Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vegetation Types of the San Bernardino Mountains The area includes a diversity of environmental conditions, from alpine barrens to desert flats. Fire also has played a large role in determining the vegetation cover. Broadly speaking, the vegetation occurs in three general belts, or areas containing three distinct classes: brush, desert scrub, and forest. Brush.-a mixture of many brush species, frequently known as Chaparral, occurs in the lower altitudes-roughly below feet mostly on the south or coastal side of the mountains and to a limited extent on the north side. The climate in this belt is characterized by hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. Combined with recurring fires, this kind of climate produces an environment favoring a brush cover. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Vegetation of the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests in Central Colorado: A Habitat Type Classification The temperature and precipitation data from published records are useful in characterizing the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests in broad, general terms. However, in regions with massive mountain ranges, deep valleys and canyons, and high plateaus, precipita tion and temperatures are so variable that it is difficult to provide any meaningful climatic information for a given locality. Although none of the species covered in this booklet are currently protected by Federal law, most have been listed as declining species in documents generated by the states of Alabama and Florida, and all deserve our careful custodianship. A number only occur at a few locations in the forest. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plants of Rocky Mountain National Park The wild flowers of Rocky Mountain National Park are one of its main attractions. They paint its fields, meadows, hillsides, and rocky gorges in all the colors of the rainbow. There has been a con stant demand for an illustrated guide to these flowers, and this publica tion has been prepared in response to that demand. It is the result of several years' study of the plants of the region. Emphasis has been put on the outstanding field characters of the plants described and on their habitats. Keys for identification and an illustrated glossary are included. The chapter on Mountain Plants at Home deals with the relations between the plants and their severe mountain environ ment and their adaptations to that environment. The keys have been made as practical and simple as possible. They have been previously published, tested, and revised, and the writer feels that they will be useful to all persons who are seriously interested in the identification of our common wild flowers, whether or not they have had training in botany. In order to keep the keys from being long and unwieldy, some of the inconspicuous plants are not included. However, the names of all seed plants and ferns known to grow in the park are given in the text. Technical terms have been avoided as much as possible, but because it is impossible to differentiate between related plants by using only every-day English, a few technical terms have been employed to assure accuracy. These are adequately explained by drawings and definitions in the glossary. Approximately 700 species are included. Specimens of most of these have been collected by the writer and are in the herbarium of the Rocky Mountain National Park. Most of the collecting has been done on the eastern side of the Continental Divide, and it is probable that some plants not included herein will be found on the western slope. A thorough study of the grass and sedge families has not been attempted, but lists of those species known to occur have been in cluded. The region that has been intensively studied is that of the Rocky Mountain National Park and the territory surrounding Estes Park, but this book will be found useful above feet throughout the mountains of northern Colorado and southern Wyoming. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Flora of Colorado The author has tried to verify the records referring to Colorado plants given in these publications. Some of these records have been proven erroneous. In some cases the specimens were wrongly determined, in others the stations at which they were collcted are not within the present boundaries of the state of Colorado. Of course, all such species have been excluded from this catalogue. The author has also excluded a few more, which he thought should be included in the same category, although he has not been able to prove them erroneously referred to the flora of Colorado, as for instance Californian, Mexican, or Alleghanian species, accredited to Colorado but not to the intervening states. He has also been forced by circumstances to exclude a score or so species recently described from Colorado, but wholly unknown to the author. Not being able to include them in his keys and being uncertain whether the descriptions really characterize new and valid species or merely represent redescriptions of old ones, he thought it best to leave them out until more information could be had. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forests and Forest Plants is a component of Encyclopedia of Food and Agricultural Sciences, Engineering and Technology Resources in the global Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS), which is an integrated compendium of twenty one Encyclopedias. Forests are an essential part of Earth's life support systems. Forest resources are essential for humankind. They provide both vital goods and services. They provide food, fuel, shelter, soil and water protection, and filter the air we breathe. This publication on Forest and Forest Plants provides the user with such information as to create an awareness of the value of our forestlands and the products and environmental services they provide. The three volumes on Forests and Forest Plants are organized starting with first the necessity of : the World's Forest Resources – including classification and distribution of forest, urban forestry and agroforestry; Important Tree Species including trees in reclamation and arid zone forestry; Forests and Forest Products including wood and non word products; the Role of Forests in the Biosphere – preserving biological diversity, functions in the hydrological cycle, etc.; and Conservation and Breeding of Forest Trees – what is being done to improve our forest resources - silviculture, tree nurseries, and forest protection. The theme Forest and Forest Plants has led to the conclusion that there are substantial difficulties in matching environmental concerns and sustainability with an ever-increasing world population. Thus there is a tension between maximizing for food, wood and production on the one hand and implementing sustainable development and environmental protection on the other. These three volumes are aimed at the following five major target audiences: University and College Students Educators, Professional Practitioners, Research Personnel and Policy Analysts, Managers, and Decision Makers, NGOs and GOs.
