisciplinary approach toward a more integrated view, describing how face perception ability relates to and develops with other domains of sensory and cognitive functioning. In this research topic we bring together a collection of papers that provide a shot of the current state of the art of theorizing and investigating face perception from the perspective of multiple ability domains. Several manipulations were performed to examine the visual system's sensitivity to dynamic in comparison to static facial expression displays. Experiment 1 investigated subjects' sensitivity to changes in the duration of a neutral expression embedded in a dynamic sequence. The sequences depicted a change in emotion from sadness to happiness (or vice versa). Both forward and backward presentation were utilized. The results showed sensitivity to subtle information associated with the presentation direction of a facial expression sequence. This proved to be independent of the type of presentation used, either real or induced. Experiment 2 was designed to screen for any possible artifacts (expressive noise) in the sequences and to establish a threshold of discriminability. The discriminability of the emotional expressions was found to be acute and judgment accuracy was approximately 100%. Nevertheless, this manipulation turned out to be sensitive to expressive noise present in the sequences suggesting that a sequence segment may, therefore, not accurately reflect the targeted emotion. Experiment 3 examined whether temporal parameters influence the perception of emotional expression. The results indicated that emotional intensity and realness judgments were only marginally affected by the speed variations. Experiment 4 compared the amount of information necessary for correctly identifying facial expressions presented either statically or dynamically. The results showed a none significant advantage of dynamic sequences over static ones only for short sequences. This suggests that after a certain amount of information is presented no further benefit is gained. The advantage of dynamic expressions may be due to the contextual information preceding the required judgment Experiment 5 explored this hypothesis via a priming paradigm. The static primes affected the ambiguous test which was judged opposite to them. Dynamic primes showed no effect. Taken together these findings caution the use of static material in postulating underlying perceptual mechanisms associated with emotional facial. This series of experiments supports the ecological perspective by showing that dynamic facial expressions contain relevant veridical contextual information which, as opposed to static facial expressions, is relatively immune to non veridical contextual influence.

For example, when we furrow our eyebrows in anger, blood rushes in and a reddish color becomes apparent around that area of the face. Surprisingly, these image properties have not been exploited to recognize the facial action units (AUs) associated with these expressions. Herein, we present the first system to do recognition of AUs and their intensities using these functional color changes. These color features are shown to be robust to changes in identity, gender, race, ethnicity and skin color. Because these image changes are given by functions rather than vectors, we use a functional classifiers to identify the most discriminant color features of an AU and its intensities. We demonstrate that, using these discriminant color features, one can achieve results superior to those of the state-of-the-art. Lastly, the study of emotion has reached an impasse that can only be addressed once we know which facial expressions are used within and across cultures in the wild, not in controlled lab conditions. Yet, no such studies exist. Here, we present the first large-scale study of the production and visual perception of facial expressions of emotion in the wild. We find that of the 16,384 possible facial configurations that people can produce, only 35 are successfully used to transmit emotive information across cultures, and 8 within a smaller number of cultures.

This led them to invent numerous types of vehicles to move fast over land, water and air. As training how to handle such vehicles and testing new developments can be dangerous and costly, vehicle motion simulators were invented. Motion-based simulators in particular, combine visual and physical motion cues to provide occupants with a feeling of being in the real vehicle. While visual cues are generally not limited in amplitude, physical cues certainly are, due to the limited simulator motion space. A motion cueing algorithm (MCA) is used to map the vehicle motions onto the simulator motion space. This mapping inherently creates mismatches between the visual and physical motion cues. Due to imperfections in the human perceptual system, not all visual/physical cueing mismatches are perceived. However, if a mismatch is perceived, it can impair the simulation realism and even cause simulator sickness. For MCA design, a good understanding of when mismatches are perceived, and ways to prevent these from occurring, are therefore essential. In this thesis a data-driven approach, using continuous subjective measures of the time-varying Perceived Motion Incongruence (PMI), is adopted. PMI in this case refers to the effect that perceived mismatches between visual and physical motion cues have on the resulting simulator realism. The main goal of this thesis was to develop an MCA-independent off-line prediction method for time-varying PMI during vehicle motion simulation, with the aim of improving motion cueing quality. To this end, a complete roadmap, describing how to measure and model PMI and how to apply such models to predict and minimize PMI in motion simulations is presented. Results from several human-in-the-loop experiments are used to demonstrate the potential of this novel approach.
