Book excerpt: Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy for Traumatic Brain Injury: A Guide for Speech-Language Pathologists is designed for speech-language pathologists (SLPs) treating adults with cognitive-communicative impairments following traumatic brain injury (TBI). Cognitive impairments are one of the cardinal features of TBI, affecting communication and activities of daily living. This book integrates scientific information into a user friendly and practical application tool for practicing SLPs and students in training to become SLPs. Section I contains chapters that serve as background for understanding the treatment of TBI. Included are chapters addressing mechanisms of injury, neuropathology, recovery patterns, and applicable classification and outcome measures following TBI. An overview of cognitive-communicative impairments is also included, as are sections devoted to common compounding and concomitant conditions that impact individuals with TBI and their rehabilitation. Section I also contains chapters describing the rehabilitation process following TBI from the broader landscape of interdisciplinary and patient-centered rehabilitation and specific to cognitive rehabilitation treatment (CRT) for adults with TBI. Section II contains chapters devoted to describing CRT in the areas of attention and information processing speed impairments, memory, executive function and awareness, and social communication. Chapters in section II focus on treatment approaches that have an established base, described in a clinically useable format. Each chapter includes a summary of the research evidence, recommended candidates, and background on a specific treatment approach. They also include a section devoted to 'Treatment in Action,' designed to explain applicable steps, procedures, and needed materials for implementation of a specific approach. Charts, figures, tables, and appendices are also included to facilitate the use of a specific approach. Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy for Traumatic Brain Injury can serve as a supplemental textbook for graduate courses on neurologic communication disorders. It is also a valuable resource for students during clinical practicum with adults with TBI. This book is also a professional resource that summarizes information in a way that is applicable to practicing SLPs who work with adults with TBI and their families.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1977, the current editors contributed a review article on behavioral group therapy to a volume of Hersen, Miller, and Eisler's Progress in Behavior Modi fication series (1977). At that time we noted that, despite the advantages to both clinicians and clients of conducting behavioral treatments in groups, clinical developments and research in this area were still at a relatively rudimen tary level. The majority of studies in the behavioral group therapy literature we reviewed reported the direct transfer of an individual behavior therapy pro cedure, such as systematic desensitization, to a group of clients with homoge neous problems, such as snake phobia or test anxiety. Groups were used in many studies merely to generate sufficient numbers of subjects to allow various types of interventions to be compared, rather than to examine group process variables per se. Only a limited amount of attention had been given to whether these group interaction variables (such as group discussion, sharing ideas and feelings, and mutual feedback and reinforcement) might enhance individually oriented procedures applied in a group. The 8 years since this original chapter was written have seen a significant growth in both the breadth and depth of clinical research and work in the behavioral group therapy field. This growth was documented in part in a three volume series on behavioral group therapy by the current editors (Upper & Ross, 1979, 1980, 1981).

Book excerpt: Progress in Behavior Modification, Volume 5, is a multidisciplinary serial publication that encompasses the contributions of psychology, psychiatry, social work, speech therapy, education, and rehabilitation. This serial aims to meet the need for a review publication that undertakes to present yearly in-depth evaluations that include a scholarly examination of theoretical underpinnings, a careful survey of research findings, and a comparative analysis of existing techniques and methodologies. The discussions center on a wide spectrum of child and adult disorders. The book opens with a chapter on the assessment and treatment of minimal dating behavior in college students. This is followed by separate chapters on methods of behavioral control of excessive drinking; behavioral analysis and treatment of child noncompliance to parental requests; and behavioral group therapy. Subsequent chapters deal with the conceptual underpinnings of research in children's self-management and treatment strategies; the assessment and therapeutic functions of self-monitoring; and behavioral treatment in homosexuality.

Book excerpt: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) can seriously disrupt the social and communication skills that are basic requirements for everyday life. It is the loss of these interpersonal skills that can be the most devastating for people with TBI and their families. Although there are many books that focus upon TBI, none focus on communication and communication skills specifically. This book fills this important gap in the literature and provides information ranging from a broad overview of the nature of pathology following TBI and its effects on cognition and behaviour, through to the latest evidence about ways to assess and treat social and communication disorders. Much has changed in the field of communication disorders and TBI since the first edition of this book was published in 1999. There have been advances in neuroimaging, providing more accurate understanding of how the brain is damaged in TBI and also insights into its repair. There has been a burgeoning interest in social cognition, and advances in how communication is conceptualized, with a particular focus on the role of how context facilitates or impedes communicative ability. Most importantly, much has changed in the arena of rehabilitation. There is now a growing evidence base of treatments aimed at improving communication problems following TBI, new resources for accessing this information and renewed interest in different kinds of methods for demonstrating treatment effects. Bringing together a range of expert international researchers interested in understanding the nature and treatment of TBI this book covers topics from understanding how the brain damage occurs, how it affects social and communication skills and how these problems might be treated. As such it will be of great interest to clinicians, postgraduate and undergraduate students and researchers in neuropsychology, speech and language pathology.
