Music. 100 poems by 100 poets inspired by the life and works of Bob Dylan. Contributors include Robert Bly, Charles Bukowski, Johnny Cash, Diane di Prima, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Allen Ginsberg, Tony Hoagland, Yusef Komunyakaa, Dorianne Laux, Paul Muldoon, Linda Pastan, Patti Smith, and Charles Wright. "The poets included in this collection want no explanations from Dylan; they are busy, if anything, using him to explain themselves. These are the people who could hold entire conversations using only Dylan quotes and a few conjunctions. Some of them are people who first realized that the words count when they first listened to Dylan. That the way it's said is as important as what is said. They get it, and reading them makes me feel that I am in very congenial company."--Chris Smither, from the Foreword "If Bob Dylan has so many sides as to be a house of mirrors, then here are a hundred poets caught in the glass. Some worshipful, others still obsessed, or nostalgic, imitative, even rapacious, but all gathered together around a singer who shuffled words and music together to form a whole new deck. Imagine, one poet within a circle of a hundred poets!"--Billy Collins "In a pop culture of rapid, vertiginous change, when audiences are more fickle and ephemeral than any in history, Bob Dylan yet retains his stature and something of his original mystery."--Joyce Carol Oates "Here's a fine anthology of poems that rub shoulders with Bob Dylan's work in splendidly varied ways. There are renowned and unfamiliar poets here. Some have known or met him; all have heard that voice ('like a lone wolf's cry in the cold night,' says one). Some pay tribute to the immensity of his influence; some fight it; some confess. Some scatter fond and knowing allusions to his lines through theirs. Some love him; some resist. This is not hagiography in verse. It is voices celebrating voice, poetry engaging with song."--Dr. Michael Gray

Book excerpt: Bob Zuppke was head football coach at the University of Illinois from 1912 to 1941, a period that saw two world wars, a major economic depression, and significant changes in higher education and the role of sports, as major intercollegiate competitions became primary public relations events for the most competitive universities. Often credited with several significant football innovations including the huddle, Zuppke won two national championships and won or tied for seven Big Ten conference titles. This biography of Zuppke is a study of his passion for football, his advocacy for its educational value and his ability to promote and market the game to the academic community and the general public. It places him in the context of multiple themes, including the development of interscholastic, intercollegiate and professional football; presidential support and public relations; sports psychology; stadium building and commercial sports; academic criticism; the fraternity system; boosters; and sports in a state-supported public university.

Book excerpt: This book is about our life before and after Alzheimer's Disease invaded and how, over the subsequent ten years, we did our best to fight, learn, adjust and live with this heinous disease as it progressed. Using the Seven Stages of Alzheimer's Disease as the framework, I describe our experiences, some strategies we tried, what we learned from a variety of sources, our dilemmas, fears and honest feelings. Our story is about love and resilience, but also about the frustrations of finding appropriate services, financial constraints, the limits of Medicare and Medicaid, the ins-and-outs of the nursing home industry, and our search for what was right for Bob as the disease overtook him. Bob had a PhD in Experimental Psychology, but that didn't stop this disease from destroying his mind. I have a PhD in Special Education, but that didn't mean I knew what to do or how to do it. Through personal journal entries at various times, I share my thoughts, feelings and my anguish. I learned with Bob, and with the help of family and friends, how to support and care for him so that he knew that we would always love him. This was not an easy story to tell, but I hope it helps others.

Book excerpt: This book is the story about one individual who was born and grew up as a baby boomer in the United States. It begins by introducing his parents, who are Norwegian and grew up in Canada. They move to the United States, and soon after, Michael Larsen is born in California. The book begins by following Michael’s life from birth through high school and speaks to situations and events that happened in his personal life during that period. It also addresses actual world and national events as they happened in real time. The story progresses through his life as a soldier in the army and being sent to Vietnam. Once home from the war, he goes to college at Fresno State, meeting new friends, falling in love, and marrying. Family situations, jobs, social status, and political views continue to change as Michael ages and steps into changing technology, ever-increasing unrest throughout the world, and the new age of terrorism. The book ends with Michael retiring and reflecting on his life’s accomplishments and regrets as he enters the winter of his life. This book chronicles one person’s story of growing up in the generation known as baby boomers. There are seventy-five million other stories still untold; this is just one.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Endeavor: "..to try to do; to set about; to owe; to be under obligation; to try hard; to exert effort; to make an earnest attempt; to strive." Endeavor begins as a story of five families related by blood, marriage, and a sixth surrogate family by love and friendship. It was the sixth family that raised an important question for the author as to how he defines family. Are they (family) only those who are related by blood, marriage, or are they friendship, legal action, or something broader associated with functions that are similar to what we normally associate with a family? Endeavor is about people, who spent their entire lives striving to achieve something better for their families, themselves, and others without depreciating the value of their work, contribution, or others with whom they shared many things, not the least of which often was unemployment, and poverty. Only one thing could overwhelm them, fear of losing hope and their belief that things would be better. It was their mantra for living. Often beaten down, they were rarely overwhelmed. You will meet the Smiths, immigrants from central Germany early in the nineteenth century. You also will meet the Dungan's who came to the United States during the great potato famine in Ireland during the mid-1840s. Neither, as they frequently said, "Had a pot to pee in." The mix of these two families, three or four generations later, is responsible for the author's presence in a peculiar form of memoir. A second line of decent explains my wife's presence. Her family came from very old lines in England, specifically Cornwall, Devon, and Wales. Her father immigrated to the United States at the very beginning of the 20th century, and his future wife two years later. The story begins with the Smiths, peasants living in the Ruhr Valley early in the 19th Century where they labored in the coalmines and on their own small patch of land carved from the dark forest, which was their first step up the ladder of achievement. In those days work was communal, as was most of life's other requirements. The opening chapter is followed by the story of the Dungans, beginning in the early 1850s. They were dirt poor Irish, who traded a potato famine, starvation, and poverty, for a little land, in a new world, Kentucky. Both stories will take the reader to the Great Depression of the 1930's that shaped an American culture for two generations. The third chapter will introduces the Williams, Old, and Goss families, a treasure of Cornish cousins who formed tight family units for many generations, and who generously included my wife and myself to their group when I married into the Williams family. The Lows, our adopted family are introduced in the sixth chapter, Families at War. From there on, we leave it to the reader to sort out a remarkable collection of people who became the source of our human fire: "..When we were alone with the wind crying Offered us the warmth of a human fire." (Partial quote from Many Winters, by Nancy Wood)
