Book Synopsis Communities and Markets in Economic Development by : Masahiko Aoki
Download or read book Communities and Markets in Economic Development written by Masahiko Aoki and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2001-05-31 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the role of community in facilitating the transition to market relationships in economic development, and in controlling and sustaining local public goods such as irrigation, forests, grazing land, and fishing grounds. Previously it was customary to classify economic systems in terms of varying combinations of state and market control of resource allocation. In contrast, this book recognizes community as the third major element of economic systems. This new approach also departs from the conventional view that markets and community norms should be treated as mutually exclusive means of organizing economic activity, instead clarifying the situations in which they may become complementary. Further discussion focuses on the conditions under which management of local commons can, and should, be delegated to local communities rather than subjected to the control of central government. These and other issues are investigated by twenty-one leading scholars from economic history, development economics, agricultural economics, and institutional economics. The resulting volume is the latest in a set of four books about East Asian developmental experiences, co-sponsored by the Economic Institute of the World Bank and the Stanford Institute of Economic Policy Research. It will appeal to economists and other social scientists with an interest in economic development, history, comparative systems, and institutional economics.
Book Synopsis The Asymmetries of Globalization by : Pan Yotopoulos
Download or read book The Asymmetries of Globalization written by Pan Yotopoulos and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-01-24 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discourse on globalization has become polarized. Proponents consider globalization as the silver bullet for targeting growth in the world economy and for poor countries specifically, while opponents see it as the poisoned arrow of exploitation and impoverishment of the Third World. Splendidly edited, The Asymmetries of Globalization deals with the 'what' and 'how' but primarily with 'why' globalization has most often negative outcomes for developing countries. It breaks new ground in approaching globalization not only as trade commodities, but also as trade in positional goods ('decommodified trade.') The two novel and munificent forms of post-Ricardian decommodified trade, trade in services and trade in hard currency in the form of currency substitution, are sculpted in the introductory chapter as the foundation of the systematic asymmetries of globalization. The analytical approach of introducing 'positional goods' in the form of decommodified trade, in the discource on globalization, is original. It is also timely in a situation where the tail of trade in 'services' has grown enough to wag the traditional trade-in-commodities dog of globalization. The balance of the chapters in this volume constitute a tapestry of case studies that elaborate and empirically investigate the causes of systematic asymmetries of globalization. The book's appeal transcends economics to make it also highly useful to students across the disciplines of sociology and political science, especially in the fields of international political economy and the politics of international trade. It will certainly enlighten all those working in the general areas of globalization, poverty and economic development.

Download or read book Proceedings of the International Symposium Southeast Asia Vegetable 2021 (SEAVEG 2021) written by Irham Irham and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-02-10 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an open access book. International Symposium – SEAVEG 2021 as a medium for educators, researchers, practitioners and students to convey the results of research, insights, knowledge, and innovations that have been carried out and compile them into a concrete, implementable formula. SEAVEG 2021 could be a discussion forum that encourages and accelerates agricultural development in Indonesia, especially horticultural commodities. The symposium welcomes papers that explore but not limited to the topic of Vegetables for Resilience and Healthy Diets. The range of the topics covered by SEAVEG 2021 includes: Hunger and MalnutritionStarvation occurs when a person does not get enough food, and in the long run, it can lead to malnutrition. Malnutrition can also occur when a person lacks essential nutrients as a result of not eating sufficiently. The horticultural sub-sector, especially vegetables, is a rich source of nutrients. As a food ingredient that contains many nutrients including vitamins and minerals, proper consumption of vegetables is important. It includes breeding, seed quality, production, and related aspects. Food and Nutrition Security Food as basic human need plays a significant role to create a good life. The availability of safe and nutritious food must be fulfilled. Food deficiency can create instability. >In order to achieve food stability, each country has different concepts and methods depending on their respective conditions, such as economic, geographic, technological, regional dan socio-cultural conditions. It includes breeding, seed quality, production, and related aspects. Food Supply Chain and Agribusiness In developing countries, the food supply chain has not been efficient because of the many actors involved. The supply chain describes the process of food, in this case from horticulture commodities, from production, processing, distribution, consumption, and disposal. Each step of the supply chain requires human resources that will reduce the farmer’s margin. The length of the supply chain also affects people’s purchasing power. Food Supply Chain is one of the many aspects from agribusiness system. To make an environmental that is leaning towards farmer’s prosperity, we need to make an agribusiness system that is efficient. Digital marketing system, such as marketplace, can shorten the supply chain and support better agribusiness system. Young Agripreneur in Horticulture Currently, young people around the world are not much interested in the agricultural sector. Agriculture, especially horticulture sub-sector, is very prospective to increase income and economic value. Farming vegetable commodity from upstream to downstream is very challenging for the millennial generation to develop. The demand in the horticultural sector, especially vegetable products, is increasing during the covid-19 pandemic. It is a business opportunity in itself, especially for young agricultural entrepreneurs. Millennial characteristics, adaptive to technology, full of innovation, make young agricultural entrepreneurs have the potential to increase the income and develop their business in horticultural commodities. Covid-19: Issues and Challenges in Vegetables for Resilience during PandemicThe Covid-19 pandemic is a momentum for the revival of the horticultural sub-sector. A balanced nutritional intake, especially vegetables, is highly recommended. People are increasingly aware that vegetables accompanied by a proper and healthy diet are beneficial for increasing body immunity. People are also encouraged to practice a healthier lifestyle to maintain endurance. Therefore, they will get infected by the disease. This change in mindset has influenced people’s interest in finding healthy food sources, such as vegetables that are good for health.
