Book Synopsis Consumer Australia by : Robert Crawford
Download or read book Consumer Australia written by Robert Crawford and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-06-09 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Donald Horne’s The Lucky Country claimed that “Australia was one of the first nations to find part of the meaning of life in the purchase of consumer goods.” Significantly, similar views had been expressed in the late 18th century, where everyday life in the antipodean outpost of Empire was regarded as being pecuniary and acquisitive in nature. While references to Australia as a “consumer society” continue to be made, the question of how Australia came to be so has attracted less attention. The chapters in Consumer Australia actively redress this omission by examining the ways in which the processes of selling, buying, and exchanging have characterised the experiences of consumption in every day Australian life. Prepared by leading and emerging scholars, the chapters in this unique collection critically explore the different ways that Australians have consumed products, brands, and even consumption itself from the 19th century and through the 20th century. By charting the growth and development of consumption in Australia, Consumer Australia reveals how Australia came to be a “consumer society” and asks where it is headed.
Book Synopsis Life on the Victorian Railways by : Nick Anchen
Download or read book Life on the Victorian Railways written by Nick Anchen and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Victorian Railways of old was far more than just a transport business - it was a great railway family, where employees were treated as valued members of the organisation. Life on the Victorian Railways explores a bygone era, through the recollections and humorous stories of a selection of railwaymen who performed a variety of roles, such as Lad Labourer, Junior Clerk, Engine Cleaner, Steam Fitter, Train Guard, Passenger Train Conductor, Ticket Examiner, Station Master, Train Controller and District Superintendent. From the grimy North Melbourne Locomotive Depot to the glamorous Southern Aurora express train, dedicated railwaymen and women across the state carried out their often unseen duties, and contributed to the day-to-day operations of the grand, traditional old 'VR' - that proud institution now consigned to the pages of history.
Book Synopsis Railways and Australian Identity by : Keith Hallett
Download or read book Railways and Australian Identity written by Keith Hallett and published by Brolga Publishing. This book was released on 2022-09-01 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The powerful headlight probes the darkness; voluminous clouds of black smoke billow from the chimneys, steam erupts from the safety valves, a ruddy glow lights the cab as butterfly doors are jerked open, flashing rods and driving wheels are highlighted by the running lights and overall there is now a triumphant beat." The railway is shown on maps as permanent way, however many lines are now abandoned. But the experiences of rail trips to distant places by train are, to many, deeply remembered events. This study acknowledges the essential economic effects of the rail network, but also celebrates the human responses, and when taken in overview, contributes to our continuing exploration of what it is to be Australian. Keith Hallett has spent equal parts of his career as teacher and historian, but from early boyhood in the Dandenongs responded to the magic of steam echoing through the hills. A love of rail has underlined his work, and continues with his volunteer work on the Victorian Goldfields Railway, passing this love of trains to his sons and grandchildren.

Book excerpt: Nestled in the shadows of the Victorian Alps, the majestic Ovens and King River valleys first attracted prospectors during the 1850s gold rush. When the railway age arrived in the north east, iron roads were pushed through to the townships of Beechworth, Yackandandah, Bright and Whitfield. Book Synopsis Engines of Influence by : Elizabeth Morrison
Download or read book Engines of Influence written by Elizabeth Morrison and published by Academic Monographs. This book was released on 2005 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engines of Influence is a fifty-year history of Victoria's country newspapers, beginning with James Harrison's Geelong Advertiser in 1840 and ending in December 1890 when 166 papers were being published in 122 country towns. This significant book identifies all press sites and newspapers of the era, whether long-lasting or short-lived, and highlights the major part played by them in helping construct the machinery of government, lay the foundations of party politics and foster a sense of rural Victorian identity. The country press was an important agent of political change leading up to events such as the separation of the Port Phillip District from New South Wales in 1851, and the federation of the colony of Victoria with other British dependencies into a single nation at the end of the nineteenth century. Engines of Influence shows how country newspapers also exercised cultural authority, circulating ideas generated both within local communities and from the wider world. Towards the end of the fifty years examined, this rural press was becoming a close part of a unified political state, linked through the metropolitan press and agencies to a technologically-based global communications network.
