Book excerpt: From the National Book Critics Circle Award-winning author comes the gripping true story of a sensational religious forgery and the scandal that shook Harvard. In 2012, Dr. Karen King, a star religion professor at Harvard, announced a breathtaking discovery just steps from the Vatican: she’d found an ancient scrap of papyrus in which Jesus calls Mary Magdalene “my wife.” The mysterious manuscript, which King provocatively titled “The Gospel of Jesus’s Wife,” had the power to topple the Roman Catholic Church. It threatened not just the all-male priesthood, but centuries of sacred teachings on marriage, sex, and women’s leadership, much of it premised on the hallowed tradition of a celibate Jesus. Award-winning journalist Ariel Sabar covered King’s announcement in Rome but left with a question that no one seemed able to answer: Where in the world did this history-making papyrus come from? Sabar’s dogged sleuthing led from the halls of Harvard Divinity School to the former headquarters of the East German Stasi before landing on the trail of a Florida man with an unbelievable past. Could a motorcycle-riding pornographer with a fake Egyptology degree and a prophetess wife have set in motion one of the greatest hoaxes of the century? A propulsive tale laced with twists and trapdoors, Veritas is an exhilarating, globe-straddling detective story about an Ivy League historian and a college dropout—and how they worked together to pass off an audacious forgery as a long-lost piece of the Bible.

Book excerpt: A restatement of the correspondence theory of truth together with a defense against objections and alternative theories, including deflationism, minimalism, and pluralism. In Veritas, Gerald Vision defends the correspondence theory of truth—the theory that truth has a direct relationship to reality—against recent attacks, and critically examines its most influential alternatives. The correspondence theory, if successful, explains one way in which we are cognitively connected to the world; thus, it is claimed, truth—while relevant to semantics, epistemology, and other studies—also has significant metaphysical consequences. Although the correspondence theory is widely held today, Vision points to an emerging orthodoxy in philosophy that claims that truth as such carries no significant weight in philosophical explanations. He devotes much of the book to a criticism of that outlook and to a less vulnerable formulation of the correspondence theory. Vision defends the correspondence theory by both presenting evidence for correspondence and examining the claims made by such alternative theories as deflationism, minimalism, and pluralism. The techniques of the argument are thoroughly analytic, but the problem confronted is broadly humanistic. The question examined—how we, as thinking beings, are connected to and manage to cope in a world that was not designed for our comfort or convenience—is more likely to be raised by continentalists, but is approached here with the tools of clarity and precision more highly prized in analytic philosophy. The book seeks to avoid both the obscurantism that infects much continental thought and the overly technical concerns and methodology that limit the interest of much work in analytic philosophy. It thus provides a rigorous but largely nontechnical treatment of the topic that will be of interest not only to readers familiar with philosophy but also to those with a background in literary theory and linguistics.

Book excerpt: A stained legal career spent defending mob enforcers, two-bit hoods, and other dregs of humanity has left Philadelphia lawyer Victor Carl jaded and resentful -- until a new client appears to offer him an escape and a big payday. Caroline Shaw, the desperate scion of a prominent Main Line dynasty, wants him to prove that her sister Jacqueline's recent suicide was, in fact, murder before Caroline suffers a similar fate. It is a case that propels Carl out of his courtroom element and into a murky world of fabulous wealth, bloody family legacies, and dark secrets. Victor Carl would love nothing more than to collect his substantial fee and get out alive. But a bitter truth is dragging him in dangerously over his head, and ever closer to the shattering revelation that the most terrifying darkness of all lies not in the heart of a Central American jungle...but in the twisted soul of man.

Book excerpt: A stunning monograph, depicting the real, unstaged, natural beauty of California's wine industry by a photographer and wine industry insider Behind the polish and the glamour of the tasting room is an industry notable for its complex labor challenges and its constant duel against unforgiving natural conditions. Longtime Napa-based photographer Jimmy Hayes, who has been documenting the California wine industry since 2014, offers an intimate look at the demanding reality and rugged beauty of winemaking. Hayes's structural, minimal, and poignant photographs present unromanticized, unscripted beauty and quietly magnificent details from an insider's vantage point. To work with wine is to work hard, with one's whole body, mind, and heart--and it's in those messy moments where the real beauty lies.

Book excerpt: In 1974, as a newly ordained priest, Fr Peter McVerry SJ chose to live and work in the Inner City with a small group of other Jesuits. He began working with young people who had dropped out of school, were involved in crime, living in dysfunctional families and on a straight road to prison. To a young priest from a middle class background, the experience was a complete culture shock. It challenged his attitudes, revealed to himself his prejudices, opened his eyes to what is happening in our very divided society and called into question his understanding of God. A ministry intended to last a few years became a life-long commitment. This book contains his reflections on these experiences. He reflects critically on the structures and systems in our society which push people to the margins and ensure that they remain there. Issues affecting prisoners, school drop-outs, drug users and homeless people are discussed in a way that challenges and provokes. He also questions the structures which affect the lives of those on the margins and makes specific suggestions for change.

Book excerpt: 4 July 2132. The colony ship, SS Artemis, leaves our solar system and begins a journey across the galaxy. The leviathan's destination is the "Veritas" Moon, a sphere thought capable of supporting human life. The "First Wave" colonists seek to create a utopian society on the virgin moon, free from the many problems of old Earth, but no one could have predicted the threat which awaited them. Decades later, a small group of settlers flee from the ravages of civil war and the repressive arm of a totalitarian state. This tiny community must attempt to put old grievances behind them as they struggle to survive the harsh realities of life on an isolated outpost, right on the edge of the fledgling human colony. When their settlement comes under attack by a resurgent indigenous enemy it appears the colonists' only hope rests in the actions of a mysterious stranger whose own motives remain unclear.
