Book Synopsis Wrong-Doing, Truth-Telling by : Michel Foucault
Download or read book Wrong-Doing, Truth-Telling written by Michel Foucault and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2014-06-04 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three years before his death Michel Foucault gave a series of lectures at the Catholic University of Louvain that have remained relatively unknown until only recently. Entitled "Wrong-Doing, Truth-Telling, " these lectures provides the missing link between Foucault s early work on sexuality and punishment and his later work on Greek and Roman antiquity. Ranging broadly from Homer to the 20th century, Foucault traces how the early ethical acts of truth-telling in ancient Greece gradually metamorphosed into acts of self-incrimination in monastic times and ultimately into the birth and rise of psychiatry as the foundation of modern penology, criminology, and criminal justice. For Foucault, self-incrimination no longer did the work necessary to quell justice because, by the 19th century, we wanted to know more than just the fact of wrongdoing, we wanted to know who the criminal was: not just whether the accused committed the crime, but what it was about him that made him commit the crime. An avowal of wrong-doing was no longer sufficient psychiatric expertise was now necessary and that development marks the birth of discipline and modern criminal justice made so famous by Foucault"

Book Synopsis The Use of Abuse by : Richard Griffiths
Download or read book The Use of Abuse written by Richard Griffiths and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-01-07 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, which closely examines the techniques used by the polemists of the Dreyfus Affair, much is learned not only about the Mair itself, but also about the polemic of the age in which it was situated, and the interaction between writers and their public. The discourse within which people's thoughts were imprisoned is seen not merely to have reflected events, but to have created them, in an increasingly vicious circle whereby the language of popular abuse, incorporated into the written polemic of the Press, produced simple but distorted ideas which in turn were fed back into the people. The age's complete lack of concern for the libel laws led to particularly vivid examples of the art. We are shown how authors' shifts in vocabulary, and in stylistic techniques, unconsciously signal to us fundamental changes in their aims; and how, in the give-and-take of battle, words and concepts subtly changed their meaning, with certain abstract notions such as Truth and Justice becoming completely devalued.

Download or read book Vérité written by Rachel Blaufeld and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-13 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: That's me-Tingly Simmons-athlete, foreign-language major, professor lover, obsessed idiot girl. Definitely not a frat rat or sorority slut. I've never even played beer pong. I ditched the vapid, soulless high-society life of Los Angeles for the promise of something more meaningful in rural Ohio. Accepting a track scholarship for college, I tried running my way to happiness, but instead I ended up sleeping with my French professor and falling head over heels for him. When that relationship fell apart, so did I. Barely hanging on by a thread and using the most absurd coping skills, I was determined to hide behind my past indiscretions. That was, until I met Tiberius Jones. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I'd learn the truth about love from a six-foot-five basketball player.
Book Synopsis The Politics of Acknowledgement by : Joanna R. Quinn
Download or read book The Politics of Acknowledgement written by Joanna R. Quinn and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human rights violations leave deep scars on people, societies, and nations. Since the early 1990s, international rights groups have argued that resolving the violence of the past through instruments of transitional justice such as truth commissions is a necessary condition for a peaceful future. But how can nations ensure that these tribunals are the best path to reconciliation? The Politics of Acknowledgement develops a theoretical framework of acknowledgement with which to evaluate truth commissions. Rather than applying this framework to successful tribunals, Joanna Quinn uses it to analyze the difficulties encountered and the ultimate failure of two poorly understood truth commissions in Uganda and Haiti. The failure of these commissions reveals that if reconciliation is to be achieved, acknowledgement of past violence and harm – by both victims and perpetrators – must come before goals such as forgiveness, social trust, civic engagement, and social cohesion.

Book Synopsis Transitional Justice in Post-Revolutionary Tunisia (2011–2013) by : Domenica Preysing
Download or read book Transitional Justice in Post-Revolutionary Tunisia (2011–2013) written by Domenica Preysing and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-28 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Domenica Preysing offers a critical reading of “transitional justice” that focuses on political dynamics in post-revolutionary Tunisia, from the ouster of president Ben Ali in January 2011 until the adoption of transitional justice bill in December 2013. She explores the role, structure and characteristics of evolving transitional justice policy discourse to provide a better understanding of how, by who, and to what effect the policy label “transitional justice” is progressively filled with meaning. She shows that conflicting interpretations of both the past and the present have been both deeply embedded in and an expression of the dynamic context of domestic political transformation, as old and new elites struggle over the political identity and direction of post-Ben Ali Tunisia.
