Book excerpt: The 5th volume of Poetry clearly expresses the interest Marshall takes in publishing poems. Often the cross-over from Prose into Poetry is quite obvious (Prosetry). The first volume: Whispers in a Thunderstorm pulled together a collection of poems that were written over a 5 decade period. The 2nd Volume Chiaroscuro emphasised a rejuvenation of poetic skills and concepts. The 3rd volume: Continents on Fire focused on the unrelenting social and political global scene. The 4th volume: Tequila & Temptation played on themes of adulthood, parenthood and finally this 5th volume: Velvet Voice & Vice deals with the theme of relationships, love and laughter and new friendships. The different stages of growth are apparent in these five published volumes. Enlist as a fan and enjoy this journey into poetry landscape with all its beauty and splendour, bask in the sunshine of these exquisite verses and use hundreds of ideas and concepts in your work.

Whiting savors proverbial expressions and has devoted much of his lifetime to studying and collecting them; no one knows more about British and American proverbs than he. The present volume, based upon writings in British North America from the earliest settlements to approximately 1820, complements his and Archer Taylor's Dictionary of American Proverbs and Proverbial Phrases, 1820-1880. It differs from that work and from other standard collections, however, in that its sources are primarily not "literary" but instead workaday writings - letters, diaries, histories, travel books, political pamphlets, and the like. The authors represent a wide cross-section of the populace, from scholars and statesmen to farmers, shopkeepers, sailors, and hunters. Mr. Whiting has combed all the obvious sources and hundreds of out-of-the-way publications of local journals and historical societies. This body of material, "because it covers territory that has not been extracted and compiled in a scholarly way before, can justly be said to be the most valuable of all those that Whiting has brought together," according to Albert B. Friedman. "What makes the work important is Whiting's authority: a proverb or proverbial phrase is what BJW thinks is a proverb or proverbial phrase. There is no objective operative definition of any value, no divining rod; his tact, 'feel, ' experience, determine what's the real thing and what is spurious."

It is crammed with glorious details about plane crashes, under-ice submarine maneuvers, flying hovercraft, and helicopters. If you enjoy an Ian Flemming book about the exploits of James Bond with his license to kill, you will be thrilled by the skills and abilities of Major Shawn Phillips of the RCAF. He is a proficient pilot and a Search and Rescue Specialist. He shoots to kill when in the line-of-duty. Whether it is saving a Russian chopper or using a rocket launcher to attack enemies, you can count on the Major. Mari Leech is a beautiful love interest of the airman and also a skillful RCAF pilot. If you are motivated by a captivating plot involving unbounded greed, uncontrolled selfishness, espionage and political intrigue, you will be galvanized by the well-defined characters in this book. There are two Naval Admirals. Both want power. One would stage an election while the other overthrows a government in order to steal land and resources. Major Phillips retaliates, with forces consisting of friends and foes, to over-turn the actions of the Admirals. Talk about evil foes! You will not be disappointed in the cruelty and scheming ways of both Admirals. Each of them are pure evil and will do anything to achieve their private goals. Their bags of tricks include a military coup, sabotage, blackmail and cut-throat operations. It is up to Major Phillips to defeat them and their followers. There is a likable Russian Colonel, with his commandos, in the arctic to retrieve precious equipment and loads of strategic data. The Colonel is an aggressive goal-oriented leader, and it takes all of Phillips’ rational skills to control him. A naive Naval submarine commander gets duped into acts against other countries’ authorities and needs to find revenge. If you enjoy reading unique tales, you will be enticed to follow the twists and turns of this story as it demonstrates how small mistakes can turn out to be major disasters.

