Book excerpt: "The growth and development of suburban Edinburgh in the early part of the twentieth century has resulted in many small communities being lost to progress. Nevertheless, several old villages have refused to be engulfed by the city and have retained their character and independence to a surprising degree despite the growth of the city around them. Malcolm Cant traces the history of Edinburgh's villages from their origins to the present day in a lively and informative text illustrated by many photographs and drawings, both new and old. This first volume deals with the northern part of the city and a second volume will cover the southern half"--Back cover.

Download or read book Glasgow written by Michael Pacione and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-04-14 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1995, this book employs a historical-geographical approach to illuminate the interaction between the multifarious social and spatial forces which have conditioned the processes and patterns of urban growth and change over time in Scotland’s principle city. The book is organised into two complementary parts. In the first part, a chronological approach is adopted to examine the main agents, processes and patterns underlying the development of the city from its pre-urban origins until the close of the nineteenth century. In the second part, the major issues relating to the socio-spatial development of Glasgow in the twentieth century are the subject of systematic examination. The book uses the geographical approach to synthesise relevant information from a plethora of sources to illuminate the changing geography of the city in a multi-perspective format. This volume will assist those who are interested to understand the geography of Scotland’s principle city, and is an ideal book for students and researchers of urban studies, geography, social science and Scottish studies. It provides a fascinating insight into the structure of a vibrant, dynamic and often misunderstood city.

Download or read book Epidemics written by Samuel K. Cohn Jr. and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By investigating thousands of descriptions of epidemics reaching back before the fifth-century-BCE Plague of Athens to the distrust and violence that erupted with Ebola in 2014, Epidemics challenges a dominant hypothesis in the study of epidemics, that invariably across time and space, epidemics provoked hatred, blaming of the 'other', and victimizing bearers of epidemic diseases, particularly when diseases were mysterious, without known cures or preventive measures, as with AIDS during the last two decades of the twentieth century. However, scholars and public intellectuals, especially post-AIDS, have missed a fundamental aspect of the history of epidemics. Instead of sparking hatred and blame, this study traces epidemics' socio-psychological consequences across time and discovers a radically different picture: that epidemic diseases have more often unified societies across class, race, ethnicity, and religion, spurring self-sacrifice and compassion.
