Book excerpt: Third installment in the loosely connected "Virgin" series. All novels standalone but reading them in order - VIRGIN ENCOUNTER followed by VIRGIN ESCAPADE - does enrich the romantic experience. A 19th century Gilded Age romance Vowing to remain a virgin in the interests of her ambitions, Phoebe Hall wants nothing to do with illicit passion or its tragic consequences. Her oath does not, however, protect her from Shield, a tough man who is every bit as driven to get ahead as Phoebe. Some might even call him ruthless in his quest to succeed. But Shield has a chink in his armor, and it's Phoebe. When she does him wrong, her attempt to make him restitution as his mistress brings out the dominant male in him. Driven by desires almost as dark as those belonging to Phoebe, he will do anything to protect her. From her own impulses. And from his, as well.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enchanted Objects investigates the relationship between visual art and contemporary fiction, addressing the problems that arise when paintings, deluxe books, porcelains, or statues are represented in contemporary novels. The distinction between objects and art objects depends on aesthetics. While some objects are authenticated through museum exhibits, others are hidden, broken, neglected, coveted, hoarded, or salvaged. Allan Hepburn asks four broad questions about aesthetics and value: What is a detail in visual art? Is all art ornamental? Does the value of an object increase because it is fragile? What defines ugliness? Contemporary novels, such as Tracy Chevalier's Girl with a Pearl Earring, Barry Unsworth's Stone Virgin, and Bruce Chatwin's Utz offer implicit answers to these questions while critiquing museums and the determination to invest objects with value through display. Addressing current debates in museum studies, cultural studies, art history, and literary criticism, Enchanted Objects develops an extensive theory of how contemporary literature engages with and relates to aesthetic objects.

Book excerpt: Since the dawn of history people have used charms and spells to try to control their environment, and forms of divination to try to foresee the otherwise unpredictable chances of life. Many of these techniques were called 'superstitious' by educated elites. For centuries religious believers used 'superstition' as a term of abuse to denounce another religion that they thought inferior, or to criticize their fellow-believers for practising their faith 'wrongly'. From the Middle Ages to the Enlightenment, scholars argued over what 'superstition' was, how to identify it, and how to persuade people to avoid it. Learned believers in demons and witchcraft, in their treatises and sermons, tried to make 'rational' sense of popular superstitions by blaming them on the deceptive tricks of seductive demons. Every major movement in Christian thought, from rival schools of medieval theology through to the Renaissance, the Reformation, and the Enlightenment, added new twists to the debates over superstition. Protestants saw Catholics as superstitious, and vice versa. Enlightened philosophers mocked traditional cults as superstitions. Eventually, the learned lost their worry about popular belief, and turned instead to chronicling and preserving 'superstitious' customs as folklore and ethnic heritage. Enchanted Europe is the first comprehensive, integrated account of western Europe's long, complex dialogue with its own folklore and popular beliefs. Drawing on many little-known and rarely used texts, Euan Cameron constructs a compelling narrative of the rise, diversification, and decline of popular 'superstition' in the European mind.

Book excerpt: Enchantment, as defined by bestselling business guru Guy Kawasaki, is not about manipulating people. It transforms situations and relationships. It converts hostility into civility and civility into affinity. It changes skeptics and cynics into believers and the undecided into the loyal. Enchantment can happen during a retail transaction, a high-level corporate negotiation, or a Facebook update. And when done right, it’s more powerful than traditional persuasion, influence, or marketing techniques. Kawasaki argues that in business and personal interactions, your goal is not merely to get what you want but to bring about a voluntary, enduring, and delightful change in other people. By enlisting their own goals and desires, by being likable and trustworthy, and by framing a cause that others can embrace, you can change hearts, minds, and actions.

Native speakers of Chontal, Zapotec, Mixtec, Chatino, and Huave arrive on foot, in taxis, and on trucks, to leave petitions and offerings at this place of answered prayers. Almost every town in coastal Oaxaca has its encanto, a physical space where a fissure leads to an unknown, metaphysical world. In the past, conquests and disasters led to the eradication of a few encantos. Today, development and emigration threaten these enchanted places. In rich, evocative text and brilliant photographs, The Edge of Enchantment addresses the history and culture of the Native people of Mexico's Huatulco region, those living in the area and others who have migrated north. This extraordinary book, the result of years of passionate research, intimately describes the land as the lifeline of these people and asks what transpires when their sovereignty is threatened.

