Book excerpt: "Dr. Miller's Counseling Crime Victims is extremely effective...and it will occupy a central spot on my bookshelf...It is really a golden find." --Society for Police and Criminal Psychology "Here is the gold standard - the book for mental health clinicians helping crime victims sort through one of life's most difficult and traumatic experiences.--Richard L. Levenson, Jr., Psy.D., CTS Licensed Psychologist, New York State As more and more mental health professionals are becoming involved in the criminal justice system - as social service providers, victim advocates, court liaisons, expert witnesses, and clinical therapists - there has not been a commensurate improvement in the quality of text material to address this expanding and diverse field. Until now, students and practicing professionals have had to content themselves with either overly broad texts on criminology or trauma theory, or exceeding narrow tracts on one or another sub-area of victim services. Counseling Crime Victims provides a unique approach to helping victims of crime. By distilling and combining the best insights and lessons from the fields of criminology, victimology, trauma psychology, law enforcement, and psychotherapy, this book presents an integrated model of intervention for students and working mental health professionals in the criminal justice system. The book blends solid empirical research scholarship with practical, hit-the-ground-running recommendations that mental health professionals can begin using immediately in their daily work with victims. Counseling Crime Victims is a practical guide and reference book that working mental health clinicians will consult again and again in their daily practices. This book will also be of use to attorneys, judges, law enforcement officers, social service providers and others who work with crime victims in the criminal justice system. It can also serve as a college- and graduate-level text for courses in Psychology and Criminal Justice. Key Features of this Book: Victim assistance is becoming a full-fledged field for social workers and counselors A practical, hands-on guide which offers counselors techniques for dealing with victims of a wide variety of crimes Shows counselors how to guide their clients through the legal and judicial system

Book excerpt: In a barren field in the fictional town of Monkhole, Herbert stands watch over the cows-his sole form of amusement-daydreaming of his mother, who has disappeared with a UFO cult, the Overcomers. Meanwhile, his friend Howard works obsessively on a tome about victimology. It may be up to their friend Ruphis to unravel the mystery of the Overcomers, Herbert's battle against gravity, Howard's against the great white wall and the nature of those mysterious lights hovering in the clouds... Travis Jeppesen's debut novel, first published in 2003, set literary culture off balance by giving voice to the demented lifestyle of cultists. Victims returns to reanimate these spectral figures, and the forces and forms hidden in their shadows. "Victims holds a remarkably confident and able line through complicated waters... brilliant." -Tom McCarthy "An artfully fractured vision of memory and escape..." -Village Voice "Jeppesen's novel has the potential to change your life." -Bookslut

The implementation pattern may vary depending on the type of rights a jurisdiction offers and the purposes it seeks to achieve via these rights. However, there are a few basic aspects that remain common to the variation in the implementation patterns across jurisdictions. This book provides a theoretical and practical overview of such implementation patterns, their features and underlying differences. It presents theoretical models capturing the different types of implementations of victims’ rights and the purposes that they can achieve. The book also offers a framework comprising the essential aspects involved in implementation of rights such as drafting and presentation, their visibility and accessibility to victims, enforcement of rights in case of breach, and assessment and evaluation of rights to ensure constant monitoring and improvement in implementation. The framework is tested by a sample case study in New Delhi, India, which showcases how the framework can be molded and applied to assess the existing implementation of victims’ rights and the scope for reform. The book will be of interest to those working in the areas of criminal justice, criminal procedure, victimology and human rights.

