Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ruy Blas The study of some part of Hugo's work is, therefore, essen tial in any, even the most cursory, survey of French literature. His dramas adapt themselves more easily to such study than his other works, chiefly because the theatre was chosen as the battle-ground of the innovators in their contest with the con servatives. It seems to be conceded, at least by usage, if not otherwise, that Ray Bias and Harnam' are to be the stand-bys for college class-work, and the former has slightly the lead as a favorite, in that the poet has therein reached a higher plane of dramatical lyrism than in the latter. Book Synopsis Dramatic Works of Victor Hugo (Classic Reprint) by : Victor Hugo
Download or read book Dramatic Works of Victor Hugo (Classic Reprint) written by Victor Hugo and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dramatic Works of Victor Hugo As the Translator of "Hernani" and "Ruy Blas," I may be permitted to offer a few remarks on the three great dramas which are now presented in an English form to the English-speaking public. Each of these works is preceded by the Author's Preface, which perhaps exhausts all that had to be said of the play which follows - from his own original point of view. It is curious to contrast the confident egotism, the frequent self-assertion, and the indignation at repression which mark the prefaces to "Hernani" and "Le Roi s'Amuse" with the calm dignity of the very fine dramatic criticism which introduces the reader to "Ruy Blas." But when the last-named tragedy was produced, Victor Hugo's fame was established and his literary position secure; he no longer had need to assert himself, for if a few enemies still remained, their voices were but as the buzzing of flies about a giant. Trusting that the Author's Prefaces will be carefully read, I will endeavour only to supplement what is said in them. "Hernani" belongs emphatically to the romantic school, and to the period in European literature when the bonds of olden custom in all the arts were being broken - often for good results, though not always. Book Synopsis The Death of Tragedy by : George Steiner
Download or read book The Death of Tragedy written by George Steiner and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2013-04-16 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DIVAn engrossing and provocative look at the decline of tragedy in modern art “All men are aware of tragedy in life. But tragedy as a form of drama is not universal.” So begins George Steiner’s adept analysis of the demise of classic tragedy as a dramatic depiction of heroism and suffering. In The Death of Tragedy, Steiner examines the uniqueness and importance of the Greek classical tragedy—from antiquity to the age of Jean Racine and William Shakespeare—as providing stark insight into the grief and joy of human existence. Then, delving into the works of John Keats, Henrik Ibsen, Samuel Beckett, and many more, Steiner demonstrates how the tragic voice has greatly diminished in modern theater, and what we have lost in the process./div

Download or read book Hernani by Victor Hugo (Book Analysis) written by Bright Summaries and published by BrightSummaries.com. This book was released on 2018-06-20 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlock the more straightforward side of Hernani with this concise and insightful summary and analysis! This engaging summary presents an analysis of Hernani by Victor Hugo, which tells the story of the titular bandit as he tries to be with the woman he loves, Donna Sol. Given that Donna Sol is already engaged to her uncle and Hernani must live life as an outlaw, their relationship seems impossible, and the happiness they have long yearned for is ultimately snatched away before they can truly savour it. Because it openly flouted the conventions of classical theatre, the play inspired a lively polemic when it was first performed, but later came to be recognised as a classic work of French drama. Its author, Victor Hugo, was one of the leading figures of the Romantic movement in France, and is known in particular for his novels Les Misérables and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Find out everything you need to know about Hernani in a fraction of the time!
