Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the acute effects of stretching and local vibration on flexibility and explosive strength in competitive female gymnasts. Flexibility was measured in the forward-split position and jump characteristics were recorded using a force plate. Analysis included flight time (FT), jump height (JH), peak force (PF), instantaneous forces, and rates of force development (RFDs). Randomly assigned and counterbalanced groups were: simultaneous vibration-stretching (VS) (n=22), stretching-only (n=7), and vibration-only (n=8). VS showed statistically greater measures of flexibility in both the right and left leg, favored and non-favored legs pre- versus post-treatment. Vibration-only group resulted in statistically greater right forward-split flexibility and non-favored leg flexibility. There were no statistical differences in JH, FT, PF, instantaneous forces, or RFDs in the VS, stretching-only, and vibration-only groupsâ pre- versus post-treatment tests. The conclusion was simultaneous vibration-stretching greatly increased flexibility while not altering explosive strength.

Researchers have extensively investigated many aspects of a training program such as strength training, power training, and cardiovascular training. Though these are all very important components of any training regimen, a lack of research exists in the area of flexibility training which has a direct impact on the success of athletes in sports such as gymnastics, platform diving, and figure skating. One relatively new and little studied method of enhancing flexibility is the application of vibration during stretching. The aim of this study was to investigate the acute effects of a vibration static stretching intervention on enhancing split range of motion in young female gymnasts. 22 female gymnasts (age= 13.8 ± 2.25 yr, height= 151.4 ± 7.9 cm, mass= 47.5 ± 11.0 kg) volunteered to participate. Gymnasts were randomly assigned to experimental (n = 11) and control (n = 11) groups. The test consisted of adopting a forward split position with the rear leg bent to 90° and held vertically against a matted block while the pelvis remained perpendicular to the lines of the two legs. Once the gymnast had assumed the testing position and descended into the lowest split position of her comfortable pain tolerance, two measures were taken from the anterior superior iliac spine to the floor, using a metric ruler. In addition to this, each gymnast was videotaped in the split position for later digitization and analysis. The stretching intervention consisted of a forward split position with emphasis on the front leg hamstring muscle group, followed by a forward lunge position with emphasis on the rear leg quadriceps muscle group. In each position, four sets of stretches were completed for ten second durations and five seconds of rest between each set. The experimental group performed stretches with the vibration device turned on while the control group performed the same stretches with the vibration device turned off. A pre-test was performed to obtain baseline scores with the posttest following immediately after the vibration or control stretching intervention. Split Passive Range of Motion (SPROM) scores were averaged across both measured trials for both pre- and posttest measurements. Measurements of passive and dynamic flexibility were obtained using the TOPS forward split testing method to examine passive flexibility and dynamic flexibility was measured via split jumps that were analyzed with video and Dartfish software. According to randomized order, all participants completed a stretching protocol either with the WBV platform turned on (VIB) or off (C) separated by 48 h. Participants performed 4 sets of three stretches on the WBV platform. An ANCOVA was performed (using height, weight, age, years of experience, and gymnastics level as covariates). Significant improvements were found in passive flexibility for both VIB and C conditions, but there was no significant difference between the two stretching conditions (p = 0.17). It is unclear whether similar results can be shown in the general population who do not utilize the same extreme ranges of motion. The purpose of this study was to measure the effect ofvibration while stretching on hip extension range of motion. Thirty participants (21.5 ± 1.77 years, 172 ± 8.64 cm, and 73.18 ± 11.82 kg) had their maximal hip extension range of motion measured before the stretching intervention. Hip extension was measured using a double-arm universal goniometer and a modified Thomas test. Each subject served as their own control and a randomly chosen leg served as the experimental condition and the other served as the control. Subjects stretched their hip flexors in a lunge position on the experimental leg with the vibration stimulus activated, and again on the control leg without the vibration stimulus. After the intervention, maximal hip extension was measured again. Difference scores were calculated in each condition and compared using a student's paired t-test. The paired t-test showed that both static stretching with vibration and static stretching alone significantly increased hip extension range of motion (p = 0.001 and 0.007, respectively). A paired t-test also found that the vibration stimulus increased range of motion significantly more than static stretching alone with a mean difference of 1.81 ± 3.30° (p = 0.005).
