Book excerpt: A work on turbulent premixed combustion is important because of increased concern about the environmental impact of combustion and the search for new combustion concepts and technologies. An improved understanding of lean fuel turbulent premixed flames must play a central role in the fundamental science of these new concepts. Lean premixed flames have the potential to offer ultra-low emission levels, but they are notoriously susceptible to combustion oscillations. Thus, sophisticated control measures are inevitably required. The editors' intent is to set out the modeling aspects in the field of turbulent premixed combustion. Good progress has been made on this topic, and this cohesive volume contains contributions from international experts on various subtopics of the lean premixed flame problem.

Book excerpt: This volume contains invited lectures and contributed papers presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Mathematical Modeling in Combustion and related topics, held in. Lyon (France), April 27 - 30, 1987. This conference was planned to fit in with the two-month visit of Professor G.S.S. Ludford to the Ecole Centrale de Lyon. He kindly agreed to chair the Scientific and Organizing Committee and actively helped to initiate the meeting. His death in December 1986 is an enormous loss to the scientific community in general, and in particular, to the people involved in the present enterprise. The subject of mathematical modeling in combustion is too large for a single conference, and the selection of topics re flects both areas of recent research activity and areas of in terest to Professor G.S.S. Ludford, to whose memory the Advanced Workshop and this present volume are dedicated. The meeting was divided into seven specialized sessions detonation theory, mathematical analysis, numerical treatment of combustion problems, flame theory, experimental and industrial aspects, complex chemistry, and turbulent combustion. It brought together researchers and engineers from University and Industry (see below the closing remarks of the workshop by Prof. N. Peters). The articles in this volume have been judged and accepted on their scientific quality, and language corrections may have been sacrificed in order to allow quick dissemination of knowledge to prevail.

This technique is capable of simultaneously monitoring OH time series at two locations, hence allowing the characterization of spatial structures in turbulent flames in addition to their temporal behavior. Several refinements have been made to improve upon the previous one-point instrument. Using a specially designed collection-lens system, off-axis optical aberrations have been effectively minimized in the probe volume. Furthermore, additional electronics has been installed which permit absolute species concentration measurements. As a preliminary study, two-point OH time-series measurements were taken in three standard turbulent non-premixed flames (H3, DLR_A and DLR_B). Two-point statistics, including space-time correlations, spatial autocorrelation functions and integral length scales were computed to help elucidate the flame structure and turbulence-chemistry interactions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The combustion of fossil fuels remains a key technology for the foreseeable future. It is therefore important that we understand the mechanisms of combustion and, in particular, the role of turbulence within this process. Combustion always takes place within a turbulent flow field for two reasons: turbulence increases the mixing process and enhances combustion, but at the same time combustion releases heat which generates flow instability through buoyancy, thus enhancing the transition to turbulence. The four chapters of this book present a thorough introduction to the field of turbulent combustion. After an overview of modeling approaches, the three remaining chapters consider the three distinct cases of premixed, non-premixed, and partially premixed combustion, respectively. This book will be of value to researchers and students of engineering and applied mathematics by demonstrating the current theories of turbulent combustion within a unified presentation of the field.

Book excerpt: Measurements were made of the axial fluctuating-velocity component of the turbulent stream issuing from the burner port. The intensity of turbulence appeared to be dependent upon the nature of the diluent. Consideration of the data in terms of the measured turbulence parameters was a small over-all improvement. However, this change was in the direction of better correlation.

Book excerpt: One goal of this work was to quantify several properties of turbulent premixed flames that have not been quantified before and are especially useful for the assessment of direct numerical simulations (DNS) and models. It was decided to select a flame that is in the corrugated flamelet regime and use simultaneous CH planar laser-induced fluorescence/ particle image velocimetry (CH PLIF/PIV) diagnostics, which previously had been applied only to nonpremixed combustion. These diagnostics allow one to identify the thin wrinkled reaction zone (where CH exists) and the nearby velocity field. Properties that were measured include local stretch rates, a wrinkling parameter, the degree of flamelet extinction, reaction layer thicknesses, flame surface density (), and global consumption speed, which is one type of turbulent burning velocity that is described below.

