The man they called The Frogman of Cedar Creek and a few years later a crazed funeral director from Kemp was responsible for the disappearance and murder of young women as they visited festivals. The mortician Thaddeus Van Cleave was found not guilty and vanished himself the next day. Never to be seen again. Now there is a new serial killer on the scene, mimicking the murder patterns of both The Frogman and Van Cleave. Local police and the Texas Rangers are baffled. Who will be the next victim of the copycat killer? Is the murderer looking for vengeance for the deaths of the other serial killers? Will this killer walk free too? This book wraps up the series. It's another page turner and a must read.

Book excerpt: In 1896, the isolated and vast state of Idaho is a haven for the polygamous splinter group called The Kingdom of Glory, which is hiding more than their outlawed practice of plural marriage. At the compound called Cedar Creek, the prophet is hoping to increase his congregation, even if that means marrying off girls to men decades older. When Peri, who escaped the compound years earlier, returns to help rescue Grace, a girl betrothed to the prophet himself, she ends up also saving her own sister Emma. As the three women make a frantic and deadly escape from the compound, they take with them both the newborn heir to the church, and their dead mother's cryptic journal to the prophet's hidden treasure. Along their journey, the women realize to truly be free they must face what holds them captive, even if those answers are more horrifying than they ever imagined.

Winter has arrived with a vengeance! The trappers have left the mountain to get paid for their skins so they can get supplies to see them through next year’s trapping, but Sarah hates Cedar Creek. The day she and her son Thomas ride in, she clashes with new sheriff Christian Morgan, a man with a past he is trying hard to keep buried, and they become embroiled in a stormy relationship. Setting up camp on the riverbank below town just like she has done every winter for the past twelve years suits Sarah just fine. But Christian wants to make love to Sarah in a warm bed rather than outside in the cold, after all, he has the bottom floor of Mountain View Lodge all to himself. Christian however, doesn’t know Sarah once owned the lodge - because no-one will tell him anything about her. Convinced Benjamin Crawley murdered her father so he could take ownership of the lodge, Sarah is adamant she will never step foot inside that house - ever again. For the trappers who have promised to look out for Sarah, trouble is always close by. How can simple vermin like river rats, get Sarah in trouble with the law?

Book excerpt: Nestled between the Allegheny and Blue Ridge Mountains, Virginia's Shenandoah Valley enjoyed tremendous prosperity before the Civil War. This valuable stretch of land - called "the Breadbasket of the Confederacy" due to its rich soil and ample harvests - became the source of many conflicts between the Confederate and Union armies. Of the thirteen major battles fought here, none was more influential than the Battle of Cedar Creek. On October 19, 1864, General Philip Sheridan's Union troops finally gained control of the valley, which eliminated the Shenandoah as a supply source for Confederate forces in Virginia, ended the valley's role as a diversionary theater of war and stopped its use as an avenue of invasion into the North

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May 1861, Virginian Thomas Henry Carter (1831–1908) raised an artillery battery and joined the Confederate army. Over the next four years, he rose steadily in rank from captain to colonel, placing him among the senior artillerists in Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. During the war, Carter wrote more than 100 revealing letters to his wife, Susan, about his service. His interactions with prominent officers--including Lee, Jubal A. Early, John B. Gordon, Robert E. Rodes, and others--come to life in Carter's astute comments about their conduct and personalities. Combining insightful observations on military operations, particularly of the Battles of Antietam and Spotsylvania Court House and the 1864 Shenandoah Valley Campaign, with revealing notes on the home front and the debate over the impressment and arming of slaves, Carter's letters are particularly interesting because his writing is not overly burdened by the rhetoric of the southern ruling class. Here, Graham Dozier offers the definitive edition of Carter's letters, meticulously transcribed and carefully annotated. This impressive collection provides a wealth of Carter's unvarnished opinions of the people and events that shaped his wartime experience, shedding new light on Lee's army and Confederate life in Virginia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history of independent African American settlements in Texas during the Jim Crow era, featuring historical and contemporary photographs. In the decades following the Civil War, nearly a quarter of African Americans achieved a remarkable victory—they got their own land. While other ex-slaves and many poor whites became trapped in the exploitative sharecropping system, these independence-seeking individuals settled on pockets of unclaimed land that had been deemed too poor for farming and turned them into successful family farms. In these self-sufficient rural communities, often known as “freedom colonies,” African Americans created a refuge from the discrimination and violence that routinely limited the opportunities of blacks in the Jim Crow South. Freedom Colonies is the first book to tell the story of these independent African American settlements. Thad Sitton and James Conrad focus on communities in Texas, where blacks achieved a higher percentage of land ownership than in any other state of the Deep South. The authors draw on a vast reservoir of ex-slave narratives, oral histories, written memoirs, and public records to describe how the freedom colonies formed and to recreate the lifeways of African Americans who made their living by farming or in skilled trades such as milling and blacksmithing. They also uncover the forces that led to the decline of the communities from the 1930s onward, including economic hard times and the greed of whites who found legal and illegal means of taking black-owned land. And they visit some of the remaining communities to discover how their independent way of life endures into the twenty-first century. “Thad Sitton and James H. Conrad have made an important contribution to African American and southern history with their study of communities fashioned by freedmen in the years after emancipation.” —Journal of American History “This study is a thoughtful and important addition to an understanding of rural Texas and the nature of black settlements.” —Journal of Southern History
