Book excerpt: Contraction flow of viscoelastic fluids has been a benchmark problem in non-Newtonian fluid mechanics because it mimics flows occurring in a number of industrial applications. It is also of considerable interest to academia to gain fundamental understanding of factors that affect the evolution of vortices and a complete understanding of the dynamics for a simple polymeric fluid has not been achieved. In this two part study we investigate the effect of pre deformation of a Boger fluid in a contraction geometry and the flow of surfactants in a parallel contraction geometry. Entry flow of a polymeric fluid results in the formation of upstream vortices, the presence of recirculation zones may lead to a nonuniform residence time and hence inferior quality products. In this work we study the effect of pre-stretching dilute flexible chain polymers by placing a cylinder in front of a contraction in a microfluidic device. This deformation applied to the polymer is remembered before it completely relaxes, this memory effect changes the rheological properties during the fading period of the deformation history. Applying pre-deformation gives rise to new type of vortex evolution that is different from the standard contraction case. Semi-dilute surfactant solutions that exhibit shear thickening nature can be potentially used in enhanced oil recovery to increase the sweep efficiency. Two parallel microfluidic contractions of different cross sectional area are used to investigate the rheological effect on the mass flux of the two channels. Shear thickening micellar solutions were found to increase the mass flux through the small channel compared to a newtonian fluid. This effect was observed only for a small range of flow rates. As flow rates increased inlet instabilities were observed that evolved into a chaotic behavior upon further increase in the net flow rate.

Book excerpt: Viscoelastic fluids are commonly used in many engineering applications such as in polymer processing industry, enhanced oil recovery and inkjet printing. Viscoelastic contraction flow represents the most common flow condition in those applications, but the flow is associated with its inherent problems such as additional pressure drops and flow instabilities. It is well known that formation of secondary flows at the upstream corners of the contraction greatly influences the fluidic behavior and promotes the flow instabilities. Therefore, investigating the flow conditions that induce the secondary flow has been an extensive research subject with the ultimate goal of elucidating the kinematics of viscoelastic contraction flows. Several relevant studies concluded that formation of secondary flow is influenced greatly by the elastic stress associated with the viscoelastic flow. Non-dimensional numbers that estimates the ratio of elastic stress to viscous (Wi and De numbers) or inertial (El number) stress has been used to quantify the effect of elasticity on the viscoelastic flow behavior. Even though a general consensus has been established that the higher elastic stress promoted the formation and enhancement of secondary flow, quite different flow behaviors were reported for the different fluids at the same level of elastic stress. Additionally, comparable secondary flows were also observed at different levels of elastic stresses. It should be noted that these non-dimensional numbers could not solely characterize the behavior of viscoelastic contraction flow. In this study, in addition to the role of elastic stress, the contribution of shear dependent rheology and extensional characteristics of the viscoelastic test fluids to the contraction fluidic behavior has been investigated experimentally. Wormlike micellar solutions (WMS) were chosen as the viscoelastic test fluids in virtue of their advantageous characteristics over polymer solutions and their growing applications. The shear and extensional rheology of the test fluids were characterized, and the velocity and shear deformation profiles associated with their contraction flow were quantitatively measured.

Book excerpt: We present a convergent and stable numerical algorithm to simulate unsteady incompressible viscoelastic flow in two dimensional complex geometry. The incompressible viscous momentum equation, coupled with the multiple mode Giesekus constitutive equation for viscoelastic stress, are used to model viscoelastic fluids in our problems. We recast the hyperbolic part of equations to a second order conservative finite difference method and leave the elliptic part as a source term to be computed by implicit methods. A second order Godunov method is introduced to compute edge-centered, time-centered primitive variables for calculating fluxes in a conservative finite difference equation, and then cell-centered conservative variables are updated using a hybrid flux divergence and source terms. The nonlinear stress source term in the elliptic part is computed separately by applying an operator splitting method with a new, stable, discretization. A projection method is used to enforce the velocity incompressibility constraint and to update pressure. Irregular computational domains are discretized with a Cartesian grid embedded boundary method. We demonstrate our numerical method by computing flow passing a sphere, flow in a well-rounded contraction channel, and in an abrupt contraction channel, with component Weissenberg numbers exceeding 300. The convergence rates of the solution error are second order in the L1 and L2 norms, and first order in the L[infinity] norm for velocity components in arbitrary smooth geometries. For stress components, this numerical algorithm showed second order convergence rate in the L1 norm, higher than first order in the L2 norm.

