Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These poems are a return to a past century in their approach, in that they tell of love affairs, encounters, or personal crises in simple language rather than being cryptic crossword puzzles or displays of ingenious imagery. They are also a return to a more recent past in content, since many of them were written around 1980 after a seven-year period spent on the road. They describe impressions of exotic countries (both their poverty and their beauty), the adventures of a life of wandering and drug-induced indolence on paradisiac beaches, and the love affairs of an era when young men and women related to each other rather more freely than they do today. These poems were rejected by publishers at the time, when the hippie lifestyle was not thought to be of interest and poems were supposed to be academic wordgames, not neo-romantic expressions of personal experience. There are signs both attitudes are changing, as the baby-boomers enter a period of nostalgia for their youth (including the counter-culture that inspired its music) and we near the end of the long drawn-out death of Modernism, which reduced all art-forms to idiocy or sterility. The book ends with some more recent poems, which reflect on life, death, justice, faith, science, other lives, and other worlds.

Book excerpt: About the Book: The Voice of Kali is an empowering book for women of all ages and cultures. Kali is the goddess of empowerment and transformation. She symbolizes both spiritual and psychological liberation and is an archetype of awakening. The book takes the reader on a step-by-step internal journey leading to inner transformation and realization that the power to manifest, create and nurture is all seeded within you. Message from Ekta Bajaj- Author of The Voice of Kali-Winner of International Woman Icon Award 2021 It's a book that I hope every mother reads to her young daughter before she embarks on the journey to womanhood, so she is aware of the dormant innate power she holds. It's also a book that I wish that every daughter gifts her mother so she may honour her energy and purpose in life. It is also my wishful desire that a man gifts this book to the woman in his life so she may embrace her power and expand her aura for the world to see. But beyond all my wishes, I truly hope and pray that it is a book that women give to themselves, so they may learn to tap into their immense beautiful aura of Kali. “Absolutely mind blowing” “A read for every woman” “An empowering book of feminine energy"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strand’s mystical poems to Ma Kali, the Dark Goddess of India, as occasioned by his encounters with the material dealt in depth in both Waking Up to the Dark and the Way of the Rose. “A treasure of mystical poetry, these poems pulsate with truth.” —Carolyn Myss, author of Intimate Conversations with the Divine and Anatomy of the Spirit In the early hours of June 16, 2011, Clark Strand witnessed a startling apparition of the Divine Feminine in the form of a young woman with an X of black electrical tape over Her mouth. Strand removed the tape, and She began to speak of a coming age of chaos and collapse in which the world of humankind would be severely chastened so that Her world—the world of Nature—could be renewed. Overwhelmed by the presence of One so fully Other, Strand found that love was the only language that would suffice. Drawing inspiration from Song of Songs and the Bengali mystics Ramprasad and Sri Ramakrishna, he began a series of poems to Ma Kali, the Dark Goddess of India, the words to which often came from the Great Mother Herself.

The volume's authors refer to such exemplary leaders as “beacons of Dharma,” highlighting the ways in which each figure, via their inspirational life work, provide us with illuminating perspectives as we continue to confront cases of grave injustice and needless suffering in the world. Taking on difficult contemporary issues such as climate change, racial and gender inequality, industrial agriculture and animal rights, fair access to healthcare and education, and other such pressing concerns, Beacons of Dharma offers a promising and much needed contribution to our global remedial discussions. Seeking to help solve and alleviate such social and environmental issues, each of the chapters in the volume invites contemplation, inspires action, and offers a freshly invigorating source of hope.

Book excerpt: This book is a study of religious ecstasy, and the ways that it has been suppressed in both the academic study of religion, and in much of the modern practice of religion. It examines the meanings of the term, how ecstatic experience is understood in a range of religions, and why the importance of religious and mystical ecstasy has declined in the modern West. June McDaniel examines how the search for ecstatic experience has migrated into such areas as war, terrorism, transgression, sexuality, drug use, and anti-institutional forms of spirituality. She argues that the loss of religious and mystical ecstasy, as both a religious goal and as a topic of academic study, has had wide-ranging negative effects. She also proposes that the field of religious studies must go beyond criminalizing, trivializing and pathologizing ecstatic and mystical experiences. Both religious studies and theology need to take these states seriously as important aspects of lived human experience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This vibrant collection presents 145 brief Bengali lyric poems dedicated to the Hindu goddesses Kali and Uma. These poems--many of which are presented here for the first time in English translation--were written from the early eighteenth century up to the contemporary period. They represent the unique Bengali tradition of goddess worship (Saktism) as it developed over this period. Included are forty poems by the most famous of all Sakta poets, Ramprasad Sen (c.1718-1775) and ten lyrics by the renowned 20th-century poet Kaji Najrul Islam. McDermott's lucid introduction places these works in their historical context and shows how images of the goddesses evolved over the centuries. Her lively translations of these poetic lyrics evoke the passion and devotion of the followers of Kali and Uma and shed light on the history and practice of goddess worship.
