Book excerpt: A fundamental theoretical study of homogeneous vectored injection and suction in high speed flows with heat transfer and self-induced gradients is described, based on local similarity solutions of the laminar boundary layer equations. The results show the important effects of both injection velocity and vector angle on a variety of physical properties of practical interest such as velocity and temperature profiles, skin friction, heat transfer rate, displacement thickness and induced pressure field. In addition, the existence of a new set of solutions pertaining to upstream-vectored injection is established and investigated. Moreover, it is shown that the frictional heating associated with the tangential injection velocity component can significantly influence the heat transfer characteristics of high speed flows. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shock wave-boundary-layer interaction (SBLI) is a fundamental phenomenon in gas dynamics that is observed in many practical situations, ranging from transonic aircraft wings to hypersonic vehicles and engines. SBLIs have the potential to pose serious problems in a flowfield; hence they often prove to be a critical - or even design limiting - issue for many aerospace applications. This is the first book devoted solely to a comprehensive, state-of-the-art explanation of this phenomenon. It includes a description of the basic fluid mechanics of SBLIs plus contributions from leading international experts who share their insight into their physics and the impact they have in practical flow situations. This book is for practitioners and graduate students in aerodynamics who wish to familiarize themselves with all aspects of SBLI flows. It is a valuable resource for specialists because it compiles experimental, computational and theoretical knowledge in one place.

Book excerpt: The first of these 2 studies examined the detailed structure of the hypersonic boundary layer over a large cone/flare configuration. Emphasis was on development and use of instrumentation with which to obtain flow field measurements of the mean and fluctuating properties of the attached and separated shear layers. Development and use of holographic interferometry and electron beam techniques in the high Mach number and Reynolds number environment developed in the shock tunnel are described. In the second study, detailed measurements of heat transfer, pressure and skin friction were made on a unique 'blowing and roughness' model constructed to simulate the aerothermal phenomena associated with a rough ablating maneuverable reentry vehicle. In the 2nd study emphasis was placed on development and use of unique heat transfer and skin friction instrumentation to obtain measurements of the combined effects of blowing and roughness and to understand how such effects influence boundary layer separation in regions of shock wave/boundary layer interaction. Each focused around providing information with which to construct and evaluate the modeling required in time-averaged Navier-Stokes equations to predict the structure of compressible hypersonic boundary layers in regions of strong pressure gradient, shock wave/boundary layer interaction and flow separation over smooth, rough and ablating surfaces. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work has been directed toward investigations of fundamental aerothermal phenomena in hypersonic flow, with particular emphasis on viscous/inviscid interaction phenomena. The experimental studies were conducted to examine the changes in the structure at the base of a hypersonic turbulent boundary layer as it is subjected to a strong self induced pressure gradient in regions of shock wave/boundary layer interaction. The initial phase of the theoretical program was directed toward summarizing existing techniques for obtaining Navier/Stokes solutions for laminar flow over flat plates in hypersonic flow. In the experimental program, surface and flow field measurements were made to examine the detailed flow mechanics associated with turbulent boundary layer separation over a large cone flare model at Mach 11, 13, and 16 for Reynold numbers up to 100 million. Solutions have been obtained to Navier-Stokes equations for the laminar flow over the leading edge of a sharp flat plate in Mach 16 flow for highly cooled wall conditions using a modified MacCormack/Shang fully explicit formulation. To obtain a stable converged solution it was necessary to reduce the grid size close to the leading edge to the order of the mean free path, and typically 20,000 time steps were required to achieve convergence. However, once obtained, the solution was a good agreement with experiment.

Book excerpt: Hypersonic Flow Theory presents the fundamentals of fluid mechanics, focusing on the hypersonic flow theory and approaches in theoretical aerodynamics. This book discusses the assumptions underlying hypersonic flow theory, unified supersonic-hypersonic similitude, two-dimensional and axisymmetric bodies, and circular cylinder. The constant-streamtube-area approximation, streamtube-continuity methods, and tangent-wedge and tangent-cone are also deliberated. This text likewise covers the similar laminar boundary layer solutions, bluntness induced interactions on slender bodies, and free molecule transfer theory. The dynamics of hypersonic flight or hypersonic wing theory, magnetohydrodynamic theory, or any developments involving treatment of the Boltzmann equation are not included. This publication is intended for hypersonic aerodynamicists, students, and researchers conducting work on the hypersonic flow phenomena.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third volume in a four-part series on Fluid Dynamics: PART 1: Classical Fluid Dynamics PART 2: Asymptotic Problems of Fluid Dynamics PART 3: Boundary Layers PART 4: Hydrodynamic Stability Theory The series is designed to give a comprehensive and coherent description of fluid dynamics, starting with chapters on classical theory suitable for an introductory undergraduate lecture course, and then progressing through more advanced material up to the level of modern research in the field. The notion of the boundary layer was introduced by Prandtl (1904) to describe thin viscous layers that form on a rigid body surface in high-Reynolds-number flows. Part 3 of this series begins with the classical theory of the boundary-layer flows, including the Blasius boundary layer on a flat plate and the Falkner-Skan solutions for the boundary layer on a wedge surface. However, the main focus is on recent results of the theory that have not been presented in texbooks before. These are based on the so-called "triple-deck theory" that have proved to be invaluable in describing various fluid-dynamic phenomena, including the boundary-layer separation from a rigid body surface.

Book excerpt: The symposium focused on departures from the classical boundary layer theories toward shock wave-boundary layer interactions with their attendant flow separation and reattachment and toward the three-dimensional viscous interactions of practical configurations. It thus dealt with one of the key problem areas associated with high speed supersonic aircraft, lifting-reentry vehicles, and potential hypersonic cruise vehicles. Such configurations are highly three-dimensional with complex flows involving strong viscous-inviscid interactions in regions of compression such as in air breathing engine inlets, at wing-body junctions, and over control surfaces. Book excerpt: The report describes a theoretical and experimental investigation of the properties of attached and separated regions of shock wave-laminar boundary layer interactions in the strong interaction regime. A study was made of the flow over a flat plate-wedge compression surface in the high Mach number, low Reynolds number regime where the interaction between the viscous and inviscid regions over the basic flat plate is 'strong' and of fundamental importance to the problem. The theoretical analysis described in the first part of the paper treats the development of the viscous layer and its interaction with the external inviscid stream, using an integral representation for the boundary layer equations. The analysis describes the strong interaction over the flat plate, the transition from a supercritical to a subcritical boundary layer upstream of the separation point, and the subsequent development of the viscous layer through to the end of the interaction. The theory was compared with experimental measurements in both strong and weak interaction regions of separated flow. The complementary experimental study described in the second part of the paper was designed to investigate the shock wave-boundary layer interaction on flat plate-wedge compression surfaces in the strong interaction regime.
