Book Synopsis via media philosophy by : L. Bryan Williams
Download or read book via media philosophy written by L. Bryan Williams and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-03-26 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, via media philosophy: Holiness unto Truth. Conversations between Wesleyan and Roman Catholic Voices, records the first formal philosophical conversations between Wesleyan and Roman Catholic philosophers and theologians. Although the Methodist community has developed numerous points of intersection with Roman Catholic counterparts, authors from smaller Wesleyan/Holiness groups along with Roman Catholic writers now offer new philosophical conversations. This book begins that conversation with a review of Pope John Paul II's call in Fides et Ratio [Faith and Reason] for adequate dialogue by philosophers on crucial areas of mutual concern. Important bridges between the two communities are developed within each chapter. Examples of via media practices in the lives of Rev. John Wesley and Cardinal John Henry Newman are highlighted. An editorial thread of other via media practices is offered after each chapter. A special contribution by Marquette Professor D. Stephen Long, "Performing the Truth," closes this conversation with a call for holiness unto truth to be made present in the world. This book strives to facilitate early steps along a via media to a holy relationship unto truth between Wesleyan and Roman Catholic voices.

Book Synopsis Liveness on Stage by : Claudia Georgi
Download or read book Liveness on Stage written by Claudia Georgi and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2014-08-27 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theatre is traditionally considered a live medium but its ‘liveness’ can no longer simply be taken for granted in view of the increasing mediatisation of the stage. Drawing on theories of intermediality, Liveness on Stage explores how performances that incorporate film or video self-reflexively stage and challenge their own liveness by contrasting or approximating live and mediatised action. To illustrate this, the monograph investigates key aspects such as ‘ephemerality’, ‘co-presence’, ‘unpredictability’, ‘interaction’ and ‘realistic representation’ and highlights their significance for re-evaluating received notions of liveness. The analysis is based on productions by Gob Squad, Forkbeard Fantasy, Station House Opera, Proto-type Theater, Tim Etchells and Mary Oliver. In their playful approaches these practitioners predominantly present such media combination as a means of cross-fertilisation rather than as an antagonism between liveness and mediatisation. Combining an original theoretical approach with an in-depth analysis of the selected productions, this study will appeal to scholars and practitioners of theatre and performance as well as to those researching intermedial phenomena.
Book Synopsis A Companion to Anglican Eucharistic Theology by : Brian Douglas
Download or read book A Companion to Anglican Eucharistic Theology written by Brian Douglas and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-11-25 with total page 689 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anglican eucharistic theology varies between the different philosophical assumptions of realism and nominalism. Whereas realism links the signs of the Eucharist with what they signify in a real way, nominalism sees these signs as reminders only of past and completed transaction. This book begins by discussing the multifomity of the philosophical assumptions underlying Anglican eucharistic theology and goes on to present extensive case study material which exemplify these different assumptions from the Reformation to the Nineteenth century. By examining the multiformity of philosophical assumptions this book avoids the hermeneutic idealism of particular church parties and looks instead at the Anglican eucharistic tradition in a more critical manner.
