Book excerpt: Part memoir and part travelogue, this book adds its own distinctive voice to the chorus of writers of Modern Greek living in the Greek-American diaspora. This unique voice belongs to a tall, blond American woman, a professor of aerospace engineering at the University of California, who met her future Greek-born and raised husband-to-be when she was still a graduate student. This book tells the story of her "journey" toward understanding Greece and its people, and more importantly, how she "became" a Greek woman... at least in spirit. It is a story of her coming to terms with her role as Greek wife and mother, observer and ponderer. The author uses her precise eye for detail and her crystalline memory in the service of her goal. She listens carefully to her husband's family stories to make them her own. She watches her lovable mother-in-law Elpida, to learn how she cooks and how she lives. She observes the differences in customs between Americans and Greeks and vividly illustrates them in her amusing vignettes. This is a book that you read with all of your senses. Its freshness in style allows you to taste, smell, feel, hear and see the written accounts of family, friends, lore and nature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Vignettes: A Sail in the Greek Seas, Summer of 1877 This little book is a record of a few weeks' travel in Greece last summer. It does not make the least claim to thoroughness; no deep questions of archæology are discussed; only the vivid impressions of the moment are given; and the task of discussing the moral and political regeneration of the modern Greeks is left to more elaborate investigators. The journey was a delightful succession of pictorial surprises; the landscape and the externalities of Greece could alone be noted, and there was no time for discussing Greek parliamentary reform, the subtler aspects of Greek character, or the inner and profounder life of this interesting people. The indulgence of the kindly reader is therefore asked for the many (doubtless) hasty judgments of these pages, the sudden transitions from subject to subject, the use of the present tense, and the constant recurrence of I. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Greek Stories Of the writers whose stories have been selected for this volume of translations, Polylas, Bizyenos, and Papadiamantes are dead; all the others are living. Without exception, they have cultivated other forms of literary expression beside the short story. Most of them are leading figures in the literary world of Modern Greece. It is worthy of note that the writers of the Sin of My Mother and of The Frightened Soul come from Thrace, the original home of the cult of Dionysus and of the Drama, which after almost five hundred years of Turkish misrule is to return to Greece again. Chrono logically, Polylas' Forgiveness is the oldest story in the collection; the most recent is The Frightened Soul, which appeared in the pages of a Greek magazine in Constantinople, started after the occupation of the city by the Allies in 1918. Here you will hear the birds singing and children laughing, all day long. The trees are full of blossoms and fruit. The sky is always blue, the grass green and soft. Under the trees dwell the fairies, and against the blue sky you will sometimes see the sheen of angels’ wings as the flit by. It is from this place that these children’s stories originate. This book was released on 2019-01-22 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with historical consciousness and its artistic expressions in contemporary Greece since 1989 from the point of view that contemporary Greeks have been faced with the contradictions between on the one hand a glorious, world-famous yet distant past and, on the other, a traumatic contemporary history of wars, expulsions, civil strife and political and economic crises. Such clashes of imaginary identifications and collective traumas call for interpretations not only from historians but also from artists and storytellers. Therefore, the chapters in this volume explore the ways in which sensitive and creative perspectives of art approach and appropriate history in Greece. Through a rich collection of analytical case studies and creative reflections on Greece’s past, present, and future this volume presents the reader with the ways a set of contemporary Greek storytellers in different genres have incorporated previously under-explored or little-known themes, events, and epochs in modern Greek history showing how the past, by being interpreted and represented in the present, can teach us a lot about contemporary Greek society. The themes that form the point of departure for the stories told or retold cover various significant components of Greek history and culture such as ancient myths, the Ottoman period, the Greek War of Independence and the Greek Civil War, but also less prominent or known aspects of Greek history such as the Greek Enlightenment, the long and tragic history of Greek Jewry, and migration to and from Greece.

Book excerpt: Every Greek and every friend of the country knows the date 1821, when the banner of revolution was raised against the empire of the Ottoman Turks, and the story of 'Modern Greece' is usually said to begin. Less well known, but of even greater importance, was the international recognition given to Greece as an independent state with full sovereign rights, as early as 1830. This places Greece in the vanguard among the new nation-states of Europe whose emergence would gather momentum through to the early twentieth century, a process whose repercussions continue to this day. Starting out from that perspective, which has been all but ignored until now, this book brings together the work of scholars from a variety of disciplines to explore the contribution of characteristically nineteenth-century European modes of thought to the 'making' of Greece as a modern nation. Closely linked to nationalism is romanticism, which exercised a formative role through imaginative literature, as is demonstrated in several chapters on poetry and fiction. Under the broad heading 'uses of the past', other chapters consider ways in which the legacies, first of ancient Greece, then later of Byzantium, came to be mobilized in the construction of a durable national identity at once 'Greek' and 'modern'. The Making of Modern Greece aims to situate the Greek experience, as never before, within the broad context of current theoretical and historical thinking about nations and nationalism in the modern world. The book spans the period from 1797, when Rigas Velestinlis published a constitution for an imaginary 'Hellenic Republic', at the cost of his life, to the establishment of the modern Olympic Games, in Athens in 1896, an occasion which sealed with international approval the hard-won self-image of 'Modern Greece' as it had become established over the previous century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Greece's economic troubles began to threaten the stability of the European Union in 2010, the nation found itself in the center of a whirlwind of international finger-pointing. In the years prior, Greece appeared to be politically secure and economically healthy. Upon its emergence in the center of the European economic maelstrom, however, observers and critics cited a century of economic hurdles, dictatorships, revolutions, and more reasons as to why their current crisis was understandable, if not predictable. The ancient birthplace of democracy and countless artistic, literary, philosophical, and scientific developments had struggled to catch-up to its economically-thriving neighbors in Western Europe for years and quickly became the most seriously economically-troubled European country following a fiscal nosedive beginning in 2008. When the deficit and unemployment skyrocketed, the resulting austerity measures triggered widespread social unrest. The entire world turned its focus toward the troubled nation, waiting for the possibility of a Greek exit from the European Monetary Union and its potential to unravel the entire Union, with other weaker members heading for the exit as well. The effects of Greece's crisis are also tied up in the global arguments about austerity, with many viewing it as necessary medicine, and still others seeing austerity as an intellectually bankrupt approach to fiscal policy that only further damages weak economies. In Modern Greece: What Everyone Needs to Know®, Stathis Kalyvas, an eminent scholar of conflict, Europe, and Greece combines the most up-to-date economic and political-science findings on the current Greek crisis with a discussion of Greece's history. Tracing the nation's development from the early nineteenth century to the present, the informative question-and answer format covers key episodes including the independence movement of the early nineteenth century, the massive ethnic cleansing in Turkey and Greece following World War I, the German occupation in World War II, the following brutal civil war, the conflict with Turkey over Cyprus, the military coup of 1967, democracy at long last, and the country's entry into the European Union. Written by one of the most brilliant political scientists in the academy, Modern Greece is the go-to resource for understanding both the current crisis and the historical events that brought the country to where it is today.
