Book Synopsis The Enlightened Joseph Priestley by : Robert E. Schofield
Download or read book The Enlightened Joseph Priestley written by Robert E. Schofield and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joseph Priestley (1733-1804) is one of the major figures of the English Enlightenment. A contemporary and friend of Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson, he exceeded even these polymaths in the breadth of his curiosity and learning. Yet no one has attempted an all-inclusive biography of Priestley, probably because he was simply too many persons for anyone easily to comprehend in a single study. Robert Schofield has devoted a lifetime of scholarship to this task. The result is a magisterial book, covering the life and works of Priestley during the critical first forty years of his life. Although Priestley is best known as a chemist, this book is considerably more than a study in the history of science. As any good biographer must, Schofield has thoroughly studied the many activities in which Priestley was engaged. Among them are theology, electricity, chemistry, politics, English grammar, rhetoric, and educational philosophy. Schofield situates Priestley, the provincial dissenter, within the social, political, and intellectual contexts of his day and examines all the works Priestley wrote and published during this period. Schofield singles out the first forty years of Priestley's life because these were the years of preparation and trial during which Priestley qualified for the achievements that were to make him famous. The discovery of oxygen, the defenses of Unitarianism, and the political liberalism that characterize the mature Priestley - all are foreshadowed in the young Priestley. A brief epilogue looks ahead to the next thirty years when Priestley was forced out of England and settled in Pennsylvania, the subject of Schofield's next book. But this volume stands alone as thedefinitive study of the making of Joseph Priestley.
Book Synopsis Thomas Paine and the French Revolution by : Carine Lounissi
Download or read book Thomas Paine and the French Revolution written by Carine Lounissi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-12 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores Thomas Paine's French decade, from the publication of the first part of Rights of Man in the spring of 1791 to his return trip to the United States in the fall of 1802. It examines Paine's multifarious activities during this period as a thinker, writer, member of the French Convention, lobbyist, adviser to French governments, officious diplomat and propagandist. Using previously neglected sources and archival material, Carine Lounissi demonstrates both how his republicanism was challenged, bolstered and altered by this French experience, and how his positions at key moments of the history of the French experiment forced major participants in the Revolution to defend or question the kind of regime or of republic they wished to set up. As a member of the Lafayette circle when writing the manuscript of Rights of Man, of the Girondin constellation in the Convention, one of the few democrats who defended universal suffrage after Thermidor, and as a member of the Constitutional Circle which promoted a kind of republic which did not match his ideas, Paine baffled his contemporaries and still puzzles the present-day scholar. This book intends to offer a new perspective on Paine, and on how this major agent of revolutions contributed to the debate on the French Revolution both in France and outside France.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vindiciae Priestleianae: An Address to the Students of Oxford and Cambridge; Occasioned by a Letter to Dr. Priestley From a Person Calling Himself an Undergraduate, but Publicly and Uncontradictedly Ascribed to Dr. Horne, Dean of Canterbury, and President of Magdalen College, Oxf The idea of drawing up the following tract first arose from observing a studied affectation in many persons of treating Dr. Priestley's theological and metaphysical writings with flight and contempt, and an endeavour in others particularly to infuse the like sentiments of him into the riling generation: which last I could not but look upon as of pernicious consequence, tending to prevent their acquaintance with a writer, from whose various works, above those of any other in our own country, they might reap the greatest advantage both in respect of useful knowlege and virtuous improvement. Book excerpt: In The Nation, the Law, and the King, Reform Politics in England, author Jenny Graham argues that the English reform movement from 1789-1799 was motivated by a distinctively revolutionary ethos that was largely responsible for the extreme reaction of the governing classes. Graham fully explores the role of the middle class radicals to support her assertion that the revolution was pro-French for far longer than many other historians are prepared to admit. This study aims to correct the overall picture often painted by most historians regarding the temperament of the movement. Based upon a wealth of evidence, much heretofore ignored, this two-volume masterpiece is a treasure for European, British, French, and Colonial historians and students
