Until now, descriptive studies of village life have been virtually nonexistent except in the Dutch language. This collection of comprehensive surveys of thirteen villages in Indonesia provides the first major study of this fundamental level of Indonesian society in the post-colonial period. The studies are based on first-hand field experience by outstanding Indonesian, Dutch, and American scholars. The villages included are representative of the variety of social, political, economic, and religious systems in the major island regions: Sumatra, Java, Bali, Sumbawa, Timor, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Ambon, and West Irian. Most of the contributors are anthropologists, but a sociologist, an agronomist, and an authority on adat law are also represented. Although the articles reflect the particular interests of the individual authors, certain general anthropological topics - such as demography, settlement patterns, subsistence economy, land tenure, and social and political structures - are covered in each to allow for comparisons among the studies. The editor has added a history of Indonesian village studies, and in a concluding chapter he makes general observations about village life in Indonesia. In addition to illustrating the range of Indonesia's ethnic diversity, these village surveys provide greater understanding of the social phenomena and processes that form a basic part of contemporary life in a rapidly changing country. KOENTJARANINGRAT (1923-1999) was a professor and head of the Department of Anthropology at the University of Indonesia. He was the author of numerous scholarly books and articles in both the Indonesian and English languages.

Ann Dunham, was an economic anthropologist and rural development consultant who worked in several countries including Indonesia. Dunham received her doctorate in 1992. She died in 1995, at the age of 52, before having the opportunity to revise her dissertation for publication, as she had planned. Dunham’s dissertation adviser Alice G. Dewey and her fellow graduate student Nancy I. Cooper undertook the revisions at the request of Dunham’s daughter, Maya Soetoro-Ng. The result is Surviving against the Odds, a book based on Dunham’s research over a period of fourteen years among the rural metalworkers of Java, the island home to nearly half Indonesia’s population. Surviving against the Odds reflects Dunham’s commitment to helping small-scale village industries survive; her pragmatic, non-ideological approach to research and problem solving; and her impressive command of history, economic data, and development policy. Along with photographs of Dunham, the book includes many pictures taken by her in Indonesia. After Dunham married Lolo Soetoro in 1967, she and her six-year-old son, Barack Obama, moved from Hawai‘i to Soetoro’s home in Jakarta, where Maya Soetoro was born three years later. Barack returned to Hawai‘i to attend school in 1971. Dedicated to Dunham’s mother Madelyn, her adviser Alice, and “Barack and Maya, who seldom complained when their mother was in the field,” Surviving against the Odds centers on the metalworking industries in the Javanese village of Kajar. Focusing attention on the small rural industries overlooked by many scholars, Dunham argued that wet-rice cultivation was not the only viable economic activity in rural Southeast Asia. Surviving against the Odds includes a preface by the editors, Alice G. Dewey and Nancy I. Cooper, and a foreword by her daughter Maya Soetoro-Ng, each of which discusses Dunham and her career. In his afterword, the anthropologist and Indonesianist Robert W. Hefner explores the content of Surviving against the Odds, its relation to anthropology when it was researched and written, and its continuing relevance today.

This book tells the story of Indonesia’s efforts to change the trajectory of development for poor children. Many countries have similar aims, but several aspects of what is reported here are especially valuable and perhaps unique. The study offers data on all aspects of health and development in a sample of rural young children, collected with internationally-validated measures, as well as household information, information about parenting practices including feeding patterns, parent questionnaires, and data on the prevalence and distribution of ECED services. The data reported in this book is based on a sample of more than 6,000 Indonesian children living in 310 poor villages, including two age cohorts (aged 1 and 4 years old when data were first collected on their development in 2009). From the start, the project aimed not only to support service provision but also to support the development of national standards, build national and district capacity, and encourage the establishment of a system of ECED quality assurance, efforts that are still in process. Few such analyses have been done with such a large sample and with multiple measures. These design features allow a high level of confidence in the results that are reported. The lessons from this book will help to inform not only this project’s further implementation but ECED initiatives in Indonesia and around the world. Thus, the results presented in this book are of significance for researchers, policy-makers, and practitioners within and beyond Indonesia. New studies on local politics, ethnicity, the democratic transition, corruption, Islam, popular culture, and other areas hint at novel concepts of the state, though often without fully articulating them. This book captures several dimensions of this shift. One reason for the new thinking is a fresh wind that has altered state studies generally. People are posing new kinds of questions about the state and developing new methodologies to answer them. Another reason for this shift is that Indonesia itself has changed, probably more than most people recognize. It looks more democratic, but also more chaotic and corrupt, than it did during the militaristic New Order of 1966–1998. State of Authority offers a range of detailed case studies based on fieldwork in many different settings around the archipelago. The studies bring to life figures of authority who have sought to carve out positions of power for themselves using legal and illegal means. These figures include village heads, informal slum leaders, district heads, parliamentarians, and others. These individuals negotiate in settings where the state is evident and where it is discussed: coffee houses, hotel lounges, fishing waters, and street-side stalls. These case studies, and the broader trend in scholarship of which they are a part, allow for a new theorization of the state in Indonesia that more adequately addresses the complexity of political life in this vast archipelago nation. State of Authority demonstrates that the state of Indonesia is not monolithic, but is constituted from the ground up by a host of local negotiations and symbolic practices.