Book excerpt: Victims of Violence: For the Record presents readers with an innovative and timely lens through which to examine contemporary acts of violent victimization. The book illuminates specific types of victimization and how they are portrayed in criminological literature and the press, most notably within The New York Times. Readers are challenged to examine how the victims The New York Times has chosen to cover may--or may not--represent the typical victim and victimization patterns that are reported in empirical research. The book is organized into three sections. The first section focuses on violent victimization that occurs during the criminal justice process. The second section looks at victims of violence who are injured or killed in routine settings as they move through their lives. The final section examines violence that is often directed against victims who are targeted by their attackers due to race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, nationality, or immigration status. Presenting modern and thought-provoking research on the intersection of victimization and the media, Victims of Violence is ideal for courses in criminal justice and criminology, especially those with focus on victimization and mass media. Book excerpt: The Victim's Guide to Surviving the Narcissist/Sociopath Updated and its first position 300-plus page Pre-Book is a two books-in-one book designed to assist victims of covert spousal predators and their support persons understand the reality of the covert spousal predator (i.e. the narcissist, malignant narcissist, sociopath/psychopath, dual diagnosed/dual diagnosable, narcopath). This material delves into the worst case scenario possible for the spousal victim as well as common red flags, exploitation, strip-mining, predatory take-ALL agenda and abuse patterns perpetrated by the covert spousal predator in his/her hunting prime and afterward when the predator decompensates. Many valuable references are provided throughout this book for further education/research and understanding. Readers are strongly encouraged to continue their review of material created by all of the referenced educators and authors listed in this book. Moreover, the top mistakes made by victims, support persons for victims, professionals, law enforcement and others are detailed in the hopes that readers will avoid making as many of these errors as they face various scenarios with the predator or predators in their lives or in the lives of others they are attempting to assist. For spousal victims in the worst case scenario with an empowered/aided and abetted covert spousal predator (i.e. situations where common minor children are involved) this book covers topics typically not touched in the material of others. This book is not about overt spousal predators (i.e. abusers whose victims can effectively use the system and/or domestic violence shelter assistance to flee) though overt predators perpetrate many of the same abuse patterns minus the skill of becoming aided and abetted via abuse by proxy scams, which are commonly the mainstay of the covert predator's take-ALL agenda.

Book excerpt: This book is a guide to the law and practice of victims’ roles before the International Criminal Court, the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia and the Special Tribunal for Lebanon. The various chapters focus on the provisions relevant to victim participation at these courts and the case law interpreting and applying those provisions. The book thus informs the reader on the principal ways in which the relevant practice is developing, the distinct avenues taken in the application of similar provisions as well as the ensuing advantages and challenges. Unlike other volumes focusing on relevant academic literature, this volume is written mainly by practitioners and is addressed to those lawyers, legal advisers and victimologists who work or wish to work in the field of victim participation in international criminal justice. Kinga Tibori-Szabó is legal officer for the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague and has previously worked for the Legal Representative of Victims at the Special Tribunal for Lebanon. Megan Hirst is a barrister at Doughty Street Chambers in London and has worked on victims' participation issues in the Registries of the International Criminal Court and the Special Tribunal for Lebanon, as well as in an LRV team in Prosecutor v. Dominic Ongwen.

Book excerpt: Crime is largely an urban phenomenon, but the specifically urban and area dimen sions of the social processes that are connected with crime have been seriously understated in much recent criminological work ... Such a claim could not have been made forty years ago. (Baldwin & Bottoms, 1976, p. 1). The above statement by Baldwin and Bottoms about the neglect in crimi nology of the urban dimension of crime was made in the mid-1970s. However, in the last decade there has been a significant upswing in theory and research on crime in the urban environment. Also, new areas oftheory and research into urban crime have come into focus. (For overviews see Brantingham & Brantingham, 1984; Davidson, 1981.) One very good example of the increasing interest in urban crime is the recent volume of Crime and Justice entitled "Communities and Crime" (Reiss & Tonry, 1986), in which Reiss makes a strong argument for the importance of the study of crime in urban communities and for the linking of the ecological and individual traditions in theory and research on crime. A review of the literature on crime in urban environments shows, not unexpectedly, that Anglo-American research heavily dominates the scene (Wikstrom, 1982; 1987b). Hence, much of the experience we have on urban crime is based on North American and British research and theory.

How have those initiatives unfolded differently in different global jurisdictions over different periods of time? This book aims to address these questions. Building on a major research project exploring victims’ access to justice over time and place, Victims' Access to Justice considers the potentialities for victims’ participation in criminal justice systems and in victim programmes both in historical and comparative context. It considers a range of topics: ways of identifying and accommodating victims’ needs and senses of justice; the impacts for criminal justice systems of seeking to accommodate these; and the ways in which adversarial criminal justice systems, in particular, may enable or inhibit victim participation. This is essential reading for all those engaged in understanding and working with victims of crime.
