Book Synopsis Dissident Friendships by : Elora Chowdhury
Download or read book Dissident Friendships written by Elora Chowdhury and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2016-09-08 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Often perceived as unbridgeable, the boundaries that divide humanity from itself--whether national, gender, racial, political, or imperial--are rearticulated through friendship. Elora Halim Chowdhury and Liz Philipose edit a collection of essays that express the different ways women forge hospitality in deference to or defiance of the structures meant to keep them apart. Emerging out of postcolonial theory, the works discuss instances when the authors have negotiated friendship's complicated, conflicted, and contradictory terrain; offer fresh perspectives on feminists' invested, reluctant, and selective uses of the nation; reflect on how the arts contribute to conversations about feminism, dissent, resistance, and solidarity; and unpack the details of transnational dissident friendships. Contributors: Lori E. Amy, Azza Basarudin, Himika Bhattacharya, Kabita Chakma, Elora Halim Chowdhury, Laurie R. Cohen, Esha Niyogi De, Eglantina Gjermeni, Glen Hill, Alka Kurian, Meredith Madden, Angie Mejia, Chandra T. Mohanty, A. Wendy Nastasi, Nicole Nguyen, Liz Philipose, Anya Stanger, Shreerekha Subramanian, and Yuanfang Dai.

Book Synopsis Advances in Chitin/Chitosan Characterization and Applications by : Marguerite Rinaudo
Download or read book Advances in Chitin/Chitosan Characterization and Applications written by Marguerite Rinaudo and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-04-23 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Functional advanced biopolymers have received far less attention than renewable biomass (cellulose, rubber, etc.) used for energy production. Among the most advanced biopolymers known is chitosan. The term chitosan refers to a family of polysaccharides obtained by partial de-N-acetylation from chitin, one of the most abundant renewable resources in the biosphere. Chitosan has been firmly established as having unique material properties as well as biological activities. Either in its native form or as a chemical derivative, chitosan is amenable to being processed—typically under mild conditions—into soft materials such as hydrogels, colloidal nanoparticles, or nanofibers. Given its multiple biological properties, including biodegradability, antimicrobial effects, gene transfectability, and metal adsorption—to name but a few—chitosan is regarded as a widely versatile building block in various sectors (e.g., agriculture, food, cosmetics, pharmacy) and for various applications (medical devices, metal adsorption, catalysis, etc.). This Special Issue presents an updated account addressing some of the major applications, including also chemical and enzymatic modifications of oligos and polymers. A better understanding of the properties that underpin the use of chitin and chitosan in different fields is key for boosting their more extensive industrial utilization, as well as to aid regulatory agencies in establishing specifications, guidelines, and standards for the different types of products and applications.
Book Synopsis Inclusive Governance in South Asia by : Nizam Ahmed
Download or read book Inclusive Governance in South Asia written by Nizam Ahmed and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-04 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume explores the state of inclusive governance in South Asia. It particularly examines the nature and scope of inclusiveness noticed in the parliament and civil service in Bangladesh, India, and Nepal, and the judiciary in Bangladesh. Where previous literature has stressed the need for the inclusion of external stakeholders, this volume highlights the importance of the involvement of internal stakeholders. This includes ‘insiders’ such as opposition members and government backbenchers in parliament and specialists in the civil service. The main emphasis is on identifying the extent to which insiders in different institutions have the scope to participate in the governing process. Furthermore, this volume also seeks to assess the implications of inclusiveness/exclusiveness for democratic governance. By exploring the link between inclusiveness and accountability, its contributors are able to draw out the strengths and weaknesses of the existing mechanisms of accountability, particularly social accountability. This innovative collection will appeal to students and scholars of gender and development studies, public policy and administration, international relations, law and political science.

Book Synopsis Adhesives for Wood and Lignocellulosic Materials by : R. N. Kumar
Download or read book Adhesives for Wood and Lignocellulosic Materials written by R. N. Kumar and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2019-07-16 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique and ground-breaking book from two leading specialists on adhesion and adhesives for wood and lignocellulosic materials The book is a comprehensive treatment covering a wide range of subjects uniquely available in a single source for the first time. A material science approach has been adopted in dealing with wood adhesion and adhesives. The approach of the authors is to bring out hierarchical cellular and porous characteristics of wood with polymeric cell wall structure, along with the associated non-cell wall extractives, which greatly influence the interaction of wood substrate with polymeric adhesives in a very unique manner not existent in the case of other adherends. Environmental aspects, in particular formaldehyde emission from adhesive bonded wood products, has been included. A significant feature of the book is the inclusion of polymeric matrix materials for wood polymer composites.
Book Synopsis Orthotic Intervention for the Hand and Upper Extremity by : MaryLynn A. Jacobs
Download or read book Orthotic Intervention for the Hand and Upper Extremity written by MaryLynn A. Jacobs and published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. This book was released on 2013-11-18 with total page 681 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Entry-level occupational therapists are expected to have fundamental skills in splinting theory, design, and fabrication. As occupational therapy students, they gain these skills through didactic courses, fieldwork, or observations. Orthotic Intervention of the Hand and Upper Extremity: Splinting Principles and Process, Second Edition, delivers just that. Instructors need materials to teach students how to apply theory to practice in the area of splinting. This book provides instructors with the pedagogical framework necessary to help students, inexperienced therapists, and expert hand therapists make the right decision whether to fabricate a thermoplastic or neoprene splint, cast, tape, or choose an over-the-counter splint for their patient. This detailed and easy-to-use reference demonstrates splint fabrication techniques and related interventions for the upper extremity and highlights anatomical and biomechanical principles specifically related to splints"--Provided by publisher.