Book excerpt: With regard to both the environmental sustainability and operating efficiency demands, modern combustion research has to face two main objectives, the optimization of combustion efficiency and the reduction of pollutants. This book reports on the combustion research activities carried out within the Collaborative Research Center (SFB) 568 “Flow and Combustion in Future Gas Turbine Combustion Chambers” funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). This aimed at designing a completely integrated modeling and numerical simulation of the occurring very complex, coupled and interacting physico-chemical processes, such as turbulent heat and mass transport, single or multi-phase flows phenomena, chemical reactions/combustion and radiation, able to support the development of advanced gas turbine chamber concepts

Book excerpt: Through the influence of turbulence, the front of a premixed turbulent flame is subjected to the motions of eddies that leads to an increase in the flame surface area, and the term flame wrinkling is commonly used to describe it. If it is assumed that the flame front would continue to burn locally unaffected by the stretch, then the total turbulent burning velocity is expected to increase proportionally to the increase in the flame surface area caused by wrinkling. When the turbulence intensity is high enough such that the stretch due to hydrodynamics and flame curvature would influence the local premixed laminar burning velocity, then the actual laminar burning velocity (that is, flamelet consumption velocity) should reflect the influence of stretch. To address this issue, obtaining the knowledge of instantaneous flame front structures, flame brush characteristics, and burning velocities of premixed turbulent flames is necessary. Two axisymmetric Bunsen-type burners were used to produce premixed turbulent flames, and three optical measurement techniques were utilized: Particle image velocimetry to measure the turbulence statistics; Rayleigh scattering method to measure the temperature fields of premixed turbulent flames, and Mie scattering method to visualize the flame front contours of premixed turbulent flames. Three hydrocarbons (methane, ethane, and propane) were used as the fuel in the experiments. The turbulence was generated using different perforated plates mounted upstream of the burner exit. A series of comprehensive parameters including the thermal flame front thickness, characteristic flame height, mean flame brush thickness, mean volume of the turbulent flame region, two-dimensional flame front curvature, local flame front angle, two-dimensional flame surface density, wrinkled flame surface area, turbulent burning velocity, mean flamelet consumption velocity, mean turbulent flame stretch factor, mean turbulent Markstein length and number, and mean fuel consumption rate were systematically evaluated from the experimental data. The normalized preheat zone and reaction zone thicknesses decreased with increasing non-dimensional turbulence intensity in ultra-lean premixed turbulent flames under a constant equivalence ratio of 0.6, whereas they increased with increasing equivalence ratios from 0.6 to 1.0 under a constant bulk flow velocity. The normalized preheat zone and reaction zone thicknesses showed no overall trend with increasing non-dimensional longitudinal integral length scale. The normalized preheat zone and reaction zone thicknesses decreased by increasing the Karlovitz number, suggesting that increasing the total stretch rate is the controlling mechanism in the reduction of flame front thickness for the experimental conditions studied in this thesis. In general, the leading edge and half-burning surface turbulent burning velocities were enhanced with increasing equivalence ratio from lean to stoichiometric mixtures, whereas they decreased with increasing equivalence ratio for rich mixtures. These velocities were enhanced with increasing total turbulence intensity. The leading edge and half-burning surface turbulent burning velocities for lean/stoichiometric mixtures were observed to be smaller than that for rich mixtures. The mean turbulent flame stretch factor displayed a dependence on the equivalence ratio and turbulence intensity. Results show that the mean turbulent flame stretch factors for lean/stoichiometric and rich mixtures were not equal when the unstrained premixed laminar burning velocity, non-dimensional bulk flow velocity, non-dimensional turbulence intensity, and non-dimensional longitudinal integral length scale were kept constant.

Book excerpt: The book begins with an introduction to the general problems of making measurements in high temperature and a presentation of chemically reacting flow systems. It describes each instrument with the various diagnostic techniques and discusses measurements that have been made in furnaces, flames, and rocket engines. The detailed measurement techniques described in this book cover a wide spectrum of applications in combustion systems, including gas turbine, rocket measurement techniques that were developed in laboratories. Information obtained on detailed temperature, velocity, particle size, and gas concentration distribution is leading to improve understanding of the chemical combustion process and to design imporvements in combustors.