Book excerpt: Nonlinear dynamics of isothermal and non-isothermal flows of a viscoelastic fluid (PIB/PB/C14 polymer solution referred to as PIB Boger fluid) in an axisymmetric sudden contraction geometry (4:1) are studied. Such flows are of great importance in commercial polymer processes such as extrusion, injection molding, and fiber spinning, and also in polymer rheology using capillary rheometers. This problem serves as a benchmark problem for the numerical simulation of viscoelastic flows in complex geometries as well.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present a new algorithm to simulate unsteady viscoelastic flows in abrupt contraction channels. In our approach we split the viscoelastic terms of the Oldroyd-B constitutive equation using Duhamel's formula and discretize the resulting PDEs using a semi-implicit finite difference method based on a Lax-Wendroff method for hyperbolic terms. In particular, we leave a small residual elastic term in the viscous limit by design to make the hyperbolic piece well-posed. A projection method is used to impose the incompressibility constraint. We are able to compute the full range of elastic flows in an abrupt contraction channel--from the viscous limit to the elastic limit--in a stable and convergent manner for elastic Mach numbers less than one. We demonstrate the method for unsteady Oldroyd-B and Maxwell fluids in planar contraction channels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Viscoelasticity and Rheology covers the proceedings of a symposium by the same title, conducted by the Mathematics Research Center held at the University of Wisconsin-Madison on October 16-18, 1984. The contributions to the symposium are divided into four broad categories, namely, experimental results, constitutive theories, mathematical analysis, and computation. This 16-chapter work begins with experimental topics, including the motion of bubbles in viscoelastic fluids, wave propagation in viscoelastic solids, flows through contractions, and cold-drawing of polymers. The next chapters covering constitutive theories explore the molecular theories for polymer solutions and melts based on statistical mechanics, the use and limitations of approximate constitutive theories, a comparison of constitutive laws based on various molecular theories, network theories and some of their advantages in relation to experiments, and models for viscoplasticity. These topics are followed by discussions of the existence, regularity, and development of singularities, change of type, interface problems in viscoelasticity, existence for initial value problems and steady flows, and propagation and development of singularities. The remaining chapters deal with the numerical simulation of flow between eccentric cylinders, flow around spheres and bubbles, the hole pressure problem, and a review of computational problems related to various constitutive laws. This book will prove useful to chemical engineers, researchers, and students.

The method is based on second order accurate finite differences on composite overlapping grids, created with the grid generating program CMPGRD. Several numerical results are presented. We demonstrate viscoelastic instabilities in a channel flow with a cylinder. A study of a 2:1-contraction flow indicates why this geometry has been difficult to simulate. We also give an industrial example by computing a paper coating flow for a Giesekus fluid."

Book excerpt: Rheology is a component of Encyclopedia of Chemical Sciences, Engineering and Technology Resources in the global Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS), which is an integrated compendium of twenty Encyclopedias. Rheology is the study of the flow of matter. It is classified as a physics discipline and focuses on substances that do not maintain a constant viscosity or state of flow. That can involve liquids, soft solids and solids that are under conditions that cause them to flow. It applies to substances which have a complex molecular structure, such as muds, sludges, suspensions, polymers and other glass formers, as well as many foods and additives, bodily fluids and other biological materials. The theme on Rheology focuses on five main areas, namely, basic concepts of rheology; rheometry; rheological materials, rheological processes and theoretical rheology. Of course, many of the chapters contain material from more than one general area. Rheology is an interdisciplinary subject which embraces many aspects of mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering and biology. These two volumes are aimed at the following five major target audiences: University and College students Educators, Professional practitioners, Research personnel and Policy analysts, managers, and decision makers and NGOs.

Book excerpt: The behavior of polymer solutions in simple shear flows has been the subject of considerable research in the past. On the other hand, reports on polymers in elongational flow have appeared comparatively recently in the literature. Elongational flow with an inherent low vorticity is known to be more effective in extending polymer chains than simple shear flow and thus is more interesting from the point of view of basic (molecular chain dynamics at high deformation) and applied polymer science (rheology, fiber extrusion, drag reduction, flow through porous media). Undoubtly, one landmark in the field of polymer dynamics in elongational flow was the notion of critical strain-rate for chain extension, initially put forward by A. Peterlin (1966) and later refined into the "coil-stretching" transition by P. G. de Gennes and H. Hinch (1974). In the two decades which followed, significant progress in the understanding of chain conformation in "strong" flow has been accomplished through a combination of advances in instrumentation, computation techniques and theoretical studies. As a result of the multidisciplinary nature of the field, information on polymer chains in "strong" flow is accessible only from reviews and research papers scattered in disparate scientific journals. An important objective of this book is to remedy that situation by providing the reader with up-to-date knowledge in a single volume. The editors therefore invited leading specialists to provide both fundamental and applied information on the multiple facets of chain deformation in elongational flow.
