Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vietnam Business Guide GETTING STARTED IN TOMORROW'S MARKET TODAY Kimberly and Brian Vierra have written the most useful guide I have seen for foreigners who want to do business in Vietnam. I've spent years in the country, but I learned a lot from this book. It's full of practical information about unique aspects of Vietnam's business culture; registration, legal and tax issues; working with local business partners; living conditions in Vietnam and industry-specific opportunities. Interviews with experienced expatriates bring the issues to life. The Vierras are very frank about tough problems such as corruption, but they also convey a real affection for and understanding of this wonderful country. Raymond Burghardt Former US Ambassador to Vietnam; Director, Indochina Capital Corporation Vietnam Business Guide is the book that every seasoned Southeast Asia hand, bellied up to a Saigon bar, says he ought to write. Be thankful the Vierras made good on this common boast. Unstinting, pragmatic, penetrating and incredibly accessible, this highly readable volume may not keep you from the suffering the pain of starting up, but if read closely, with a yellow highlighter may very well spare you the agony of undue blood-letting. There will be blood, but Vietnam Business Guide will mitigate the flow. James Sullivan Managing Director, Mandarin Media; Author, National Geographic Vietnam and Over the Moat Vietnam Business Guide provides practical and balanced information about Vietnam for foreigners to plan their first steps to enter the market. What separate this book from others are its reality and practicality, brought about by both the authors who themselves are entrepreneurs having walked the same journey and the experts who contributed their experiences on different topics throughout the book. The business landscape in Vietnam is speedily changing. Some facts, by the time you read the book, may need updating but still it serves best in providing newcomers essential starting points a should-read book for those who consider doing business in Vietnam! Vu Minh Tri General Director, Yahoo! Vietnam Co. Ltd. I believe that Vietnam Business Guide has been very objective and true to its purpose. It covers almost all relevant business and personal challenges that one would face in Vietnam, with the authors' firsthand experience shining through in their handling of culture issues and the Vietnamese mindset. Despite the constraints on size, it has sufficient details and a wealth of references to guide entrepreneurs and business executives in the right direction. Crisply written with interviews and real-life anecdotes, it makes for a very interesting read. A must-read book and an invaluable tool kit for anyone looking to Vietnam for business. Book excerpt: Private sector growth will be key to maintaining the dynamism of the Vietnamese economy and allowing the country to achieve its development objectives, the study finds. The authors point out that, above all, private enterprises need space to grow. Regulations that run counter to the logic of normal market practices, that give entrepreneurs few opportunities to enter into contractual relationships, or that penalize them for market success are bound to be circumvented, at significant social cost. By contrast, laws and regulations that are in harmony with market forces will be easier to implement, and their implementation will be supported by the same market forces they are designed to protect. Adapting laws and regulations to the needs of the marketplace will not be enough, however. According to the authors, incentives inside the bureaucracy need to be aligned with development. A government committed to development will find it beneficial to support the growth of the private sector.

Book excerpt: This Palgrave Pivot provides an introduction to the economy and business environment of Vietnam, a member of the ASEAN Economic Community whose economy is rapidly growing. The introduction argues that though there may be perceived disadvantages in investing in Vietnam, there are a number of benefits as well, such as the country's openness to trade and foreign direct investment, the increasing ease of doing business there and the dynamism of the economy. The book then provides an overview of Vietnam's economic policy since 1975, covering reunification, attempts at a command economy, and finally renovation under Doi Moi Policy. Further chapters cover the expansion of the private sector, interest in foreign investment, and the peculiarities of marketing and finance in Vietnam. As an edited volume with chapters written by Vietnamese scholars across economics, history, and business, this book is critical reading for researchers studying Vietnam and other Asian economies and for businesses interested in expanding into that market.

Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises in Vietnam provides a comprehensive analytic contribution to a crucial topic within development economics. Based on fifteen years of continued data collection and research efforts it brings together nine up-to-date studies on micro, small, and medium enterprise (SME) development in a coherent framework to help persuade national and international policymakers of the need to take the international call for a data revolution seriously. This edited volume provides an in-depth evaluation of the development of private sector formal and informal manufacturing SMEs in Vietnam over the past decade, combining a unique primary data source with the best panel data and analytical tools available. It generates a comprehensive understanding of the impact of business risks, credit access, institutional characteristics, and government policies, and makes available a set of materials and studies of use to academics, students, and development practitioners interested in an integrated approach to the study of growth, private sector development, and the microeconomic analysis of SME development in a fascinating developing country. Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises in Vietnam serves as a lense through which other countries, and the international development community at large, may wish to approach the massive task of pursuing a meaningful data revolution as an integral element of the Sustainable Development Goals agenda.

Book excerpt: Ramparts Magazine's Vietnam War examines the publication's depiction of America's war in Indochina, which was the magazine's greatest focus. Ramparts published more essays about Vietnam than about any other single topic. The magazine also went out of business just a few months after the official end of the war. Chapters examine the magazine's depiction of Vietnam as several wars in one. Chapter One unpacks the magazine's depiction of the war as a cultural phenomenon and abstraction that happened 13,000 miles away from the continental United States. Chapter Two examines the magazine's depiction of corporate interests in America's war in Indochina, followed by a chapter that examines Washington's war in Vietnam. That chapter is followed by an examination of the war lived by American soldiers, as well as the war endured by the Vietnamese people. The final chapter examines Ramparts Magazine's unflinching advocacy of the antiwar movement in the U.S.
