It's March of 1963 in a quiet New Jersey shore community. Joseph Napolo is a young boy who cherishes his Pop Pop Carmine's Sunday visits to his parent's home. Joseph has come to understand that there is something special about his grandfather - the stories he tells, his friends that visit after dinner, how they kiss his ring and call him Don Carmine. This Sunday, however, Joseph is the sole witness to sinister and dramatic events. Young Joseph and his grandfather pledge to keep a dark secret. Over time, Joseph learns his grandfather had been the boss of a New York crime family - one that the media continues to illuminate as the most powerful Mafia organization in the country. Joseph has shunned his grandfather's ways but he will forever share the Family name. He understands that fame is fickle and fleeting. Infamy is not. Now Spring 2001, Joseph is a husband, father, and with his best friend, Michael Cogan, co-owner of a successful trucking company. However, trouble with the Teamsters Union, Cogan's gambling debts, and a hijacking that is more than it appears to be, create a scenario where the past and the present reconvene. During this one week in May, these ostensibly unconnected events toss together several nefarious entities. Teamster officials, a high-tech defense contractor, the Napolo Crime Family, and an ex-US intelligence operative collude and collide, taking Joseph on a wild ride, racing toward a Friday deadline. Reluctantly, Joseph must penetrate his grandfather's world to protect his own family and to save his friend, only to find himself a key player in a conspiracy that redefines patriotism and his grandfather's role in history. Book excerpt: The New York Times calls Barbara Rogan "a passionate writer whose prose is as vivid as lightning bolts." Now she delivers a mesmerizing tale of a long-hidden betrayal -- and its deadly repercussions. In the summer of 1972, on the night of their high school graduation, nine friends make a solemn vow to meet in twenty years' time. For Willa Scott, flanked by her best friend, Angel, and her boyfriend, Caleb, the future is a canvas to be painted in bold strokes and bright colors. But the ensuing decades bring change and separation. Willa becomes a biographer, and she drifts away from Caleb and Angel. Almost twenty years later, Willa, now mother of a teenage girl herself and recently widowed, looks up during a book signing and sees Patrick Mulhaven, the bad boy of Beacon High. He reminds her of their long-ago vow and persuades her to help track down their old group. It isn't long before Willa discovers that Angel's trail after high school is ice cold. It's as if she dropped off the face of the earth. Convinced that something has happened to her friend, Willa begins a search that takes her back through the looking glass. What she thought were the idyllic friendships of her youth are revealed as a tangled web of deception, betrayal, and life-shattering secrets. As the reunion weekend approaches, Willa is convinced that someone has killed -- and will kill again -- to keep Angel's whereabouts hidden forever. But when the people you know best are the people you know least, who can you trust? Barbara Rogan has proven herself a master of subtly evolving fear, and Hindsight delivers a spellbinding story about the powerful -- and sometimes murderous -- yearnings of the human heart.

Some readers will enjoy many of them, others may only locate one story of interest, but even if only one idea strikes a readers fancy, my job has been a success. When I was a younger pup, I devoured the fiction publications containing short stories from Ray Bradbury, Isaac Asimov, and Stephen King. Fiction with twisted endings, heroes transformed to villains, with every reader unsure of the outcome. There are no easy outcomes in the repertoires of these stellar authors. I do not claim to have these writers skills, savvy, or flair for drama, but I do believe there are periodic insights and surprises in the stories you will read here. If even one of you is entertained, then my job is accomplished. Enjoy the feast, as an author colleague of mine would say. Just be wary of where you left that turkey carving knife and the long-handledand sharpenedfork.