Book excerpt: Medieval England during The Anarchy... After condemning her for practicing black magic, the superstitious folk in her village banish Melle to a lonely existence in the woodlands. But Melle is no witch! Rather she's the daughter of a learned alchemist and a gifted swordsmith in her own right, an occupation she keeps secret lest she become a political pawn in a battle of power between two evil rulers: the usurper General Raghiln on her side of the River Noir, and Lord Cahan, the overlord of Castle Weild, on the other. Melle's secret is threatened when cruel Lord Cahan abducts her, a brazen capture that sets into motion a shift in military might...and in them. For not only is the innocent virgin not what she seems, neither is her brutish captor. And so begins a war of wills between the real overlord of the land and a pretend witch who must choose sides...between two stubborn lovers hiding too many secrets...between a quelled dominant male and a wildly shameless submissive female...between a woman who gives her trust gladly and a man unwilling to trust even himself...between a staid royal who would rather believe in witchcraft than believe in love and an exuberant peasant literally bound to convince him otherwise.

Wren prefers a simple life of writing, reading, and volunteering at the orphanage to fashionable parties and balls at court. If she attends at all, it's because Hawke, the best friend she's secretly loved forever, convinces her. So when she learns his mother has arranged his marriage, she knows she must act. All she desires is a single night in Hawke's arms, so though she distrusts magic, Wren turns to a witch to create the perfect masquerade disguise infused in an enchanted bird. Lord Beza—Hawke, to his friends—is a notorious rake, but he can't stop thinking about the mysterious lady who seduced him at the summer masquerade then disappeared. Fortunately, she left behind a clue: a small enchanted bird. And his clever best friend Wren will surely help him in his search—after all, wouldn't she want him to find love? Never having dreamt Hawke would hunt for her, Wren is desperate to convince him to forget his "mysterious" lady—otherwise the enchanted bird will extract a growing price from them both. But their night of passion is impossible for either of them to forget... The Enchanted Bird is heartwarming, Regency-inspired fantasy romance at its finest, perfect for readers of the Jane Austen's Dragons series, Mary Robinette Kowal's Glamourist Histories series, and Grace Burrowes' Rogues to Riches series of historical romance novels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new second edition of Enchanted Evenings offers theater lovers an illuminating behind-the-scenes tour of some of America's best loved, most admired, and most enduring musicals. Readers will find such all-time favorites as Show Boat, Carousel, Kiss Me, Kate, Guys and Dolls, My Fair Lady, West Side Story, Sweeney Todd, Sunday in the Park with George, and Phantom of the Opera. Geoffrey Block provides a documentary history of each of the musicals, showing how each work took shape and revealing, at the same time, how the American musical evolved from the 1920s to today, both on stage and on screen. The book's particular focus is on the music, offering a wealth of detail about how librettist, lyricist, composer, and director work together to shape the piece. Block also includes trenchant social commentary and lively backstage anecdotes. Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, the Gershwins, Rodgers and Hart, Kurt Weill, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Lerner and Loewe, Frank Loesser, Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and other luminaries emerge as hardworking craftsmen under enormous pressure to sell tickets without compromising their dramatic vision. The second edition includes a greatly expanded chapter on Sondheim, a new chapter on Lloyd Webber, and two new chapters on the film adaptations of the main musicals featured in the text (including such hard to find films as the original 1936 version of Anything Goes and the 1959 film adaptation of Porgy and Bess). Packed with information, including a complete discography and plot synopses and song-by-song scenic outlines for each of the fourteen shows, Enchanted Evenings is an essential reference as well as a riveting history. "A solid and fascinating work that should become a model of how to investigate and report on the evolution of a musical. Block's research is persuasive and his writing vivid. . . Indispensable for anyone who cares to know more about Broadway musicals than Playbill can provide." --Steven Bach, The Los Angeles Times Book Review
