Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation investigates the design and analysis of vehicular and pedestrian models. A type of vehicular model is developed both to offer novel contributions to vehicle behavior modeling as well as to use as a tool to learn how to create an even more complex behavioral model of pedestrian movement. First, the current state of modeling is investigated including purely behavioral studies and engineering modeling techniques. Behavioral studies are drawn largely from the field of urban affairs and planning while engineering modeling methods are drawn from civil engineering, mathematics, and computer science. Second, a model of vehicular traffic is constructed by first implementing existing work in software. Existing work focuses on single lane traffic, so we next extend the model to support lane changing in multiple lanes. The new mathematical rules are implemented in software and effects of lane changing then studied. The model contributes new capabilities to the field and provides experience to next create a more complex pedestrian model. Third, an algorithmic model of pedestrian movement is created. At its simplest level, steering rules are used that are drawn from the literature. New rules and models are created to support groups and simple social interaction. Learning and memory are then modeled so that simulated pedestrians are human-like in ways that have an effect on congestion. Fourth, software is developed that implements the model. While the model offers a means, i.e., function parameters, for calibration, an implementation must exist to take advantage of that. The software is designed using an object-oriented approach in conjunction with agent based modeling. A pedestrian is an object and agent, learns, has memory, follows its schedule, and moves in, affects and is affected by its environment, and explores the environment. Results from the calibrated software show that the model produces reliable results for situations where the modeled behavior is typical. Contributions to transportation engineering include the vehicular and especially the pedestrian model. Proof of concept software implementation shows the utility of the models and how they can be used to ease and improve design of vehicular and pedestrian areas.

Book excerpt: Study examining and evaluating vehicular circulation, vehicular parking and pedestrian circulation in the Transitional Area. It addresses specifically the following basic concerns: the high volumes of through traffic and pedestrian activity resulting in pedestrian/vehicle conflicts; vehicular traffic speed and noise; high levels of on-street parking; aesthetics/compatibility of surface parking lots with surrounding land uses and building forms; a relatively high percentage of the resident population which is vulnerable to an adverse pedestrian environment (i.e., senior citizens). In addition, it examines and analyzes the inter-relationships between traffic characteristics and present and future land uses. Recommends an overall circulation and parking strategy for the Transitional Area.

Book excerpt: The report provides highway and traffic engineers with an understanding of the basic considerations necessary to plan effective pedestrian accommodations at urban freeway interchanges. The individual design components used to facilitate pedestrian movement are evaluated on the basis of their impacts on pedestrians and on vehicle flow. Case studies of existing interchanges illustrate common problems and potential solutions. A general approach to the design and evaluation of pedestrian facilities is suggested.

Book excerpt: Facilities Management Handbook was written from practical experience to con solidate, under one cover, all the necessary information at an adequate depth to guide you effectively through the intricacies of a project that may begin with site search, progress through leasing, new building construction or remodeling, and on to oc cupancy. This is not a theoretical exposition, but instead is a practical approach based on 30 years experience with every aspect of the material covered. These methods and concepts have been successfully used in actual situations. The book's purpose is to bring together, in one handy volume, information usually found in separate, specialized, technical publications, in an easy-to-read style readily comprehensible and usable by both technical and nontechnical people. It was written to serve anyone responsible for building design and construction, facilities manage ment and operations, and real estate leasing; particularly building owners and managers, industrial, commercial, and institutional facilities department personnel, plant engineering, and real estate departments. It could also be valuable to students and others planning careers in these fields. The book provides necessary information to assist sales personnel handling products and services serving the need of the above.
