Book excerpt: Cette recherche qualitative visait à comprendre l'arrimage entre les inégalités de genre, la violence et la féminisation du virus de l'immunodéficience humaine et du syndrome de l'immunodéficience acquise [VIH/Sida] en Haïti. Des récits de vie (Bertaux, 2005) réalisés auprès de 13 femmes haïtiennes ont permis d'explorer en profondeur leurs expériences sexuelles. L'analyse de contenu obtenu dans le cadre d'entretiens individuels semi-dirigés, a révélé que les relations sexuelles étaient vécues comme des expériences d'agressions psychologiques et physiques. L'insoumission des femmes aux avances sexuelles de leur partenaire et leur exigence d'utiliser un préservatif déclenchaient une escalade de violence. Les femmes s'estimaient impuissantes et obligées de tolérer la violence lorsqu'elles cédaient aux désirs de leur partenaire. Le cas échéant, elles étaient violées. Les relations sexuelles conjugales empreintes de violence n'étaient pas protégées par un préservatif. Les victimes étaient tenues responsables des viols et des conséquences qui en découlaient. Les inégalités de genre ainsi que la violence et la pauvreté qui en résultent sont déterminantes de la vulnérabilité des femmes au VIH/Sida. Elles constituent des obstacles majeurs à la prévention de cette maladie. Les résultats de notre étude ont permis d'émettre des recommandations pour la recherche et les interventions en santé communautaire.

Intimate partner violence and sexual coercion are the most common forms of GBV, and these are the types of GBV that they analyze. GBV has serious consequences for women's health and well-being, ranging from fatal outcomes, such as homicide, suicide, and AIDS-related deaths, to nonfatal outcomes, such as physical injuries, chronic pain syndrome, gastrointestinal disorders, complications during pregnancy, miscarriage, and low birth-weight of children. GBV also poses significant costs for the economies of developing countries, including lower worker productivity and incomes, and lower rates of accumulation of human and social capital. The authors examine good practice approaches in justice, health, education, and multisectoral approaches. In each sector, they identify good practices for: (1) law and policies; (2) institutional reforms; (3) community-level interventions; and (4) individual behavior change strategies.
