While over 300 maps were submitted to this contest, 100 of them appear in this book. They represent a global sample of the various special places chosen by 100 different artists. Book excerpt: This is the story of a handful of boys in 650 BC Jerusalem who encounter illness and death along with family ties and friendly relationships. Perhaps family life 2650 years ago was not so different from what we wish them to be today. Husbands loved their wives, boys adored their fathers, daughters displayed the Godlike feminine qualities and behaviors of their mothers, and behind every turn in the road...DANGER. "Jacob listened for an hour or more, putting together the story as they talked on and off about why they were here and who had sent them. Finally he decided that it was futile to try to save anyone; evidently there was no one to save, as far as he knew he was the sole survivor of the once proud little village of Hamadi. It was hard for him to control his emotions as he sat in his hiding place and listened to the soldier's talk of the atrocities they had performed upon his people, but then his thoughts turned to Lehi and Ishmael."

Book excerpt: It's time to get off the beaten path. Inspiring equal parts wonder and wanderlust, Atlas Obscura celebrates over 700 of the strangest and most curious places in the world. Talk about a bucket list: here are natural wonders—the dazzling glowworm caves in New Zealand, or a baobob tree in South Africa that's so large it has a pub inside where 15 people can drink comfortably. Architectural marvels, including the M.C. Escher-like stepwells in India. Mind-boggling events, like the Baby Jumping Festival in Spain, where men dressed as devils literally vault over rows of squirming infants. Not to mention the Great Stalacpipe Organ in Virginia, Turkmenistan's 40-year hole of fire called the Gates of Hell, a graveyard for decommissioned ships on the coast of Bangladesh, eccentric bone museums in Italy, or a weather-forecasting invention that was powered by leeches, still on display in Devon, England. Created by Joshua Foer, Dylan Thuras and Ella Morton, ATLAS OBSCURA revels in the weird, the unexpected, the overlooked, the hidden and the mysterious. Every page expands our sense of how strange and marvelous the world really is. And with its compelling descriptions, hundreds of photographs, surprising charts, maps for every region of the world, it is a book to enter anywhere, and will be as appealing to the armchair traveler as the die-hard adventurer. Anyone can be a tourist. ATLAS OBSCURA is for the explorer.

'Highly compelling' Spectator, Books of the Year 'An evocative foray into the prehistoric past' BBC Countryfile Magazine 'Vividly relating what life was like in pre-Roman Britain' Choice Magazine 'Makes life in Britain BC often sound rather more appealing than the frenetic and anxious 21st century!' Daily Mail In Scenes from Prehistoric Life, the distinguished archaeologist Francis Pryor paints a vivid picture of British and Irish prehistory, from the Old Stone Age (about one million years ago) to the arrival of the Romans in AD 43, in a sequence of fifteen profiles of ancient landscapes. Whether writing about the early human family who trod the estuarine muds of Happisburgh in Norfolk c.900,000 BC, the craftsmen who built a wooden trackway in the Somerset Levels early in the fourth millennium BC, or the Iron Age denizens of Britain's first towns, Pryor uses excavations and surveys to uncover the daily routines of our ancient ancestors. By revealing how our prehistoric forebears coped with both simple practical problems and more existential challenges, Francis Pryor offers remarkable insights into the long and unrecorded centuries of our early history, and a convincing, well-attested and movingly human portrait of prehistoric life as it was really lived.

Still others are the sources of rare minerals and some are important for resources such as groundwater, while some are venerated as sites of religious, spiritual and cultural importance. Many such landforms encompass one or many of these values. As special places, cave and karst landforms require special management. This small booklet has been prepared as a brief guide for planners, managers and users of cave and karst estates and provides general information and practical guidelines for the management of cave and karst ecosystems.

Book excerpt: About the book Dear Reader. So, I have visited five continents, four homelands of the most famous ancient cultures, three biggest countries. It was my dream when I was a little girl and now I have traveled. Also, something urged me to write my feeling, impression of those travels and I want to share with friends, especially want to share with young friends who is hoping about new lands. This book is not a guide-book to travel. It also was not a list of all my travels or all countries where I came. This book was a collection of my experience, impression and feeling of countries, regions where I visited. It included joy, worry, anxiety, surprise and disappointment, suddenness and interest…Would be more useful when the book was written by bilingual: Vietnamese and English. These bilingual pages could make more enthusiasm and self-confident when you are thinking about trips, preparing or traveling in somewhere. Honestly, when I started writing stories in English, I was unself-confident and knew that I should study so much. One American author, he is my friend, who edited my first stories, laughed when I told that sometimes my English could be “silly” because I was not an American. He said if I though that every American could speak and write English very well then it was not true; United States of America was the country of many people from other countries. It seemed as their “silly” English could make freshness and riches of American-English. It was accepted like as a factor of language development. In this book, feeling and experience of travels spread from near to far, step by step, in five sections. The first section included stories of Asian travels with the starting point was a story of Hanoi, my native city. The second section was my impression in Australia. My experience and feeling of travels in Europe were presented in the third section. The fourth section was stories of mysterious land - Egypt. The last section included stories of my travel in USA, the country with distance is half of the earth from Vietnam. Feeling of a oversea travel started from apply for entry visa. Every time I received a new visa on my passport, I got special feeling. It seemed that a door opened in front of my eyes, step by step, with new things. “Visa” also was the name of a story in this book. For many Vietnamese, “visa” (English word) more familiar than “thi thuc” (Vietnamese word). Therefore, VISA is the name of this book. When the book “Visa” is published, it can bring to me the similiar feeling, it opens door for next books with new travels and new others. The world is a big village. Please, let go and come, try and feel. Thank so much for my friends, who helped me in nice travels and helped me to complete this book. Thank Google’s help to transfer this book to Readers. Thank Reader.
