Book Synopsis The Village of Lansing and its airport: Past, Present, Future by : Robert R. Malkas
Download or read book The Village of Lansing and its airport: Past, Present, Future written by Robert R. Malkas and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2023-05-10 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book The Village of Lansing and Its Airport is a history of how the Lansing Airport was developed into what it is today. This story looks at the fascinating and often underappreciated ways that it served the people of the Village of Lansing and the entire Chicago Southland. While the book tells the history of events in the airport’s development, it also provides a guided virtual tour through the pages of history and gives the reader an opportunity to participate as if they were actually reliving the experiences. The book is designed to revitalize the planned development of the airport in a format not typical of a historical memoir. About the Author Robert R. Malkas currently resides in Lansing, Illinois. When he first moved there, he went to sleep every night under the first ever airport rotating beacon atop Henry Ford’s Hangar at the Chicago Hammond airport. He came to believe he was being sent a message from Henry Ford himself about his contributions to the history of aviation in the United States. Malkas accepted this challenge and became the first chairman of a village commission assigned the task of managing the Lansing Airport’s growth. He was later appointed airport manager and served in that position for twenty-three years until his retirement in 2008.
Book Synopsis Lansing at the Crossroads by : Rita Smidt
Download or read book Lansing at the Crossroads written by Rita Smidt and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2001 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The construction of a new four-lane highway on the outskirts of Ithaca, NY created a rapidly growing commercial center in the previously rural Town of Lansing. The clash between the newcomers and the old-timers over the direction and pace of this change led to the formation of a new local government and the incorporation of the Village of Lansing. This is the story of that village, how and why it was formed, the problems it faced in its early years, and the victories its people won in gaining control of their own communal future. It is also a story that mirrors, on a small scale, significant national trends: urban sprawl, spreading sub urbanization, the popular reaction against the disappearance of America's open lands and the mounting costs of extending the urban infrastructure, and the turning away from centralization to local control as the preferred means of solving public problems.
Book Synopsis Taking Sustainable Cities Seriously by : Kent E. Portney
Download or read book Taking Sustainable Cities Seriously written by Kent E. Portney and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2002-11-22 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today at least twenty-five major U.S. cities have pursued some form of sustainability initiative. Although many case studies and "how-to" manuals have been published, there has been little systematic comparison of these cities' programs and initiatives. In this book Kent Portney lays the theoretical groundwork for research on what works and what does not, and why. Distinguishing cities on the basis of population characteristics and region for his analysis, Portney shows how cities use the broad rubric of sustainability to achieve particular political ends. Cities that take sustainability seriously, such as Portland, San Francisco, and Seattle, use broad definitions that go well beyond concern for the physical environment or creating jobs. They pursue sustainability at many levels and integrate concern for economic development, the environment, and quality of life across all activities of city government. Cities that take sustainability less seriously, such as Cleveland, Boston, and Orlando, confine it to such issues as solid waste disposal, brownfields, redevelopment, and neighborhood beautification. Still other cities, such as New Haven, Brownsville, and Milwaukee, do considerably less to work toward sustainability. Portney begins by reviewing the conceptual underpinnings of sustainable development and sustainable communities. The comparisons that follow provide a foundation for assessing the range of what is possible and desirable for sustainability initiatives. In the book's conclusion, Portney assesses the extent to which cities can use the pursuit of sustainability either to foster change in public values or merely to reinforce values that are already reflected in systems of governance.