Book excerpt: Discover a spiritual practice that helps you maintain spiritual, emotional, physical, and mental health. "We toiled on computers seven days per week, rising as early as 4:00 a.m. to squeeze in spiritual quiet time before we both retreated to our respective laptops, typing the days (and weekends) away. Though I grew up keeping Sundays sacred, six years into our marriage, we'd fallen into the trap of using the Lord's Day to catch up. … At its worst, our church attendance was less than 50 percent. … I began, for the first time in my life, to understand why people don't attend church services." —J. Dana Trent, chapter 1 In our culture of constant busyness, most of us feel like we're never caught up. The lines between home and work have blurred as we stay tethered to our mobile devices and computers. Many people use weekends to catch up on errands and other work that doesn't get done during the week. God's commandment to "Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy" seems like a relic from a simpler time. Many Americans balk at the idea of setting aside a whole day for worship, rest, and time with those who matter most to them. Yet we long for more time to spend on what matters most—unrushed time to rest, reconnect with friends and loved ones, and deepen our relationship with God. An ancient spiritual practice exists that can help restore balance to our lives: the practice of keeping sabbath. But how exactly do we manage to build time for sabbath into our busy lives? Dana Trent explores this question in For Sabbath's Sake. With humor and honesty, Trent reveals her own struggles with setting apart a day devoted to God, rest, and community. This book traces the rich history of sabbath, helps you find ways to overcome barriers to this spiritual practice, and suggests achievable ways to build sabbath into your life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polish estrada music dominated Polish popular music throughout the state socialist period but gained little attention from popular music scholars because it was regarded as being of low quality and politically conformist. Ewa Mazierska carefully examines these assumptions, considering those institutions which catered for the needs of estrada artists and their fans, the presence of estrada in different media and the careers and styles of the leading stars, such as Mieczysław Fogg, Irena Santor, Violetta Villas, Anna German, Jerzy Połomski, Maryla Rodowicz, Zdzisława Sośnicka, Zbigniew Wodecki and Krzysztof Krawczyk. Mazierska also discusses the memory and legacy of estrada music in the post-communist period. The book draws on Poland’s cultural and political history and the history of Polish popular music and media, including television and radio. Mazierska engages with concepts such as genre, stardom and authenticity in order to capture the essence of Polish estrada music and to provide a comparison with popular music produced in other countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2023 Publication Award Honorable Mention, British Association for Film, Television and Screen Studies An examination of the sound and silence of women in digital media. In today’s digital era, women’s voices are heard everywhere—from smart home devices to social media platforms, virtual reality, podcasts, and even memes—but these new forms of communication are often accompanied by dated gender politics. In Women’s Voices in Digital Media, Jennifer O’Meara dives into new and well-established media formats to show how contemporary screen media and cultural practices police and fetishize women’s voices, but also provide exciting new ways to amplify and empower them. As she travels through the digital world, O’Meara discovers newly acknowledged—or newly erased—female voice actors from classic films on YouTube, meets the AI and digital avatars in Her and The Congress, and hears women’s voices being disembodied in new ways via podcasts and VR voice-overs. She engages with dialogue that is spreading with only the memory of a voice, looking at how popular media like Clueless and The Simpsons have been mined for feminist memes, and encounters vocal ventriloquism on RuPaul’s Drag Race that queers and valorizes the female voice. Through these detailed case studies, O’Meara argues that the digital proliferation of screens alters the reception of sounds as much as that of images, with substantial implications for women’s voices.

Book excerpt: Meet Gillian Key. She’s a paramortal psychologist, who can treat the mental distress of nonhumans. And she’s a Marine Special Forces operative, who can get physical with them when the situation calls for it. Gillian’s two worlds collide when she travels to the Carpathian Mountains in Romania to counsel the local master vampire, Count Aleksei Rachlav. His therapy serves as the perfect cover for her special ops mission: to infiltrate local vampire factions who may be allied with Rachlav’s enemy—the legendary Dracula. As a brewing turf war between those who favor peaceful co-existence with humans and those who see them as food begins to rock the paranormal realm, Gillian finds herself caught in the middle, and at the mercy of her dangerously attractive host. Her professional ethics tell her to keep her distance—but besides being both a healer and a fighter, Gillian Key is also very much a woman.
