This book was released on 2023-10-15 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elizabeth Gwillim (1763–1807) and her sister Mary Symonds (1772–1854) produced over two hundred watercolours depicting birds, fish, flowers, people, and landscapes around Madras (now Chennai). The sisters’ detailed letters fill four large volumes in the British Library; their artwork is in the Blacker Wood Natural History Collection of McGill University Library in Canada and in the South Asia Collection in Britain. The first book about their work and lives, Women, Environment, and Networks of Empire asks what these materials reveal about nature, society, and environment in early nineteenth-century South India. Gwillim and Symonds left for India in 1801, following the appointment of Elizabeth’s husband, Henry Gwillim, to the Supreme Court of Madras. Their paintings document, on one hand, the rapidly expanding colonial city of Madras and its population and, on the other, the natural environment and wildlife of the city. Gwillim’s paintings of birds are remarkable for their detail, naturalism, and accuracy. In their studies of natural history, Gwillim and Symonds relied on the expertise of Indian bird-catchers, fishermen, physicians, artists, and translators, contributing to a unique intersection of European and Asian natural knowledge. The sisters’ extensive correspondence demonstrates how women shaped networks of trade and scholarship through exchanges of plants, books, textiles, and foods. In Women, Environment, and Networks of Empire an interdisciplinary group of scholars use the paintings and writings of Elizabeth Gwillim and Mary Symonds to explore natural history, the changing environment, colonialism, and women’s lives at the turn of the nineteenth century.

Book Synopsis Ellsworth Kelly by : Ellsworth Kelly
Download or read book Ellsworth Kelly written by Ellsworth Kelly and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paintings of Ellsworth Kelly (born 1923) are famous for their hard edges, minimalist abstraction and above all, their bright, vibrant colors. Less known are the black-and-white drawings, collages and paintings that preceded or accompanied many of them, despite the fact that they make up roughly 20 percent of his total output. Ellsworth Kelly: Black & White and the exhibition it accompanies bring together the artist's color-free work for the first time, and offer a fresh take on his long career, emphasizing his use of shape, contrast, texture and his incorporation of such everyday objects as a broken windowpane, a handrail shadow or the leaf of a plant into his abstraction. This catalogue makes clear that the scale of contrast between black and white was key to Kelly's artistic self-discovery and subsequent development, and is crucial to any proper understanding of his oeuvre.

Download or read book Ryoji Koie written by Ryōji Koie and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the many Japanese ceramic artists working today, Ryoji Koie is the one at the most critical interface with contemporary art. Whether teabowl, vase, open-mouthed cylinder, tray, or bottle, Koie's chosen shapes are instantly identifiable as pottery yet they become departure-points for an extraordinary range of surface treatments from the indulgent to the austere. This volume illustrates and considers a body of work created by Koie during a residency in Seattle at the University of Washington. He located natural deposits of clay in a variety of local sites. Vases, vessels, trays, footed plates, and "stretched" plates were created in profusion, each subject to the artist's free-wheeling imagination in altering, throwing, ripping and tearing, and applying glaze and liquid clay or "slip".

Book excerpt: "It is this passionâe"unpredictable, rich, contagiousâe" that will draw you into the tender poems in the Draw of Broken Eyes, poems that not only reflect his childhood and young adult yearsâe"but the lessons they have taught him.You will experience the loss of love âeoeyou are the catalyst and the razor, the haunting I canâe(tm)t rememberâe , the pain of regretâe"âeoea road has stolen her closeness to me, the door is flung open with nothing outside but a humid afternoonâe and the longing for redemption, where Brooks writes âeoereminding a sinner home is home, even alone.âe Like Don Henleyâe(tm)s Desperado, Cliffâe(tm)s life has been filled with many opportunities, though often times it seems he has only wanted those things he could not have. So, did this whirling-dervish of a Renaissance man finally find his redemption? Youâe(tm)ll have to decide for yourselfâe"but the journey in The Draw of Broken Eyes is not to be missed. And then there is Whirling Metaphysics, the second book in this two-part collection. In what Cliff says is a sort of re-creation of his days working with the Department of Juvenile Justice in rural northwest Georgia, these poems will sting you with their honesty and shock you with their insight.David R. Altman is the Books & Writers Editor of the Pickens County (Ga.) Progress. He was nominated for Georgia Author of the Year in 2015 for his poetry chapbook âeoeDeath in the Foyerâe, and has written for several publications including the Athens Banner-Herald, the Gwinnett Daily Post and Georgia Outdoor News.
