En el libro se describe con precisión la situación y características del viñedo germano, un viñedo que data ya de la época de los romanos. Gran parte de las viñas alemanas se encuentran en el límite de maduración de la uva; más arriba de los 50º de latitud línea que atraviesa la región del Rheingau-, ya sólo se puede producir cerveza y aguardiente. Pero, como el mismo Goethe dijo en cierta ocasión, es en las grandes dificultades y adversidades naturales donde nacen muchas veces los grandes vinos.