Book excerpt: This novel follows the unlikely, interconnected, misadventures of a couple of newspaper reporters, a truck driver, a runaway scientist, two missing children on the run, and a mysterious corrupt global enterprise headed by one individual. Imbedded in the plot is one more of the myriad of attempts to examine the age-old adage involving the two provincial schools of thought concerning the origin of life. The first, of life perhaps being the sum of infinite coincidences; the other, of it being the result of an intelligence. This book takes the position of the latter. In taking that position, the author declares the source of the intelligence is identified in scrolls stored in various places of antiquity in the Middle Eastern part of the world. These writings became the basis for our Judeo-Christian Bible. The Christian part of that Bible is identified as the New Testament, which is based on the birth, life, death, resurrection, and purpose of Jesus of Nazareth, who is declared as and who we believe is the Christ God sent to give His life for the salvation of mankind. The book attempts to use modern-day events as examples of Jesus’s response to the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well, in John 4, where He addresses the physicality of His Father when He said, “God is a Spirit.” The leaf that travels and is captured by a squirrel in the opening chapter is one of the author’s examples of how God uses what may appear to us as a coincidence to carry out His will. The ensemble of characters find their lives turned upside-down by a cutting-edge invention that has the power to upend the entire power structure of modern-day economics, closing the wealth gap and rewriting the dynamics of market control. Through it all, they will be challenged to see what is unseen and to be heroes in the truest sense of the word—that is, Good Samaritans. The novel ultimately makes a profound statement identifying what’s wrong with the human species through the voices of a visionary group and a wise American president. I hope you will enjoy, be uplifted, and maybe even be blessed by the read.

Book excerpt: Washington press insider Brian McGrory, whose debut novel, The Incumbent, soared onto the national bestseller lists amid rave reviews, is back with a second sizzling political thriller featuring Jack Flynn, the intrepid newspaperman with the wry turn of phrase. News is crackling all around him when Jack Flynn, ace reporter for The Boston Record, is summoned to a secret meeting with his esteemed publisher, Paul Ellis. Ellis sadly reveals that the newspaper they both love, owned by his family for more than a century, is the target of a hostile takeover bid by a shadowy corporate chain. Desperate, he asks for Jack's help. Already on the brink of a hot political scoop, Jack sets out in pursuit of a hidden truth. But that very day his life is threatened. The Record is beset by horrific tragedy. And a death from years ago no longer appears what it once seemed. Now Jack is forced to question not only the words published in his own paper but the relationships that have been the bedrock of his life -- in particular those with his gorgeous ex-girlfriend, who writes for a rival tabloid, and with the venerable Record reporter Robert Fitzgerald, Jack's longtime mentor. And all along, Jack is sitting on a goldmine of information that could torpedo the president's controversial nomination of the Massachusetts governor to be the next U.S. Attorney General. As he balances on a tightrope of personal and professional peril, shuttling from the swamps of central Florida to the corridors of Congress, then back to the alleyways of Boston, Jack is left with just two questions: Will his newspaper survive long enough for him to tell his story? Will he? Combining breakneck speed and tension-packed plotting with the insights of a consummate political insider, Brian McGrory explores the ethics and direction of modern journalism and analyzes how, in this era of media saturation, reputations are made and too often destroyed. The Nominee, peopled with irresistible characters that linger long after the last page is turned, confirms his position at the forefront of today's most talented young suspense writers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of various types of programming is essential for critical analysis of the media and also offers revealing perspectives on society's cultural values, preoccupations, behavior, and myths. This handbook provides a systematic, in-depth approach to the study of media genres - including reality programs, game shows, situation comedies, soap operas, film noir, news programs, and more. The author addresses such questions as: Have there been shifts in the formula of particular genres over time? What do these shifts reveal about changes in culture? How and why do new genres - such as reality TV shows - appear? Are there differences in genres from one country to another? Combining theoretical approaches with concrete examples, the book reinforces one's understanding of the importance of genre to the creation, evolution, and consumption of media content. Each chapter in this reader-friendly book contains a detailed discussion of one of the theoretical approaches to genre studies, followed by Lines of Inquiry, which summarizes the major points of the discussion and suggests directions for analysis and further study. Each chapter also includes an example that illustrates how the particular theoretical approach can be applied in the analysis of genre. The author's careful linkage of different genres to the real world makes the book widely useful for those interested in genre study as well as media and culture, television studies, film studies, and media literacy.