As the title of the book, namely "INDONESIA'S STRATEGIC ROLE IN THE G20 ACCORDING TO THE VIEWS OF EXPERTS" this book discusses in detail how Indonesia's strategic role in each of the issues in the sherpa track and financial track. This book raises several issues in the Sherpa Track such as agriculture and food security, energy transition, environmental and climate sustainability, and development issues such as inequality, gender, digital economy, trade, and investment. In addition, there are issues in the Financial Track that are written in this book, namely the issue of debt challenges in countries, especially developing countries, cyber risk, financial inclusion and scarring effects, and exit strategies to recover and recover from the Covid-19 pandemic. This book is the result of a real contribution of economists' ideas on various topics, especially the Indonesian economy, and was prepared in preparation for the G-20 Summit to be held in Bali in November. Even developing countries are expected to suffer more injuries than countries with advanced economies. More serious efforts are needed to support inclusive, fair, and sustainable growth. The policy choices of developed countries to restore the domestic economy created new worries for the world. This is because developing countries have a limited ability to provide policy support which is the factor behind the relatively slower recovery compared to developed countries. Pandemic recovery is proceeding unevenly in each country requiring a different exit strategy, depending on the economic structure, quality of available resources, and governance in making supportive policies. It is very important for all countries to understand the problems facing the world and each country's policy choices for exiting and recovering from a pandemic, not just G20 members. Therefore, Indonesia's presidency at the G20 Summit in 2022 is crucial in overcoming this problem, because the G20 countries with the world's largest economic power must be the prime mover to help developing countries both get out of the pandemic crisis trap and face uncertainty due to various social, economic problems. and politics. The main agenda of the G20 meeting is to encourage cooperation to create an inclusive, strong and sustainable world economic governance. Several agendas that can be agreed on globally such as climate change and green economy, transformation towards digitalization of the economy, global food security and precautionary recovery policies so as not to add to global problems. There must be an understanding from all G20 members that there are problems and solutions that are unique in nature because of the different social, political, economic strengths and challenges in each country. Actually, the concept of green economy is not a new concept. However, recently the world has only recently realized the importance of transforming the global economic approach so that it becomes sustainable. The G20 Forum is a kind of declarator again to encourage the implementation of this concept at the global level. Moreover, G20 countries contribute 80 percent of global carbon emissions and therefore G20 countries must show their seriousness to reduce global carbon by implementing various policies that support carbon reduction efforts. In addition, digital transformation is also a priority agenda in the G20 forum. The Covid-19 pandemic, which has escalated the acceleration of digital transformation, has encouraged the adoption of digital technology by economic actors. During the pandemic, technology has opened up space for online marketplaces and services that are increasingly needed. Even digital businesses run by women entrepreneurs in all developing G20 countries have significantly expanded during the COVID-19 pandemic. The digital-based economy continues to grow and is believed to be one of the drivers of future economic growth despite being faced with various challenges. Even in the issue of world trade, Indonesia needs to voice the importance of reviewing the direction and management of world trade after the Covid-19 pandemic in the G20 forum. The G20 countries need to support a balance between the conventional principles of open trade and the needs of each country to achieve a stronger and more sustainable long-term economic recovery. There are still many other roles for Indonesia in voicing various issues at the G20 forum, so what is Indonesia's other role in promoting an inclusive and collaborative post-pandemic economic recovery for G20 countries and others?

Book excerpt: The Republic of Indonesia, home to over 240 million people, is the world's fourth most populous nation. Ethnically, culturally, and economically diverse, the Indonesian people are broadly dispersed across an archipelago of more than 13,000 islands. Rapid urbanization has given rise to one megacity (Jakarta) and to 10 other major metropolitan areas. And yet about half of Indonesians make their homes in rural areas of the country. Indonesia, a signatory to the United Nations Millennium Declaration, has committed to achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). However, recent estimates suggest that Indonesia will not achieve by the target date of 2015 MDG 4 - reduction by two-thirds of the 1990 under - 5 infant mortality rate (number of children under age 5 who die per 1,000 live births) - and MDG 5 - reduction by three-quarters of the 1990 maternal mortality ratio (number of maternal deaths within 28 days of childbirth in a given year per 100,000 live births). Although much has been achieved, complex and indeed difficult challenges will have to be overcome before maternal and infant mortality are brought into the MDG-prescribed range. Reducing Maternal and Neonatal Mortality in Indonesia is a joint study by the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and the Indonesian Academy of Sciences that evaluates the quality and consistency of the existing data on maternal and neonatal mortality; devises a strategy to achieve the Millennium Development Goals related to maternal mortality, fetal mortality (stillbirths), and neonatal mortality; and identifies the highest priority interventions and proposes steps toward development of an effective implementation plan. According to the UN Human Development Index (HDI), in 2012 Indonesia ranked 121st out of 185 countries in human development. However, over the last 20 years the rate of improvement in Indonesia\'s HDI ranking has exceeded the world average. This progress may be attributable in part to the fact that Indonesia has put considerable effort into meeting the MDGs. This report is intended to be a contribution toward achieving the Millennium Development Goals.
