Book excerpt: A nonclassical, energy release rate-based approach to predict delamination growth is described that overcomes the limitations of current, state-of-the art methodologies. First, two- and three-dimensional crack-tip elements are-introduced. When a classical, singular field-based mode decomposition procedure is used, the crack-tip elements are shown to predict the same values of energy release rate and mode mixity as two- and three-dimensional continuum finite element analyses for a wide variety of geometries, materials, lay-ups and loadings, including stiffened-skin construction typical to that used in aircraft construction. However, the crack tip element (CTE) analyses are considerably simpler and require orders of magnitude less development and execution time. Next, it is demonstrated that the CTE analyses may also be used to decompose the total energy release rate into nonclassical mode I, II, and III components. This nonsingular field (NSF) decomposition may be used, along with toughness versus mode mix data obtained from unidirectional laminates with midplane delaminations, to predict delamination growth with considerably better accuracy than the classical, state-of-the-art approach. This is due to the fact that the near-tip damage zone is sufficiently large in polymeric matrix composites to invalidate the classical assumptions, whereas the NSF mode decomposition is constructed in a manner that is insensitive to the details of this local damage state. This is demonstrated by applying both the classical and CTE/NSF approaches to make delamination growth predictions in four different graphite-reinforced composites, with matrices that include an epoxy, a toughened epoxy, a thermoplastic interlayer toughened epoxy, and a thermoplastic. For this portion of the study, only flat plate geometries were considered.

Book excerpt: A stochastic model is used to predict the growth of delamination in graphite/epoxy laminates subjected to cyclic loading. The advantage of this model is that both the mean and variance associated with the growth of delamination is predicted. Understanding and predicting the variability associated with the delamination growth process is essential to the estimation of the reliability of composite structures. The empirical nature of the model has been minimized through the introduction of fracture mechanics parameters into the stochastic model. This has been accomplished by assuming that the mean of the stochastic model is represented by a fracture mechanics power law based on strain energy release rate. The applicability of the model is demonstrated through an experimental program that utilizes three laminate geometries. The results of the experimental evaluation illustrate the ability of the model to predict both the mean and variance of the delamination growth process in composite laminates subjected to cyclic loading.

Book excerpt: The growth of triangular-shaped delaminations bordered by matrix cracks, defined herein as "compound delaminations", occurring at the free edges of [±15n]s and [±15n0n]s laminates in static tensile loading was investigated. This triangular compound delamination is the first macroscopic damage observed. Failure of the laminates occurs by unstable growth of these delaminations. The experimental study involved the manufacture of specimens with Teflon implants to create an initial delamination configuration with the delamination oriented at 90° to the matrix crack. The delamination front was monitored using strain gages and X-ray radiographs. Growth was observed to occur at the delamination front near the free edge region with no growth at the matrix crack front resulting in the same configuration as observed in originally unflawed specimens. A three-dimensional displacement-based finite element model of the delaminated region was created and the equivalent domain integral was used to determine the energy release rate at the delamination and matrix crack fronts. The energy release rate was predicted to be highest at the intersection of the delamination and the free edge and was lowest at the intersection of the delamination and the matrix crack. The peak energy release rate predicted at the matrix crack front was smaller than that at the delamination front. Growth was simulated in the model by tilting the delamination front about the matrix crack front. The maximum energy release rate along the delamination dropped and became more uniform as the delamination was tilted. These results indicate that the stable delamination configuration observed is formed by the growth of the delamination front at the free edge region in regions of high energy release rate in preference to the growth of the matrix crack resulting in a curved delamination contour. The overall decrease in energy release rate associated with this delamination growth indicates that the resulting curved delamination is a more stable configuration. The failure process in these specimens involves the formation of these stable delaminations, followed by secondary cracking in the plies adjacent to the delamination, and lastly final failure via unstable growth of the entire triangular region to the ends of the specimen.

The methodology is aimed at overcoming computational difficulties in the determination of energy release rate and mode mix. It also addresses the issue that many laminated composites exhibit large-scale crack tip damage zones and, as such, a singular field-based mode mix decomposition may not accurately account for the dependence of toughness on the loading. In the methodology, the toughness versus mode mix relation, and the definition of mode mix itself, is first determined experimentally. The definition of mode mix is found from the results of a series of delamination toughness tests and is obtained within the construct of a crack tip element analysis. Next, the structure of interest is analyzed using the crack tip element analysis and the experimentally determined definition of mode mix, and delamination growth assessments are performed. This approach also obviates the need for locally detailed two- and three-dimensional finite element analyses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given such advantages as low weight compared to strength and toughness, laminated composites are now used in a wide range of applications. Their increasing use has underlined the need to understand their principal mode of failure, delamination. This important book reviews key research in understanding and preventing delamination. The first part of the book reviews general issues such as the role of fracture mechanics in understanding delamination, design issues and ways of testing delamination resistance. Part two describes techniques for detecting and characterising delamination such as piezoelectric sensors, the use of lamb waves and acoustic emission techniques. The next two sections of the book discuss ways of studying and modelling delamination behaviour. The final part of the book reviews research on delamination behaviour in particular conditions such as shell and sandwich structures, z-pin bridging and resin bonding. With its distinguished editor and international team of contributors, Delamination behaviour of composites is a standard reference for all those researching laminated composites and using them in such diverse applications as microelectronics, aerospace, marine, automotive and civil engineering. It considers first the behaviour of unidirectional laminates, followed by unnotched and notched multidirectional structures. It then considers existing theoretical models. An additional indexed section containing several hundred abstracts from the Rapra Polymer Library database provides useful references for further reading.
