Book Synopsis Perspectives in Jurisprudence by : Eric J. Boos
Download or read book Perspectives in Jurisprudence written by Eric J. Boos and published by American University Studies. This book was released on 1998 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: H. L. A. Hart's book, The Concept of Law, is perhaps the single greatest contribution to the field of legal philosophy in this century. Hart lays the groundwork for the continued progress in the perennial debate between legal positivism and natural law. This book briefly reviews the historic significance of that debate and demonstrates how Hart paves the way for an enlightened analysis of the tenuous relationship between law and morality. It provides a detailed examination of Hart's efforts to establish a legal framework through primary and secondary rules and an ultimate rule of recognition. It focuses specifically on Hart's reliance on the «internal perspective» as a means of establishing the form of obligation necessary for a legal system. It examines Hart's treatment of the relationship between law and morality and Hart's mischaracterization of St. Thomas Aquinas's natural law theory.

Book excerpt: Nearly nine centuries after their first appearance, caring for pilgrims in hospices and protecting them from attack on the road, Military Orders continue to play a variety of social and charitable roles today. This collection of thirty-three papers from the second international conference on the Military Orders, contributed by scholars from Europe, the Middle East and the United States, reflects a variety of concerns, but the focus is very much on the beginnings of the Military Orders and their heyday at the time of the Crusades. The subject matter reflects the Military Ordersa (TM) wide-ranging activities, dealing with topics such as medieval hospital care, crusading in the Middle East, warfare in Lithuania, piracy in the Mediterranean, castles in Bohemia, the Reformation in Switzerland and 17th-century European diplomacy. This volume complements the Proceedings of the very successful first conference, The Military Orders: Fighting for the Faith and Caring for the Sick, edited by Malcolm Barber (1994) and now out of print.

Book Synopsis The Influence of Averroes on European Thought by : Koert Debeuf
Download or read book The Influence of Averroes on European Thought written by Koert Debeuf and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-11-14 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By exploring the influence of the Andalusian philosopher, Averroes or Ibn Rushd (1126-1198 AD) on European philosophy from the 13th to the 18th century, Koert Debeuf sheds light on a neglected side of the history of philosophy: the influence of Arabic thought on European philosophy. In this book Debeuf reveals the true extent of Averroes's role, showing it as much larger than we read about in popular histories of philosophy. His ideas have been followed, fought and discussed in Europe for centuries, deeply influencing generations of thinkers. Why has Averroes' role been forgotten? By focusing on histories of philosophy written from the 17th to the 21st century, Debeuf provides a chronological overview that shows that Arabic philosophy was not just forgotten, but purposefully written out of the history of philosophy. Until the early Enlightenment most European thinkers were convinced that the history of philosophy was universalistic. That changed in the 18th century with the rise and dominance of Christian and European idea. Although the battle against Arabic philosophy started more than 700 years ago we see how it is still alive today. This much-needed study encourages us to challenge and reassess our existing ideas about the history of philosophy and Eurocentric interpretations of one of philosophy's major figures.
Book Synopsis Action and Character According to Aristotle by : Kevin L. Flannery
Download or read book Action and Character According to Aristotle written by Kevin L. Flannery and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2013-09-24 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aristotle, according to the author, depicts the way in which human acts of various sorts and in various combinations determine the logical structure of moral character. Some moral characters--or character types--manage to incorporate a high degree of practical consistency; others incorporate less, without forfeiting their basic orientation toward the good. Still others approach utter inconsistency or moral deprivation, although even these, insofar as they are responsible for their actions, retain a core element of rationality in their souls. According to Aristotle, moral character depends ultimately on the structure of individual acts and on how they fit together into a whole that is consistent--or not consistent--with justice and friendship.--From publisher's description.
